The Market * The number of adults in England who do sport at least three times a week has reached 6.93 million

* The number of men playing sport three times a week has risen by 176,000 to 4.203 million.

* Regular participation among non-white adults has increased by 98,800 to 713,800.

* During the year Oct 08 to Oct 09 (APS3) 193,300 (0.46%) adults participated in 30 minutes moderate intensity basketball at least once a week.

As is common with the overall trend in the total circula-tion of Bauer magazines in the UK is down 5.2% year on year. However, Paul Keenan, chief executive of Bauer Media says that “investing in editorial content to make magazines which are relevant, fresh and surpris-ing is a winning strategy. In 2009, quality magazines generated quality revenues. Advertisers will continue to see in 2010 that the magazine is a trusted, hugely relevant and effective channel through which they can communicate clearly and precisely with high quality audiences. Which combined with the constant year on year increase in basketball participation in the UK gives us a positive outlook for sales of MVP Magazine.

CustomersMVP Magazine appeals to a variety of segments of the sport market, the main segments are A01 Ben ABC1, A02 Jamie C2DE, A03 Chloe ABC1 and Leanne C2DE

who make up 23.4% of the English population and are the most likely to participate in basketball as a sport.

These consumers are all 18-25 years old. The main segment is Ben who also has the highest spending capacity. MVP Magazine also appeals to the older seg-ment of the sport market, in the form of parents (most often mums) purchasing the magazine for their family or children specifically.

As our main consumer Ben is a heavy internet user and has a high speed broadband connection at home. He uses this for sports news, personal emails, buying films and games and in recent months playing online poker. Ben is well educated and well informed, and is the most likely of his peers to appreciate live music, photography and graphic design, especially if com-bined with his thirst for the latest gadgets.

Another of our core consumers is Jamie. Jamie is 20 and has just finished studying for an HND at his local college. Since finishing the course he’s been unable to find a related job, he works at the local supermarket full time, but hopes to find something better soon. He lives with his parents in the family home, still very much hangs around with his school-mates.

Alongside sports participation we acknowledge that there is a market segment that engages in watch-ing basketball and buying the associated clothes, but our understanding of this segment is much less well developed. We have called this segment Kevin.
