Music videos demonstrates genre characteristics

One of the ways that this music video demonstrates the characteristics of the indie genre is through the retro theme portrayed throughout. For example the video opens with a car that is made in the 60’s. The artist Marina herself has an old fashioned image that she continues not only in her music and music videos, but within her general look. This continued theme builds recognition for the audience and creates a nostalgic feel for fans. This music video also uses a lot of extreme close ups. The camera shots allow the audience to see the emotion on the artist’s face, which in this case, is usually quite a sad/deep expression. Portraying emotion is important in indie music and music videos because the audience need to be able to relate to the song. This music video is heavily performance based. The ending of the video conforms to genre characteristics because Marina performs a dance, showcasing her talent to the videos audience.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals

As this music video doesn’t include any narrative, there isn’t a lot of correlation between the lyrics of the song and the visuals. However, there are some subtle links. The artist makes repeated references to the colour blue whenever she sings the lyric “blue. For example, when the artist sings the lyrics “I don’t wanna feel blue”, she leans back onto a blue car. There is also another part in the music video where the artist sings this same lyric and she is singing while the shot uses blue lighting. Another example of where there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals is when the artist says “Give me one more night” and holds up one finger. The artist repeats this motion more than once in the video, and in fact a lot of indie artists generally also do this.

There is a relationship between music and visuals

The relationship between the music and visuals was exaggerated in the editing of the music video. In the beginning of the music video, the cutting rhythm is extremely slow to match the slow pace of the song.

There is a shot where the song speeds up and there is quite a prominent drum beat. The artist purposely and stiffly moves her shoulders to this beat.

There is also a part in the music video where the artist is on a fair ground ride. When the music speeds up, the ride speeds up too.

Music video meets demands of the record label

One way in which the music video meets the demands of the record label is through advertising. This video advertises jewelry from Pandora. Creating sponsorship and marketing deals allows the label to make money.

Another way that the music video meets the demands of the record label is through the camera angles. This music video uses a lot of close ups and so a lot of recognition is created. The more the audience see the artist’s face, the more likely they will be to remember it.

This music video also markets the artist well through the performance aspect. The end of the video shows the artist showcasing her dancing skills.
