Concert 3Simon Tedeschi returns to St Ives with John Bell AO OBESunday 22 July 2018 at 2:30pm

Our regular “resident” extraordinary pianist Simon Tedeschi returns to St Ives with John Bell AO OBE, founder of Bell Shakespeare and one of Australia’s National Living Treasures, with a deeply moving performance of Lord Alfred Tennyson’s classic 1864 poem ENOCH ARDEN set to music by German Romantic composer, Richard Strauss.Told through spoken word and piano, this timeless tale of love, loss and redemption follows the story of three childhood friends, Enoch Arden, Philip Ray, and Annie Lee. Enoch and Annie marry and start a family, but after Enoch is shipwrecked on an island for ten years, he returns home to find his soulmate Annie remarried to his best friend Philip, finally believing her first husband to be dead. Enoch is faced with the excruciating dilemma to announce his return or sacrifice his own happiness for Annie Lee’s, in what Tedeschi describes as “A tragic, tempestuous, romantic tale accompanied by music of genius. Half chamber music, half theatre.”Following an acclaimed national tour and recording in 2017, Tedeschi and Bell’s collaboration has been described as “formidable”, “enrapturing”, and “gripping”.This is an experience not to be missed.
