Voice of the day “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”

AFTER THE ELECTION, WHAT NOW? After living through a period of intense division, enhanced by a contentious presidential contest and made more urgent by a pandemic, what do we do now as a nation? And what should the role of the church be in this pluralistic post-election democratic society? It seems to me that it is the time to be forming consciences for faithful citizenship. Despite the richness of our Scriptures and tradition, we managed to find our church as divided as any other body in the country. We found ourselves in a "Facebook mentality" of either "liking" or "disliking" what we heard from the pulpit, filtered through our political lenses and our own sense of infallibility. We witnessed bishops issuing statements and tweets at odds with each other about the correct interpretation of our teachings. We even see the pope's teachings and priorities met with cool indifference or downright disdain. Priests saw fit to pronounce condemnation of entire political parties on social media, sometimes with episcopal endorsement. Others, walked away because they could not countenance their church implicitly affirming the most amoral occupant of the White House in anyone's memory. How do we move forward now? Scripture and tradition teach us that it is the Evil One who sows division. So many of St. Paul's epistles were trying to get his readers to overcome their divisions that were rooted in anything but Christ. In his recent encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, the pope points us toward Christ as the answer. [Bishop John Stowe, Order of Friars Minor Conventual, is the Bishop of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky.]

WHY DO PEOPLE LEAVE THE CHURCH? About half say they do not believe. Many consider faith and religion to be incompatible with science and rational thinking. Relativism and a culture of self-invention often result in objective truth being considered judgmental, oppressive, and intolerant. For Hispanic Catholics, many did not receive appropriate catechesis, and most simply drift away. “After my mom died, I was like , ‘No, there’s definitely no God for me.’” (from Bishop Robert Barron)

WE ALL KNOW PEOPLE WHO ARE “UNAFFILIATED”

Do you know that 79% of people who “disaffiliate” from religion do so before they are 24 years old? 26% of adults in the US are unaffiliated. There are 6.5 former Catholics for every convert to the faith. 1 in 4 Hispanics is a former Catholic. There are 26.1 million baptized Americans who do not practice their faith. (Bishop Robert Barron)

WAYS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Try not to waste food. Try to purchase, cook or order only what you can reasonably eat, since food production requires a lot of energy and water. Also, food thrown out creates a high amount of methane, a Green House Gas, which contributes to global warming. And wasted food is food that someone else could have eaten. Calculate your carbon footprint. Understanding which activities are carbon-intensive allows you to know where you can

take action. Reducing carbon reduces Green House Gases. Try: www.conservation.org/carbon-footprint-calculator#/.

POPE FRANCIS SPEAKS IN FRATELLI TUTTI “I realize that some people are hesitant and fearful with regard to migrants. I consider this part of our natural instinct of self-defense. Yet it is also true that an individual and a people are only fruitful and productive if they are able to develop a creative openness to others.” (No. 41)

FORMAS EN QUE USTED Y SU FAMILIA PUEDEN HACER LA DIFERENCIA No desperdicie comida.
