EThe four basic tenets I apply when devising Musica Viva concerts are Quality, Diversity, Challenge and Joy, and this year’s Coffee Concerts are a perfect example of how these principles transmute into musical enjoyment. All of this year’s performers are, as usual, of the highest calibre, and are chosen for the exuberance and joy they each bring to the concert platform. But 2018 excels in diversity and challenge.

From the entirely unexpected but utterly compelling guitar–cello duo of Karin Schaupp & Umberto Clerici, through to the burnished golden tones of the Australian Brass Quintet, there is an extraordinary range of ensemble styles and repertoire. The outstanding artistry of Australia’s finest chamber group, the Goldner String Quartet, draws us back into more classic fare, as will whichever world-beating young piano trio

or string quartet emerges as the Grand Prize Winner of the 2018 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. That won’t be known until just a few days before their Coffee Concert appearance.

Although all of these musicians have strong overseas connections, the most convincing international credentials come from the winner of the 2017 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Ioana Cristina Goicea in her debut Australian appearance accompanied by pianist Andrey Gugnin.

Sydney’s Coffee Concerts for 2018 are an arresting combination of talent and intriguing content, and an exemplary embodiment of Musica Viva’s core principles.

Karin Schaupp GuitarUmberto Clerici Cello

Karin Schaupp and Umberto Clerici first shared a concert stage as part of the 2015 Musica Viva Festival, where the combination of guitar and cello proved a major hit. In 2018, these superb musicians bring a program of songs from across five centuries, reimagined for guitar and cello. The program takes the audience on a journey through life, from childhood to a reflection on death and all that comes in between: love, jealousy, family, illness, battles and joys.

There’s simply nothing like the sound of a great brass quintet – bold, sparkling, and with the air-shaking splendour of perfectly tuned harmonics. With more than 15 years of experience playing together in different ensembles, the five virtuosi of the Australian Brass Quintet bring finesse and sensitivity in equal measure to every concert they play. Their program is a collage of colourful dances, songs and fanfares from around the world, culminating in Joan Tower’s glistening Copperwave.

Concluding the 2018 season is the ever-popular Goldner String Quartet, with a program exploring the first quartets of Shostakovich, Webern and Prokofiev. Approaching their 25th anniversary in 2020, Australia’s premier string quartet remains in demand internationally as performers and recording artists. With no changes to their line-up since their inception in 1995, the Goldners bring unmatched musical intuition to every phrase. It’s this closeness that makes them so appealing to watch in performance – every motion and every glance appears in the music as well.

Appearing in Australia for the first time in over 20 years, legendary pianist Sir András Schiff performs an imaginative program of brilliance and transcendent beauty. As always with this artist, Bach is at the heart of everything: his ingenuity and virtuosity, as well as his deep faith and humanity, shine through the music of the famous 19th-century composers who followed in his steps.
