WELCOMEMUSICA VIVAINTERNATIONALCONCERT SEASON 2017

2017 heralds an astonishing year of debut performances at Musica Viva, led by an amazing group on its first ever concert tour of Australia – the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. This legendary ensemble has chiselled out a unique niche in international music, and is directed on this tour by renowned solo violinist and period music specialist Rachel Podger.

Just as unique, but as different from OAE as it is possible to be, the American contemporary music group Eighth Blackbird undertakes its first Australian tour for Musica Viva. Widely applauded as the finest of its kind, ʻ8BB’ has established an enviable global reputation for its immaculate performances of repertoire that is almost entirely commissioned by the group.

Audiences from the Musica Viva Festival in 2013 will recall stunning performances by the Pacifica Quartet, also touring for us nationally for the first time this year. Two marvellous musicians who featured in the same festival two years later join the cavalcade of musical treasures for 2017 as the powerhouse cello–piano duo of Nicolas Altstaedt and Aleksandar Madžar.

The Takács Quartet returns to Australia after a five-year absence. It has toured for Musica Viva a record-breaking eight times since its formation in Budapest in 1975, making it reasonable to claim this as the most loved group in Musica Viva history. Another artist who can't appear often enough for us is the Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, who this time brings programs constructed around Bach Partitas, as part of her continuing mission to perform the complete solo keyboard works of Bach around the world. The final ‘return’ tour for 2017 is the Sitkovetsky Trio, who made a massive impact on their debut national appearances for us in 2014.

Few activities are as engaging or rewarding as listening to the finest chamber music, and it is a rare privilege each year to be able to hand-pick a harmonious collection. It has taken literal years to assemble this particular set of artists, and to refine the perfect matching repertoire to best reflect Musica Viva's guiding principles of quality, diversity, challenge and joy.

Concerts by Eighth Blackbird celebrate the joy of the new. The closest thing classical music has to a rock band, this ensemble – described by the LA Times as a collection of ‘supermusicians’ – revels in the work of living composers, played with love, virtuosity and enjoyment.Composer Nico Muhly wanted to write for Eighth Blackbird ‘the most fun piece possible’; Doublespeak was created for a festival honouring Philip Glass, and toys wittily with his familiar minimalist soundworld. Bryce Dessner (from indie pop band The National) weaves folk music and grisly murder ballad traditions into an enthralling contemporary pondering of violence and American identity. Holly Harrison, from western Sydney, is a bright new star in the Australian composition sky. Winner of numerous international prizes for her strikingly imaginative works, she has been commissioned by Geoff Stearn and Musica Viva’s Hildegard Project to create new music for this tour. Ted Hearne’s amazing, intense work By-By Huey was inspired by painter Robert Arneson’s portrait of the man who killed a co-founder of the Black Panther Party; when self-destruction is the theme, the music tends to get wild… Checkered Shade is Timo Andres’ extraordinary response to the finely detailed work of artists Astrid Bowlby and Edward Gorey: he describes it as ‘a gradual zoom outward’ that coalesces to a delicately serene chorale.

“EXQUISITE AND DRAMATIC…AT ONCE FINELY THOUGHT-OUT AND EXALTING” THE SUNDAY TIMES

Angela Hewitt is acclaimed as one of the world’s great pianists, especially adored for her interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach and like-minded composers, where her delight in intricate filigree finds greatest room for expression. Everything about her approach to playing music – rigorous research, faultless technique, emotional openness – serves to highlight the innate beauty in each work she plays. For the first of her 2017 tour programs, the dancing counterpoint of Bach’s partitas makes a natural connection to the miniature delicacies of Scarlatti sonatas, and to the Baroque inspirations behind two exquisite French works. The breathtakingly tricky toccata which concludes Ravel’s Sonatine requires a pianist of tremendous ability – the composer himself was too afraid to record it! Chabrier’s whimsical, 19th-century take on a Baroque dance form makes his Bourrée fantasque a joy: rhythmical, clever, and utterly French.

The second program offers the pleasure of exploring the musical lineage between teachers and students. Beethoven knew, played and loved the Preludes and Fugues of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, at a time when that late master’s music was considered old-fashioned. Recognising a true genius, Beethoven referred to Bach as the Father of Harmony; and made a respectful pun on the German meaning of Bach (brook), calling him ‘not a brook but an ocean’. Beethoven’s Classical, clear-textured F minor Sonata is dedicated to a real-life mentor rather than a historical one: his sometime teacher Joseph Haydn. And in turn, the dedicatee of the famous ‘Moonlight’ Sonata was Beethoven’s own pupil, the Austrian countess and famous beauty Giulietta Guicciardi. Angela Hewitt’s fleet fingers seem perfectly formed both for its eternally beloved slow movement, and for the quicksilver drama of its thrilling finale.

Exhilarating, exuberant, virtuosic: the Pacifica Quartet has won hearts around the world for its passionate performances. Treading that miraculous line between naked emotion and scrupulous musicianship, a concert with the Pacificas becomes an engrossing sensory experience for the audience. Such intensity throws a brilliant light onto the pure, architectural beauty of a cherished Haydn quartet. Mendelssohn’s magnificent first string quartet shows its teenage composer’s obsession with Beethoven – whose final quartet is the centrepiece of Program 2. The heart-on-sleeve, melodic riches of these two early Romantic geniuses are natural territory for these performers. Although it’s only a little over a decade old, the second quartet by master Australian composer Nigel Westlake fits perfectly in this context, offering players and listeners an enticing palette of lyricism and rhythm. Shostakovich holds a special place in the life of the Pacifica Quartet. Their recordings of all of his quartet works have few rivals; and their visionary performances of his complete quartet cycle in London's Wigmore Hall were unanimously hailed as outstanding. Shostakovich’s Quartet no 3 reflects the dark days of the USSR, veering between tragedy and satire in music that leaves no listener unmoved.

Three young virtuosi with countless solo prizes and achievements to their names: together, the music-making of the Sitkovetsky Trio is little short of miraculous. In their hands the piano trio becomes a miniature orchestra, making huge worlds of colour and texture from their personal, intimate musical format. Pianist Wu Qian and violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky met as students at the Menuhin School; cellist Danjulo Ishizaka comes from the finest German tradition. There is something utterly gorgeous about their performances: so vivid, it’s as though they are sharing their freshest, most delighted first impressions with their listeners. Following the ecstatic audience response to their 2014 debut tour for Musica Viva, the Trio was immediately invited to return. Rachmaninoff’s Trio élégiaque no 1, written while still studying with Tchaikovsky, has glimpses of that composer throughout. Its decidedly Russian flavour finds a cousin in Shostakovich’s second trio, which likewise reflects on mortality, from its ghostly opening cello solo through to the emotionally wrenching danse macabre of the finale.

Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth drew on his studies in Japan when creating his Piano Trio. Taking inspiration from a shakuhachi melody known as Pounding Wave, the Trio grows organically through its three movements, moving ever forward with the ‘relentless power of the ocean’. This program progresses from darkness to light. Mendelssohn's Trio, although in the usually gloomy key of D minor, stands alongside his Octet as one of his most captivating works. Concluding with one of the showiest, most dazzling, life-affirming finales in the repertoire, it makes a perfect end to a thoroughly uplifting concert.

10 – 28 AUGUST QUARTET

The Takács Quartet has made eight previous tours for Musica Viva. The secret behind the enduring love affair between this world-renowned ensemble and its Australian public is both the simplest and the hardest thing about chamber music: the interplay between four very different creative personalities as they meld their sound into an amazing unity.

Their concerts glow with warmth and friendship, a mutual affection and happiness whose effects reach far out into the auditorium. One of the top quartets in the business, it’s a given that their performances are of the highest quality. They enjoy a challenge and relish getting their teeth into demanding repertoire. And they take their listeners with them, pleased to pause for a moment to explain stories behind the music, and to make it an enjoyable, shared experience for everyone in the room.

Haydn’s op 76 was his final complete chamber music collection, and he threw at it everything he had learned about string quartets in his long and glorious career. Beethoven’s op 127 is also a late work, gentler and more introverted than the violent storms of his earlier ‘heroic’ period. Dvořàk’s Quartet no 14 is his very last purely chamber piece, whose joyous Czech folk elements bring out a delicious zest in the open-hearted Takács playing style.

Carl Vine won’t say if the placement of his brand new work in programs full of late ones engenders a certain nervousness. But it is a fitting position for a composer of his established international reputation, and for one with such a long personal friendship with the musicians on stage. The genesis of this world premiere is a neat emblem of chamber music itself - composer and performers sharing ideas with the audience through mutual love of the artform.

Two brilliant adventurers set out across an enthralling musical landscape when Nicolas Altstaedt and Aleksandar Madžar step onto the stage. This is how great artists play: with imagination, with attention to style, with flexibility of technique, and above all a great sense of being in love with the music. As a result, every recital feels fresh and exciting, glowing with the thrill of discovery. ‘How will we play this work today?’

Nicolas Altstaedt is a leading light of his generation, with a diverse career that encompasses orchestral concertos, artistic direction, festival programming, and of course chamber music (usually the bit that all musicians like best!). Aleksandar Madžar is no less accomplished, as a busy soloist, teacher and a particularly sought-after chamber music colleague.

The tour repertoire chosen by this intrepid duo offers a delicious survey of cello sonatas. Brahms’s second

sonata, the earliest music on the program, served in varying degrees as inspiration for all the others. Debussy’s Cello Sonata was a late work, written in difficult days; its satisfied composer mused on the ‘power of the right chord in the right place’. Nadia Boulanger’s Three Pieces give a tantalising, attractive glimpse of a composer more renowned for teaching. Possibly the only well-known American not to study with her was Samuel Barber, whose Sonata cellists love to play because ‘it lets the cello sing.’ Shostakovich’s Sonata is a relatively early piece, composed after he had broken up with his wife but before he married her again, which perhaps explains its extraordinary emotional journey. And a little homage to Shostakovich (a four-note motif based on his initials) sneaks its way into the Sonata by Britten. Taking us up to the present day is a new work from a young Australian composer, who happens to be a cellist as well: Adelaide’s Jakub Jankowski.

Britain’s most revolutionary orchestra makes its first, widely anticipated full tour of Australia in 2017, for Musica Viva. Formed 30 years ago by a democratic group of period instrument specialists, it continues to break new ground in what it means to be an orchestra, creating concerts where brilliant execution is matched onstage by gleeful enjoyment. In this case, the Orchestra is a band of 20 expert musicians, playing on authentic instruments including two Classical-era oboes and ‘natural’ horns as well as strings, led by the acclaimed violinist Rachel Podger. One of the best-known and universally respected players in her field, Rachel is most familiar to Australian listeners through her countless beautiful recordings of early music. The wonderful, forward-looking, revolutionary epoch which gives the Orchestra its name is brought to enchanting life through heavenly violin concertos by Mozart, and a sparkling sinfonia by his teacher Johann Christian Bach (the ‘London’ Bach). The Age of Enlightenment spanned the full length of the 18th century: a catch-all title for a European burst of interest in experimentation, clarity, and reason. Haydn’s Symphony no 36 sets the tone perfectly, as the epitome of grace – not least in a ravishing slow movement which is practically a tiny violin concerto in itself. Lovers of chamber music adore the OAE as a kind of supersized chamber ensemble. Each player brings a soloistic level of talent and engagement to a greater whole – and the effect is unforgettable!

The Hildegard Project in support of women in composition was launched in April 2015, and was made possible by generous initial funding given by Katherine Grinberg in honour of the late Adrienne Nagy and her sister Yolanda (Nagy) Daniel. Together with the Ken Tribe Fund for Australian Composition, and the support of many kind donors around Australia, Musica Viva is able to continue its proud tradition of creating new Australian work across all of its activities.

HOLLY HARRISON

Holly Harrison has been commissioned by Geoff Stearn and Musica Viva’s Hildegard Project to create a new work for Eighth Blackbird, ideal interpreters for Holly’s imaginative musical vernacular which melds the visceral fervour of rock and jazz with a keen interest in rhythm, humour and the literature of Lewis Carroll. In 2015 Holly worked on pieces for Ensemble Offspring, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows, Sydney Youth Orchestras, Orchestra of the 21st Century (RKST21), Orkest de Ereprijs and Het Gelders Orkest, and was Composer in Residence at Prairiewood High School in Sydney’s south west.

NIGEL WESTLAKE

Nigel Westlake’s second string quartet was dedicated to its commissioner, the late Kenneth Tribe AC, a visionary figure in the Australian cultural landscape, and former Artistic Director of Musica Viva. Premiered by the Goldner String Quartet in 2005, the work makes a welcome return for the 2017 season as part of the Pacifica Quartet’s national tour. Nigel is one of Australia’s favourite composers, rising to international prominence as a composer for screen and film, with credits including Miss Potter, both of the Babe movies, Paper Planes and Imax films such as Antarctica and Solarmax. He was Composer-in-Residence for the 2012 Australian Festival of Chamber Music. His musical tribute to his son, Missa solis: Requiem for Eli, was winner of the 2013 Paul Lowin Prize, the 2011 Limelight Award for Best New Composition, and Orchestral Work of the Year at the 2012 APRA/AMC Art Music Awards.

LACHLAN SKIPWORTH

Perth’s Lachlan Skipworth is currently Composer-in-Residence with West Australian Symphony Orchestra. His individual and highly personal compositional language is coloured by three years spent in Japan, where his immersion in the study of the shakuhachi bamboo flute inevitably became part of his muse. Lachlan’s shakuhachi-inspired Piano Trio was commissioned by Julian Burnside AO QC for performance at the 2015 Musica Viva Festival, and will make its International Concert Season debut in 2017 in the hands of the remarkable Sitkovetsky Trio.

CARL VINE AOCarl Vine is one of Australia's best known and most frequently performed composers, with a catalogue including seven symphonies, eleven concertos, music for film, television, dance and theatre, electronic music and numerous chamber works. His most recent commissions include Five Hallucinations for the Chicago and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, and Wonders for Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Carl has been Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia since 2000, and was commissioned by the outgoing Chairman of Musica Viva, Michael Katz together with his wife Frédérique, to compose String Quartet no 6 for the 2017 concert tour of the Takács Quartet. The commission is also supported by The Seattle Commissioning Club and Carnegie Hall.

JAKUB JANKOWSKIJakub Jankowski is a young Adelaide-based composer. He holds a Bachelor of Music with Honours in Composition from the Elder Conservatorium of Music, where he has studied with Charles Bodman-Rae, Graeme Koehne, John Polglase and David Harris. In May 2015, Jakub’s double concerto Ritual, for two cellos and string orchestra, was featured in performance at Elder Hall, Adelaide. In 2014 he was the recipient of the South Australian Accompanists’ Guild’s Composition Award. His new cello sonata, commissioned for cellist Nicolas Altstaedt and pianist Aleksandar Madžar, is supported by the Australian Executor Trustees Community Program and Adelaide Commissioning Circle of donors.
