It is usually mid April that the flowers are in full bloom, but conditions vary by year and the day you visit. The day we went, it was very windy, so the poppy flowers were closed up to protect themselves. Still beautiful, but not the same as when they are fully opened. We stayed overnight nearby and the next day was full sun, and full open blooms. We saw an amazing patch of poppies on the side of a road near a freeway, pulled over and started our climb up the hill in poppy heaven. I can't describe how incredible it was for me. I love wildflowers. I love California poppies, botanical name is Eschseholzia californica (some horticultural knowledge, there for you). I know that you aren't suppose to walk among the poppy field, but I just couldn't resist. I took out my camera, not digital in that era, just film and took picture after picture. It was one of those days where I knew that I would remember and cherish forever. My day in California Poppy Heaven! It's a must see if you are in California during the peak bloom. For all the details on the park go to Antelope Valley California Poppy Preserve. I will go back with my digital camera one day....I don't know when...but I will....
