Welcome to the 2021–2022 Season

Message from the Artistic Director, Dean O’Brien

Welcome Chamber Music Enthusiasts!Calgary Pro Musica is proud to welcome you to our 46th season! After a year of such uncertainty, it is a thrill to once again be sharing the finest chamber ensembles live with our Calgary audiences in the beautiful Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. We have an exciting series of ensembles from around the world and a special event concert (with a special ticket price as well) by the Paris-based Modigliani String Quartet in November. Other highlights include the Calgary debut of the Manhattan Chamber Players and a global tour of dance music with Canadian violin sensation, Lara St. John. We are thankful for the loyal support of our many subscribers and sponsors who make this all possible.

Our subscription series will begin in January with a slightly reduced schedule (3 Masters Series concerts and 2 Horizons Series concerts). All concerts will be simultaneously live-streamed in 2021–22 for those who would prefer to experience our concerts from home. In-person concerts will be available for fully vaccinated patrons only; live-stream concerts will be available for all patrons. CPM will be continuously monitoring the COVID-19 situation and conferring with the University of Calgary and with Alberta Health. Safety measures like masks will be required to attend in-person, and if any additional COVID-19 procedures are required to attend, we will give patrons ample advance notice.

As a board, we take great pride in our educational outreach. The Dick Matthews Young Artists Development Program starts its thirteenth season this year, and we are thrilled also to continue our Family Concert collaborations with the phenomenal Green Fools Theatre. With your support, we continue to enhance Calgary as an important Canadian cultural centre and to help develop the next great generation of Canadian musicians.

Enjoy!

Masters Series 1St. Lawrence String QuartetCelebrate the return of the Masters Series with a “Dance Party” program

“Modern…dramatic…superb…wickedly attentive…with a hint of rock 'n roll energy…” are just a few ways critics describe the musical phenomenon that is the St. Lawrence String Quartet. The SLSQ is renowned for the intensity of its performances, its breadth of repertoire, and its commitment to concert experiences that are at once intellectually exciting and emotionally alive. Established in Toronto in 1989, SLSQ quickly earned acclaim at top international chamber music com-petitions and was soon playing hundreds of concerts per year worldwide. It established an ongoing residency at Spoleto Festival USA, made prize-winning recordings for EMI of music by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Golijov, earning two Grammy nominations and a host of other prizes before being appointed ensemble-in-residence at Stanford University in 1998.

In its home town of New York, the ensemble serves as Season Artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, where it has recently performed quartet cycles of Beethoven and Zemlinsky. TALMON HERTZ LEGACY SERIES CHAMBER MUSIC PERFORMANCE CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

TALMON HERTZ LEGACY SERIES FAMILY CONCERT

“Hexagon – the story of a bee who saves a world”High Up in the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal, Apolla the Mountain Butterfly tells the tale of how global warming has wreaked havoc in the mountains, and flowers are dying. In order to save HEXAGON from collapse, honeybees need help. Tupelo, a naïve young bum-blebee, is a “big bee,” even by bum-blebee standards. She wanders away from home and learns how it feels to be bullied and ostracized when she stumbles upon HEXAGON, seeks ref-uge, and is rejected by the honeybees, who run the hive. But Tupelo puts her own pain aside and rallies the bumbles to help the honeys. She learns how compassion always overcomes fear if you lead with love.

The Talmon Hertz Legacy series of performance classes and workshops has given hundreds of Alberta’s promising young artists the opportunity to perform for our visiting artists. Classes are free to participants and auditors and the public is encouraged to attend. We

WHAT IS CHAMBER MUSIC?

SUPPORT CHAMBER MUSIC

Chamber Music is the most communicative and intimate form of music—written for a small group of musicians (2–8 members)—with one performer to a part and generally without conductor. Our concert series offer chamber music in a broader sense, spanning combinations of ensembles including strings, piano, wind instruments, voice and chamber orchestras. Our programming represents the music of many eras from the Baroque masters and earlier, to compositions of the 20th and 21st centuries.

We need your support! To learn more about how you can support Calgary Pro Musica, please contact us at:
