Paper planes – M.I.AReleased February 2008

Why I chose this songI chose this song because it is one of my favourite songs, it is a mix of genres which creates a unique sound, very catchy beat and sound effects. The urban, alternative feel to the song and unusual lyrics about modern urban life also gave me lots of ideas about what I could include and gave me a wide range of city locations to use and the different styles and outfits I could dress my models in.

Moodboard

I want to make the video

quite urban and even

have a slight indie feel

so it feels more raw than

a typical glossy RnB

video

Lyrics and musicThe song’s lyrics are about immigrants and how they are perceived and stereotyped by people. It also includes lyrics about drug use.

The song is partially autobiographical as M.I.A herself survived a war in Sri Lanka and endured hardship in her life as a refugee in London.

The lyrics ‘all I wanna do is take your money’ represents the view of people like immigrants not contributing anything to society and the first worlds obsession with money.

I want to make the video quite fast tempo and interesting with lots of cross cuts to different scenes because the song is fast tempo and very upbeat.

Target audience

• Teenagers to adults, mainly young adults

• Niche song that went very big, some controversial topics in lyrics

• People who are a fan of and enjoy rap, hip-hop, R’n’B music

• Vintage/urban/interesting music video

• Slumdog millionaire soundtrack

Andrew Goodwin's conventions

• Relationship between lyrics and visuals – I will have the person in my music video perform the lyrics, miming to the song. I also want to use money and fake toy gun in the video in the chorus with the gunshot and cash machine sound effects.

• Relationship between music and visuals – I hope to make the video fairly fast pace and have fast cut clips put together in time to the music. (1:04)

• Close ups – I am planning on using close-ups on my models face as she performs the lyrics of the song and different shots of her from many angles.

• Genre style/iconography – I am using some typical conventions of RnB/hip hop/rap videos such as filming a lot in black & white and in an urban location. I am also putting in a lot of thought to her styling, outfit, hair & make-up to fit the genre and feel of the music video.
