Museum Engages Communitythrough Innovative Program

This summer Museum Education Director April Oswald launched aninnovative new program that has already received national attention.Ms. Oswald engaged adult refugees and immigrants taking English

as a Second Language classes in the Utica City School District Adult Learn-ing Center at the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees and invitedthem to take their Thursday morning classes at the Museum of Art. Theseclasses are part of a program called Shared Traditions, which receivedsupport from the National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works and M&TBank/Partners Trust Charitable Fund. Each class spent an hour in TheGolden Age of European Painting exhibition discussing the three majorthemes of the program: adornment, ritual, and place. These themes wereselected to collectively consider wide-ranging cultural experiences, i.e.,those of 17th-and 18th- century Europe, and those of present-day immi-grants and refugees from Sudan, Myanmar, Nepal, Belarus, and else-where.

Hour two of the program was led by photographer Sylvia de Swaan, whodiscussed her work and the work of other photographers. As a refugee her-self, de Swaan fled Romania as a child during WWII. This experience, andher subsequent travel, homes, and return to her birthplace, is the subjectof her work. Program participants were given cameras and photographicassignments with themes similar to those discussed in the meetings.

A second term of the program begins in February 2015, in conjunction withan exhibition consisting of artworks from the Museum’s collection andfrom loans. The program participants’ photos and narratives will be an es-sential component of the Shared Traditions exhibition opening in February.

Museum of Art ReceivesPrestigious Grant

The Museum of Art was awarded $100,029 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Core Collections Digitization &Dissemination Project. The grant will fund the creation of 2,000 new

digital images of artworks in the Museum’s permanent collection and makethem available online as an educational resource reaching the widest possible audience.

“We are delighted to be a recipient of this IMLS grant,” said Anna D’Ambrosio,Museum of Art Director. “It will enable the Museum to make our renownedcollections more widely accessible and known. The images will be viewed internationally and used by art enthusiasts, classroom teachers, and re-searchers, among many others.” Educational texts will accompany the digitalimages, and the grant will also help to fund a new program that will makethe images and text available to anyone with computer access.

“Our grants are highly competitive. The Institute of Museum and LibraryServices enlists hundreds of library and museum professionals throughoutthe United States to review grant applications and make recommendationson projects most worthy of funding,” said IMLS Director Susan H. Hildreth.“Receiving a grant from IMLS is a significant achievement, and we congratu-late Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute for being among the 2014 IMLSmuseum grantees.” IMLS museum grants support a wide variety of projectsthat create learning experiences, strengthen communities, care for collec-tions and provide broad public access.

Take Advantage of Year-End TaxBenefits and Support MWPAI

Since our founding nearly 100 years ago, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute serves as the cultural and artistic center of our community.

We have always depended upon the generous support of our community. From our founding families through generations of members, generous An-nual Fund gifts have made a very real difference in what we have beenable to present. Consider making a tax-deductable Annual Fund gift. It’s atradition worth continuing.

Consider also a generous contribution of $1,000 or more, and become amember of the Fountain Elms Society, a circle of supporters who receive ahost of special privileges. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of your con-tribution is knowing you help enable the breadth and quality of the Insti-tute’s programming which is an investment in the quality of life of theentire region.

The Fountain Elms Society, now in its fifth year, boasts more than 130members. Our goal is to double that number over the next three years. Ifyou are already a Fountain Elms Society member, please bring a friendwhen you attend upcoming events and encourage them to get involved byjoining at one of our many membership levels

December is the last opportunity to make gifts to MWPAI and enjoy a chari-table tax deduction for 2014. Gifts to the Institute can be even more bene-ficial to the donor by making a gift of appreciated securities. Such a giftenables the donor to take a tax deduction for the full market value of thestock on the day it is transferred to the Institute therefore avoiding anycapital gains tax on the appreciation of that stock.

You can further benefit MWPAI by making your holiday purchases from Ama-zon through Amazon Smile. Go to smile.amazon.com and select a charityby typing Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in the search box. Amazondonates 0.5% of the purchase price to MWPAI.

For further information regarding the Fountain Elms Society or to find outmore about giving tax-wise gifts of securities or planned-giving options, contact Tara Sumner at 315-797-0000, ext. 2297. To donate to the AnnualFund, or become a Member, contact Anastasia Cass at ext. 2104.
