Ed Sheeran – Lego House Video Analysis The music video is based on the fact that the singer once claimed that he looked like Ron Weasley from Harry Potter played by Rupert Grint. The genre of the song is indie pop because of the pop hooks used within the tune of the song as well as the use of pale colours within the video. This helps make the video seem less glamourous and less exaggerated, which is an idea of realism. The song is amplified through its video. When just listening to the song without seeing the video it seems as though it is written about a couple where Ed is singing to his partner about how much he loves her, however the video completely contradicts that by making it about Rupert Grint and Ed Sheeran. During the first half of the video it seems as though it is a meant to be humorous as it seems like Rupert is meant to be portraying Ed because they are both ginger. However halfway through the video we discover that Grint is actually playing a character who is obsessed with Ed Sheeran, even going as far as going on stage as though he is Sheeran himself. This changes the meaning of the song as it is now clear that in the video is written from Grint’s perspective as it goes from being about a couple in love, to a fan obsessed with Ed Sheeran. The video uses a lot of static shots and shots that seem like they are handheld due to the camera shaking a lot. There are a lot of cuts in the video and they match the beat of the song and the cuts get even more frequent once the true nature of the video is revealed to show the rapid and crazy mind of the main character. The whole idea of getting a famous actor to portray the main character in the music video is a clever way of using star power to gain attention to the video. At the time Sheeran was an up and coming artist and by using Rupert Grint’s image it was a very good way of attracting more people to the video as word spread by mouth and the internet. A very common theme in Sheeran’s videos is that he hardly ever appears until the very end which is also apparent in this video as when Grint is being escorted out of the building he passes Sheeran and Grint awkwardly stares at Ed as he cannot believe he has met his idol. The use of the reverse shot is good as it shows how the two handle the situation, Ed thinks that Grint is very change and his facial expression shows this, whilst Grint cannot help but stare at his idol. One final thing I noted was the idea of looking being heavily apparent in the video. Grint looks in the mirror a lot and this is used to symbolise his confusion and feeling like he wants to be someone else and is unhappy at who he is and what he looks like. This is shown to be a big part of the video and this also helps confuse the audience until the big reveal when we see the more psychotic side of the character and realise he is not playing Sheeran.

Ed Sheeran – Lego House Video Analysis

The music video is based on the fact that the singer once claimed that he looked like Ron Weasley

from Harry Potter played by Rupert Grint. The genre of the song is indie pop because of the pop

hooks used within the tune of the song as well as the use of pale colours within the video. This helps

make the video seem less glamourous and less exaggerated, which is an idea of realism.

The song is amplified through its video. When just listening to the song without seeing the video it

seems as though it is written about a couple where Ed is singing to his partner about how much he

loves her, however the video completely contradicts that by making it about Rupert Grint and Ed

Sheeran. During the first half of the video it seems as though it is a meant to be humorous as it

seems like Rupert is meant to be portraying Ed because they are both ginger. However halfway

through the video we discover that Grint is actually playing a character who is obsessed with Ed

Sheeran, even going as far as going on stage as though he is Sheeran himself. This changes the

meaning of the song as it is now clear that in the video is written from Grint’s perspective as it goes

from being about a couple in love, to a fan obsessed with Ed Sheeran.

The video uses a lot of static shots and shots that seem like they are handheld due to the camera

shaking a lot. There are a lot of cuts in the video and they match the beat of the song and the cuts

get even more frequent once the true nature of the video is revealed to show the rapid and crazy

mind of the main character.

The whole idea of getting a famous actor to portray the main character in the music video is a clever

way of using star power to gain attention to the video. At the time Sheeran was an up and coming

artist and by using Rupert Grint’s image it was a very good way of attracting more people to the

video as word spread by mouth and the internet.

A very common theme in Sheeran’s videos is that he hardly ever appears until the very end which is

also apparent in this video as when Grint is being escorted out of the building he passes Sheeran and

Grint awkwardly stares at Ed as he cannot believe he has met his idol. The use of the reverse shot is

good as it shows how the two handle the situation, Ed thinks that Grint is very change and his facial

expression shows this, whilst Grint cannot help but stare at his idol.

One final thing I noted was the idea of looking being heavily apparent in the video. Grint looks in the

mirror a lot and this is used to symbolise his confusion and feeling like he wants to be someone else

and is unhappy at who he is and what he looks like. This is shown to be a big part of the video and

this also helps confuse the audience until the big reveal when we see the more psychotic side of the

character and realise he is not playing Sheeran.
