“ Never having taken a music lesson in my entire life, I am now finishing my third year of studying flute at CMCB. One of my most moving experiences was two years ago while I performed in the annual Performathon and had my playing enjoyed by my aunt’s family in Seattle, while it was being streamed on the internet. Going global after two years! Try it.”

musiC tHerapyDiscovering Capabilities, Exploring Possibilities.
Welcome to Music Therapy at Community Music Center of Boston. for over 35 years we have been enhancing the music lives of students with special needs—learning from our students who come from all walks of life, all ages and lifestyles.
What Is Music Therapy?Music Therapy is the skillful use of music to promote, maintain and restore physical, social, cognitive and emotional health. When music is used as therapy, its nonverbal, imaginative, organizing and emotional qualities help enhance communication, build confidence and self-expression, accelerate healing and development, and support academic achievement.
Why Music Therapy at CMCB ?As the longest continuous provider of Music Therapy in Greater Boston, we believe our key to success comes from building resourceful relationships with students and families.
Music Therapy SessionsOur music therapy sessions are student-centered and focus on empowering capabilities within an innovative and attentive therapy relationship:
Individual sessions are tailored to the needs and goals of each student. Our students develop their life skills by exploring music through percussion, songwriting, piano, movement, guitar, creative improvisation, music technology and their own voice. We view family and care-givers as team members and value their involvement in helping us build a confident and encouraging therapy experience.
Group sessions allow participants to belong to a community that focuses on their abilities and contributions. Sessions are highlighted by songwriting, percussion circles, song discussion and group improvisation. Through interactive peer-relationships that build a vibrant community spirit, group members take pride in developing their social sensibilities.
Let’s Have a Conversation! Our Music Therapists are available to discuss all aspects of our program with you, learning about and focusing on your specific needs. We’ll schedule a first visit and tour so we can get to know each other better before commitments are made.
CMCB understands the cost challenges of Music Therapy, so please ask about our financial aid opportunities.
“Our autistic daughter, who had never before communicated
at any level, literally ‘found her voice’ in a music therapy session.
This discovery has opened up a new world of potential for her,
and she is now a musical star at her school for students with
special needs.”
