Page 3: Music Video Deconstruction

First Feature• Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. For

example boy/girl bands have a routine. Singer/songwriters are either on stage by themselves or are accompanied by a guitar.

• This video matches the feature that Andrew Goodwin noticed, the singer is standing alone on screen. Only 10 seconds into the song, she is seen singing alone, backing up the stereotypes of singer/songwriters.

• Then 32 seconds into the song she is seen in a performance this is not often done by singer/songwriters, but this challenges the stereotypes and theory of Goodwin.

Second Feature• There is a relationship between the

lyrics and visuals. These are either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting.

• In this music video there are numerous shot that the lyrics match with the shot that can be seen on the video. The main lyrics that match the visuals on screen are those of the title of the song.

• At 1:02 in the song the lyrics heard are “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, at this point there are two men that tense their arm muscles, this helps to emphasise the lyrics that are being sang.

Second Feature

•This is again shown at 1:37 when she sings “I’d come back swinging”, at this point there is a shot of a few people mining swinging a bat.

Third Feature• There is a relationship between

the music and visuals. These are either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting.

• Again with this song there is plenty of on beat editing, it is usually as the drums are being beaten.

• At 1:14 as the drums are being beaten there is a banging which is supported by the dancers jumping up and down as the beat goes on.

Fourth Feature• There are demand of the record

label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.

• In Kelly Clarkson’s songs there are normally close ups of her as this what she is normally known for and is expected to do during her songs.

• There are plenty of close ups in this video, they remain to show throughout the music video.

Fifth Feature• There is frequent reference to

the notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

• In this music video there are many shots of Kelly of looking through TV screens.

• An example of this would be at the beginning (0:07) and throughout (1:35).

• There are not many shots that express the voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

Page 9: Music Video Deconstruction

Sixth Feature• There are often intertextual

reference to films, TV programmes and other music videos.

• Again in this video it is hard to describe what intertextual references are in the music video without actually knowing what they are.

• The flash mob type act is taken from the idea of flash mobs which are a very recent thing.
