Week 6 Term 2, 2018 MUSWELLBROOK SHIRE COUNCIL Last Thursday Ella, Rylan, Riley, Sasha, Mrs Brown and Mrs Druitt attended the annual Aboriginal flag raising ceremony as part of National Reconciliation Week. During the visit, students were personally welcomed by Mayor Martin Rush, who was presented with an invitation to our NAIDOC week celebrations. Students also met Councillor Jacinta Ledlin, spokesperson for Aboriginal Reconciliation who was interested to hear about upcoming events at Denman Public School. Councillor Ledlin presented students with multiple copies of ‘wannin thanbarran’ – A History of Aboriginal Contact in Muswellbrook and the Upper Hunter Valley. This is a fantastic resource that students will now use in Literacy activities to research local Aboriginal history. Thank you to the Muswellbrook Shire Council Reconciliation Committee for inviting Denman Public School to participate in this special ceremony. DPS NAIDOC celebrations will be held in Week 1, Term 3. We welcome the Denman community to join us for a day of celebrations including aboriginal cultural activities, a performance by our aboriginal dancers and a BBQ lunch. During our NAIDOC week celebrations all students will participate in a science show with an indigenous perspective, and a workshop with Dion Drummond, renowned aboriginal dancer, singer and storyteller. MERIT AWARDS The following students will receive merit awards this week! K – Matilda, Isabelle, Nikki 1 – Elsie, Riley, Max 2 – Xavier, Dillon, Jai 3 – Mercy, Emma, Toby 4 – Talia, Blaney, Caitlyn 5 – Conner, Blake, Phoebe 6 – Reegan, Leo, Jazmin CYBER AND ROAD SAFETY Stage 2 and 3 students welcomed Senior Constable Michael Steele, Youth Liaison Officer from the Hunter Local Area Command last week. Senior Constable Steele spoke with students on the importance of online safety and the responsibilities of being an internet user. Road safety was also addressed and students were advised by Constable Steele of correct bike safety and road rules in NSW. Thank you to Constable Steele for visiting DPS and for delivering vital messages to students. For more information on keeping our kids safe around schools visit the parents section at safetytown.com.au VISIBLE WELLBEING Mrs Fuiono and Mrs Druitt attended a Visible Wellbeing implementation day at Muswellbrook last Thursday. The day enabled school leaders from across the Upper Hunter to meet and reflect on their wellbeing journey so far and make solid plans for continuing to promote and support wellbeing in our schools. This Thursday and Friday, Mrs Fuiono and Mrs Druitt will be attending the Positive Schools 2018 conference in Sydney. This conference will provide an interactive, in-depth exploration of mental health and wellbeing, programs and strategies to support all members of our DPS community.

We have started athletics training with Dennis and really enjoyed relays last week, even Mr Garner joined in. During Term 2, Year 6 are reading War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, and it has linked well to our informative texts unit as we have researched and written about battles of World War 1. Last week Year 6 visited the Denman Heritage Village to view local artefacts as stimulus for their writing. Thank you to Mr Jeff Wolfgang for sharing his knowledge with students We have also started our new Geography unit with Year 5, ‘Factors which Shape places’. Students will be researching how people change natural environment’s in Australia and other places around the world. We have now commenced our high school transition programs and are making the most of our final 2 and a half terms of primary schooling.

DENMAN CHILDREN’S CENTRE Miss Duggan, Mrs Fuiono and Mrs Druitt, attended the Denman Children’s Centre, School Readiness Information Evening on Wednesday 23 May 2018. The evening was very positive and we look forward to working with the Denman community to ensure a smooth transition for children and families moving to formal schooling in 2019 at Denman Public School. Year 4 also visited the Denman Children’s Centre last week to visit their buddies and look forward to another visit later in the term. SPORTS REPORT Regional Cross Country Congratulations to Remmi, Ella, Keedan, Blaney and Kaitlyn who competed at the Regional Cross Country championships at Cessnock last Friday. On quite a difficult track all students tried their best and represented DPS with pride. It is a fantastic achievement to make it to Regional level. Well Done! Netball Our girls’ netball team plays against Dungog PS in round 3 of the PSSA knockout on Friday morning. Good luck Sasha, Charli, Lauren, Remmi, Phoebe, Angel, Indya, Lucy and Matilda. This match will be held on our school courts so please come along and cheer the team on! Athletic’s training Students enjoyed relay training with Dennis Pitt and look forward to improving their skills in discus this week.
