Melbourn Village College Melbourn Village College Melbourn Village College is celebrating the best GCSE re- sults in the college’s history. The number of students achieving five or more A*-C grades, including English and Maths, this summer was 75%, a whopping five per cent increase on 2013. The college also revealed a seven per cent rise in Maths from last year, with 86 per cent of students achieving A*-C grades, 42% of them A* or A. Students at Melbourn made exceptional progress, particularly in English and Maths, regardless of their final grade, with the figures for improvement set to put the college once again in the top 25 per cent nationally based on progress made. Principal Simon Holmes said: “Staff and students are celebrating another set of excellent exam results with 90 per cent making a fantastic three levels of progress in maths and 64% making four levels, compared to the national average of 32%. “We are really pleased to see this rise in the percentage of students who achieved an A*-C grade in the core subjects of Maths and English, where 81% of students achieved A*-C in a year when nationally the pass rate dropped. “The five per cent rise in the total number of grades at A*-A across all subjects which is now 33 per cent. It is wonderful to see dedicated children thriving at the college.” Melbourn became an academy of the Comberton Academy Trust last September and is already enjoying the benefits of be- longing to a group of four schools, with the increased opportunities for both students and staff. Within the last year there have already been joint international trips with Comberton students, the chance for staff to share expertise and good practice and for the college to enjoy the economies of scale associated with a large organisation. Mr Holmes added: “We are all incredibly proud of the journey the village college has taken over the past year. Since becoming a part of the Comberton Academy Trust we have worked with the other schools to help us improve further and to continue to inspire our students to achieve even higher grades. “The development, however, does not end here. We are striving for excellence in all areas and aspire to become outstanding in every respect.” Also central to Melbourn’s success is their dedication to learning about each student as an individual. A carefully-planned induction ensures that every Year 6 student is comfortable with both the college and various members of staff within it so they are able to settle quickly with the confidence that comes from familiarity. Stephen Munday, Chief Executive of the Comberton Academy Trust, said: “This is the first set of GCSE results from Melbourn Village College since joining Comberton Academy so it is very pleasing to see the improvement made by an already good college. “We look forward to using all our expertise to ensure continued progress in the future.” Anybody interested in finding out more, particularly those with children in Year 5 or 6 at primary school, is invited to come to our interactive Open Evening on Tuesday September 29th. Smart uniform for smart learnersMelbourn Village College has undergone a transfor-

mation since becoming an academy and it was only

right that we joined an exciting future and record-

breaking results with a new uniform to reflect our am-

bition.

We set ourselves high standards in all areas and the

presentation of our students is no different.

The new uniform is bright and modern, but it keeps at

heart what Melbourn has always been - a local school

that is personal enough to know and understand each

student as an individual, but filled with the high stan-

dards and opportunities that come as part of the

Comberton Academy Trust, which also include

Comberton and Cambourne Village Colleges,

Comberton Sixth Form and The Voyager Academy,

Peterborough.

The white polo shirt and royal blue round-neck sweat-

shirt have been replaced with a professional white col-

lared shirt, navy V-neck jumper and tie in the

traditional college colours.

As well as the new everyday uniform, Melbourn also

has a new rugby top, moving from blue and white to

blue and black, with matching hooped socks.

Feedback from staff and students alike has been ex-

tremely positive already with many choosing to switch

to the new-look uniform a year ahead of the deadline

for a complete switchover.

One Year 10 student commented: “This uniform

makes you feel really smart.”
