Leg one of my race – Omaha Nebraska in North AmericaSept. 7, 2012 - I took flight 235 on Sept 7, 2012 from the international airport in Phoenix, Arizona to the airport in Omaha, Nebraska. The flight left Arizona at 6:00 pm and arrived in Omaha at 9:00 pm. My flight and journey to Omaha was uneventful unless you count losing all of your luggage something to write home about. By the time I reached my hotel I was tired but excited about what tomorrow would bring and the adventures I would have in Omaha.

• Sept. 8, 2012 - The day began by visiting three of Omaha’s most beautiful geographical locations. My instructions were to visit each site and bring back details and facts about those sites.

• I began the morning visiting the breath taking Missouri River. Omaha is built right on the Missouri River. The people of Omaha have struggled against the rising banks of the river for over 100 years. According to locals the best way to see the river is to cross over the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge. That was a terrifying but invigorating experience.

• Next on my agenda was a trip to the 2000 acre Fontanelle Forest. This is a unique protected area of forest on the Missouri River that contains both upland and lowland forest making the ecosystem very rare. There is much hiking and biking to do in this beautiful forest.

• Just when I thought I had seen all of Omaha’s natural beauty I visited the nearby Platt river one of the many smaller rivers that empty into the Missouri river. The Platt river flows through the Platt valley and served as a trail for pioneers. It is also a very important migratory path for birds and you can see all types during the year in great numbers.

• After spending the morning in the beautiful natural surroundings of Omaha. My next tasks were to visit two of the historic or man made wonders of Omaha. I began at the world famous Henry Dooly’s Zoo. The zoo is the largest indoor desert and nocturnal exhibition in the country. It has a swinging bridge and natural caves to explore. You can spend days exploring in this zoo. My last stop in Omaha was to the Boys Town, the campus made famous by Father Flannigan. This has a Hall of History where you can learn about the history of the campus and it’s mission. You can see the house of Father Flannigan. It is a great reminder of what people can accomplish when they set out to do something for someone.
