A Message from your SuperintendentGraduation is a district wide celebration. We celebrate the success of the Class of 2019. As a district, we are proud of everything our students have achieved. Our seniors have left their mark on Medina - academically, athletically, musically, and as good citizens. We know you will do great things in life!

Now, our seniors begin the next chapter of their life, as they go off to college, careers, and the military. We wish all of our graduating seniors the very best in everything that they are doing, and hope that they come back to visit us in the future. Please remember, that once you are a MUSTANG, you will ALWAYS be a MUSTANG, and you are always welcome back to visit us in the future.

Sincerely,

Mark B. Kruzynski Superintendent of Schools

Medina Students Make an Impact in the Community About 150 Medina High School students and staff chose to do something good for their school and their community on their annual Make An Impact Day.

The teams spent half their day taking on service projects or beautifying their school. Medina School District had the afternoon off, but students volunteered their time instead of leaving.

The school has been participating in this great event for several years. The rain kept many of the projects indoors, but there were some teams that were up for braving the elements and cleaning up local parks.

Great job of giving back everyone!

Middle School Students Have a Whale of a Time in BostonStudents from Clifford Wise Middle School had a great time in Boston recently. Not only did they get to explore the wealth of cultural and historic sites, they visited Fenway Park, the home of the Red Sox.

Medina Competes in Sherburne Pageant of Bands for First TimeThe Sherburne community hosted their 70th Annual Sherburne Pageant of Bands on Thursday, May 29th through Saturday, June 1, 2019. This pageant is the oldest and longest running event of its kind in New York State. The Sherburne community, the Volunteer Fire Department and the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District come together to sponsor this event.

The idea of the pageant was inspired by an Easter service on the island of Okinawa, where a massed assemblage of bands performed in 1944. The two men responsible for bringing the idea to Sherburne were the late Albert Whitney, a fireman, and the late Frank L. Miller, a band director.

There were 44 schools from around the state that participated and this was Medina’s first year and what a year it was! Medina was in Class AA for every event they performed in. In Concert Band, Medina competed against four other schools and won first place with a score of 96. In Jazz, they competed against two other schools and won first place with a score of 97.5. In Small Ensemble, Medina performed a saxophone quartet and earned first place with a score of 96.5.

The parade was the highlight of the event with 44 schools performing. Attendees began setting up their chairs on Friday night up and down the three mile route. In Class AA, Medina won first place with a score of 93.5, first place in Color Guard with a 99 and first place in Drumline with an 81. Medina also earned awards for Best Overall Color Guard, Best in Class AA, Overall High School Award and the Band Director Award to Jim Steele.

This was the last competitive performance for the band in the 2018-2019 school year and the season closed with the Band Banquet on June 7th.

Budding Oak Orchard Artists Create Safety PostersThe students at Oak Orchard Elementary recently participated in a poster design contest.

The theme was Bus Safety and students were asked to create something that represents what being safe and making smart choices on the bus means to them.

Medina CSD’s Transportation Department judged entries and a winner was chosen at each grade level.

Front Row: Elizabeth Dresser, Sophie Kroening, Annaliese Lindsey, and McKenna Gamet. Back Row: Oak Orchard Principal Julie Webber, Transportation De-partment representatives: Debbie Faltyn and Kim Heschke and Director of Transportation Rob Dennis.

Beloved Oak Orchard Kindergarten Teacher Honored with Dedication at PlaygroundKindergarten teacher Andrea Lonnen was not only beloved by her family, husband Kip and their children, Hannah, Dylan and Maggie, but by the entire Oak Orchard student body and staff. Her loss last April devastated all that knew her and loved her. “She was such a positive influence in the school community as a teacher, colleague, union member, sports fan, chick hatching expert and friend,” says Oak Orchard Elementary School Principal Julie Webber. “She worked at Oak Orchard for 18 years and we wanted her memory to live on at Medina Central School District.”

Mrs. Lonnen loved all of the students at Oak Orchard like they were her own. From the moment she welcomed them into kindergarten she made it her mission to nurture them as individuals. “One of the greatest gifts that Mrs. Lonnen gave to her students was the gift of reading,” says Mrs. Webber. “We wanted that gift to live on so we decided to install a new bench, garden and little library so that the families that visit our school’s playground could spend time together and read just like Mrs. Lonnen did with her own children and students. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Oak Orchard Student Council and Medina Teacher Association for donating the books for the little library.”

On June 7th, the dedication was held at Oak Orchard. The Lonnen children unveiled the items to the community with the hopes that it will inspire reading, family bonding and the love of learning and pay tribute to their mother’s legacy. At conclusion, the Oak Orchard students celebrated their love of Mrs. Lonnen and filled the air with bubbles as she filled their lives with the gift of learning.

Medina High School Students Learn to Make Better DecisionsWith prom and graduation season approaching, the students at Medina High School took part in a program about the impact on poor decision making.

Over 100 students gathered at the Ridgeway Fire Hall where a discussion on drugs and alcohol prevention was held by GCASA (Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse). The prevention educator, Elizabeth Aldaco, talked to the students about the dangers of addictive substances and making healthier choices. She also informed the students that she is at the high school one day a week and her door is open to anyone who wants to talk to her.

The students were then brought outside where representatives from the New York State Troopers, the Orleans County Police, the Medina Police and the Ridgeway, Shelby and Medina Fire Companies had demonstrations set up that the students rotated through on the dangers of distracted and inexperienced driving.

The students went into a driving simulator booth, operated by the

Orleans County Police, and attempted to drive while texting. They saw how easy it was to have an accident or a near accident by taking their eyes off the road for just seconds. The NYS Troopers showed what happens in a rollover crash when someone is not wearing their seatbelts. Their simulator ejected a crash dummy out the window as it spun without it being bucked in. The Medina Police Department had the students attempt to ride bicycles wearing goggles that mimic being impaired by drugs or alcohol. The final demonstration was given by local firefighters who showed off one of their fire trucks and then showed the aftermath of a car accident using vehicles donated by Lyons Collision.

The demonstrations had a very real and meaningful impact on the high schoolers as they saw the dangers of being a distractive driver. The school district is very grateful to the first responders that spent time with the students to show them how one bad choice can affect their lives and the lives of others.
