Conventional chemically sharpened needlepoint hooks are extremely sharp and offer quick penetration with a small entry hole. Yet, to achieve such sharpness, metal is ground away until the point is very sharp... but, sometimes also very weak. Many believe “bent” or “roll over” hook point results from this sharpening process. To address this problem, Mustad, the world’s leader in hook technology created the revolutionary premium hook design - ULTRAPOINT™.

ULTRA SHARPULTRAPOINT™ is created using state-of-the-art, three stage Opti-Angle™ sharpening technology which removes less metal from the point than traditional methods – without compromising sharpness.

ULTRA STRONGThe hook is then put through innovative three stage computer-controlled tempering process - Nor Temper™. This advance heat treatment transforms the hook into a fine grained, ultra strong micro-structure, increasing the strength up to 30% compared to conventional tempering methods. ConventionalNeedle Point

Making the sharpest point can mean leaving it dangerously weak, as the grinding and chemical sharpening process removes metal from the point of the hook. This can lead to the point rolling over when it comes into contact with gravel, or even losing sharpness when immersed for long periods. The UltraPoint three-stage grinding technology produces an incredibly sharp needle point, but because more of the metal remains, the point won’t roll or lose sharpness. Result: The sharpest and strongest hook in the world.

A Perspective on PerfectionIn the mid-90’s a close group of walleye pros were generating tremendous results with a new technique called Slow Death. Incredible action was being added to live-bait presentations by bending hooks in a certain fashion. I knew it was something special, but because I couldn’t master the precise hook bend, I was getting really inconsistent results. Working with the Mustad Product Development Team, Keith and I spent countless hours testing hook bends until we perfected a hook design that anybody could rig effectively.

To RigAttach a bottom-bouncer weight to your main line. Add a 4-6 foot, 10 lb monofilament leader and attach hook. Thread half a night crawler up the hook shank over the hook eye. There should be 1/4” to 1/2” of night crawler hanging off the hook.

To fishUse your trolling motor and keep speeds from 1 mph to almost nothing. The key is to keep just enough speed so the crawler spins. Can also be used effectively when drifting.
