Designs of Darkness to Appall
Chapter 1 (Opening Excerpt)
It is a story without an end.
A soldier deep in the heart of the jungle, his platoon wading forward through the mud and
rain of the monsoon season. He hears the click beneath his feet. In a moment the air is thick
with charred palm leaves and flesh. Men in a small area are killed or wounded. That makes
bodies to be buried, hurt men to be treated. It makes widows and orphans and bereaved parents.
It means pension machinery, and it makes for pacifism in some and for lasting hatred in others.
Ripples in a pond.
A man out of the danger area sees the carnage the blast has created, and shoots himself in
the head. Another soldier, one who had been standing nearby just minutes before will thereafter
believe in Jesus or a rabbits foot. Another man sees the remains of his best friends skull, and
the image will haunt him in an asylum the rest of his days. The children will inherit the fathers
trauma, which will be passed to his childrens children
Ripples passing through generations.
