The Big Cage ...................................................... by Karl King One of Karl King’s many circus marches, The Big Cage was written in 1934 and dedicated to Clyde Beatty, a famous lion tamer. Like many circus galops, it fea-tures florid runs, bombastic brass, and a considerably faster tempo than its an-cestor, an earlier European dance form. King himself was known to conduct The Big Cage at breakneck speed.

On A Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss ................ by David Holsinger Dr. David R. Holsinger is an American composer and conductor writing primarily

for concert band. On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss is a departure from his style. The frantic

tempos, the ebullient rhythms often associated with Holsinger are replaced with a

restful, gentle, and reflective composition based on the 1876 Philip Bliss – Horatio

Spafford hymn, “It is Well with my Soul“.

Arabian Dances ....................................... by Brian Balmages

Explore Middle Eastern sounds with this work that combines authentic tradi-tional melodies and rhythms with original music. After a haunting opening, Mid-dle Eastern percussion instruments create the groove that accompanies the folk song Ala Dal’ona. Original themes are intertwined before the percussion ensem-ble becomes the focus of the third section. The final melody, Tafta Hindi, devel-ops until it morphs into an ostinato over the recurring theme. A riveting close follows!

Flight ....................................................... by Claude T. Smith Flight is the official march of the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. It was commissioned by the Air Force Band in 1984 and was premiered by the organization in November of that year. Their recording can be still heard as visi-tors enter the museum. A highly descriptive work, it incorporates Pachel-bel’s Canon in the opening section before the brass introduces a soaring theme.

INTERMISSION

2016-2017 Season

Contre Qui .. by Morten Lauridsen, trans. H Robert Reynolds

Originally written by renowned choral composer Morten Lauridsen, this warm and dignified setting is beautifully arranged for concert band by H. Robert Reynolds. Phrasing is of the utmost importance to fully reflect the beautiful harmonies. The eloquence of the piece is stunningly gorgeous from the first note to the last. Breathtaking!

Three London Miniatures .................... by Mark Camphouse

Three London Miniatures was commissioned for the Woodward Academy Bands in College Park, GA and premiered in Atlanta in 1998. “Westminster Hymn” centers around a sturdy original hymn tune with a decidedly Anglican flavor. Intermittent brass fanfares represent the regal and ceremonial tradi-tions of Westminster Abbey. “For England's Rose” is an expressive, lyrical tribute to the late Princess Diana (1961-1997). “Kensington March” is a spirit-ed, petite march in English style.

Fantasia in G ............................................. by Timothy Mahr Fantasia in G was composed in 1982 and premiered by the composer in Janu-ary, 1983. The piece was inspired by the first line of Friedrich Schiller’s poem Ode to Joy: Freude, Schoner Gotterfunken (Joy, Bright Spark of Divinity) and the melody from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony . The work originated as an organ recessional for his brother’s wedding, and Mahr has stated that the work was intended to “get people out of the church.”

Redwood ..................................................... by Ryan George

One of the most majestic sights in the world is the tall redwood trees in Cali-fornia's Sequoia National Park. “These trees command attention with their immense stature, their size the result of years gone by and storms weathered. And yet they exude a peaceful and subtle tranquility", states the composer. This idea of "Powerful Tranquility" became the cornerstone upon which Red-wood is based.

Manhattan Beach ................................ by John Phillip Sousa The CWO is joined by young Gaston County musicians.

Following in the footsteps of Patrick Gilmore, Sousa became a popular figure at Manhattan Beach, the famous New York summer resort. Sousa once told a reporter that the march was derived from an earlier compo-sition, probably “The Phoenix March” (1875): “I wrote ‘Manhattan Beach’ while playing a summer engagement at that once-popular resort, using as the basis an old march I had composed when I was with Milton Nobles.” After spending twelve years as the seventeenth director of “The President’s Own” from 1880 to 1892, John Philip Sousa went on to form his own civilian band at the urging of concert promoter David Blakely. Sousa enjoyed tremen-dous success with his Sousa Band, traveling extensively throughout the conti-nental United States and abroad.

Popcopy; I. More Cowbell ........................ by Scott McAlister

Popcopy is a work in three movements inspired by modern culture in America. “More Cowbell!” is based on a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken, who coins the phrase: “I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!” Throughout this movement, six cowbells sur-round the ensemble, intentionally creating a struggle of balance between the winds

About Carolinas Wind Orchestra

Carolinas Wind Orchestra was founded over twenty years ago, as a community band and part of the Winthrop University music curriculum for advanced wind and percussion majors. At least eight CWO musicians are Winthrop University music students selected by Dr. Lorrie Crochet each semester. CWO rehearses at Winthrop University Byrnes Auditorium and is around 90 musicians strong. Community CWO musicians are adults from eight North Carolina and South Carolina counties.

CWO is a true community band, all instrumentalists are volunteers. Members are

selected by audition with over 75% holding bachelor or higher music degrees. Ap-

proximately half work in or are retired music educators. Other’s occupations range

from accountants to an airline pilot. CWO is a not-for-profit corporation with the

formal objective of “perpetuating the community concert band as part of the tradi-

tion of American music, through public performance of concert band literature

played by musicians of advanced proficiency. “

Dr. Lorrie Crochet, Music Director of Carolinas Wind Or-chestra, is currently associate professor of music and di-rector of bands at Winthrop University, where she also chairs music education, and teaches instrumental music education courses. Dr. Crochet earned her bachelor’s de-gree in music education from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and both her master’s degree in wind con-ducting and doctorate in music education from the Univer-sity of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where she studied with Gary Green and Nicholas DeCarbo.
