The second Dumfries Music Conference will pick up where Greg Wilson signed off last year, with a programme centred on sharing knowledge, ideas and thoughts about music.

The organisers aim is to be progressive, which is why this year’s sessions have a different complexion than last year’s. Where 2012’s focus was electronic music and technology, 2013 is about shining a light on the music industry’s storytellers.

Events kick off with a screening of LCD Soundsystem’s 'Shut Up and Play the Hits' and end with a record fair - hosted by DJ and producer Rebecca Vasmant. Document Records owner Gary Atkinson will share his fascinating story and New Found Sound’s Derick MacKinnon heads up a Born To Be Wide panel of industry experts that includes Keren McKean (former Snow Patrol Manager), Jason Cranwell and Sarah McMullan (The Pop Cop), and Chris Cusack (Booker, Bar Bloc, Glasgow).

There's also the Music Plus Song Writing Workshops from Finding Albert’s Robert Shields and Findlay Napier of the Bar Room Mountaineers fame. And live music from Dumfries’s very own talented troubadours, Barstow Bats, Glasgow hip-hop sensation Hector Bizerk and the wonderfully talented Honeyblood.

As ever, these sessions are about you the musician and what you can get out of them. If you make it along then make sure to get involved on whatever level you’re comfortable with and always feel free to ask questions!

One of the key events of the week is presented by music industry seminar experts Born To Be Wide on the subject 'Getting Started in Music'.

This is on 31 October at 8pm in The Stove Building. Tickets are FREE and limited so it's highly recommended you book in advance to avoid disappointment!

This informative discussion will provide an overview describing how musicians and those interested in music can get started and avoid some common mistakes. Audience members will hear from a variety of music industry professionals, learning useful tips to help steer them in the right direction. Topics covered include:

MUSIC JOURNALISM / PRESS BOOKING GIGS / ORGANISING YOUR OWN: MUSIC MANAGEMENT

Participating speakers include: Keren McKean (former Snow Patrol Manager), Jason Cranwell and Sarah McMullan (The Pop Cop) Derick Mackinnon (Born To Be Wide / The Scotsman), Chris Cusack (Booker, Bar Bloc, Glasgow)

The whole evening will be rounded off with DJ sets from the Born To Be Wide seminar speakers, who will play some of their favourite music.

With six weeks to go until the 15th annual Scottish Music Awards, five of Scotland’s top selling artists are vying to win a brand new Tartan Clef Award – the 'Fan's Choice'.

In a first for the prestigious Awards, the winner will be voted for by you and given to the most popular Scottish artist from a shortlist of the biggest selling Scottish acts of the last 12 months: Emeli Sandé, Biffy Clyro, Texas, Susan Boyle and Calvin Harris.

The star studded ceremony is a celebration of the massive strength and huge diversity of Scotland’s internationally successful and renowned music industry. It is also the biggest single source of funding for the charity, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland.

Voters will be entered into a prize draw to win two tickets to join the stars at the Scottish Music Awards 2013 at the Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow on Saturday 23 November, courtesy of the Sunday Mail.

With past winners and live performers including Paolo Nutini, Wet Wet Wet,

Eddi Reader, Franz Ferdinand, Deacon Blue, Frightened Rabbit, The Fratellis, Mott The Hoople, Big Country, Amy MacDonald as well as Fan's Choice nominees Emeli Sandé, Biffy Clyro and Texas, The Scottish Music Awards is an evening of outstanding entertainment all for a good cause.

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland helps improve the quality of life for children and adults who have been isolated by disability, trauma or illness, and the Scottish Music Awards is the main source of funding for the registered charity, which needs to raise £500,000 every year to operate. Every note raised in Scotland, stays in Scotland.

It is grounded in the belief that everyone can respond to music, no matter how ill or disabled. The unique qualities of music as therapy can enhance communication, support change, and enable people to live more resourcefully and creatively.

The shortlist comprises the 5 Scottish artists who have sold the most albums in the UK from Oct 1 2012 to Sept 30 2013, based on data from more than 6,500 stores compiled by the Official Charts Company - which also compiles the UK's Official Charts as well as the Official Scottish Albums Charts. To vote for your favourite Scottish act, go to www.nordoffrobbinsscotland.org.uk/vote and make your choice. Voting closes at midnight on 14 November.

the mns collection …. Stars shine for city’s first classical music photography exhibition

View all the MNS digital publications from links at

www.musicnewsscotland.wordpress.com

The first exhibition of photography capturing historic visits to Glasgow of some of the most important figures in classical music history is on view now at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Thirty images sourced from The Herald and Times’ photo archive have been digitally restored, and will be exhibited in the Island Bar Foyer for the hall’s patrons and visitors to enjoy. Throughout the 20th Century, Glasgow played host to an astounding range of classical music greats – from Bartok to Britten; Rubinstein to Rostropovich. Indeed, the St Andrew’s Hall, now part of the Mitchell Library, should have had a Hollywood-style pavement outside since so many stars appeared on its stage: many of the most important figures in the pre-war music world gave recitals there as part of an International Celebrity Concert series that reads like a Who’s Who of classical music history. On hand for all of these visits were photographers from sister newspapers the Glasgow Herald, the Evening Times and The Bulletin – and, since the publicity machines weren’t what they are today, in some instances the only record of these visits is a photo and a concert review; interviews didn’t always take place. The photographs didn’t always make the newspaper either, and many of those which did have never been seen in their entirety since they were first published. The photographs in this exhibition also document Glasgow’s rich history as a favoured stop on concert tours as well as its status as a place where there was such passion for the music that local enthusiasts – such as the members of the Milngavie Music Club and those of The Active Society for the Propagation of Contemporary Music - boldly organised their own events, bringing the likes of Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears and Bela Bartok to the city under their own steam. The exhibition covers over 100 years’ worth of the city’s cultural history, from the Scottish Orchestra (now Royal Scottish National Orchestra) posing at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901 with a young Gustav Holst - at the time a trombonist with the Orchestra - situated in the back row, to Hungarian composer Béla Bartók at Glasgow Queen Street Station, and West Side Story

creator Leonard Bernstein arriving in Scotland for Scottish Opera’s 1988 performance of a revised version of his operetta Candide. On public display for the first time is a rare image of Sergei Rachmaninov; five of the greatest tenors of the last century (Beniamino Gigli, Richard Tauber, Sir Peter Pears, Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras); and, in the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth, a picture of Benjamin Britten visiting the Milngavie Music Society in 1953. 1990 - which many of today's concert-goers will still remember - is reflected in two pictures (Luciano Pavarotti and Jessye Norman). Some of the pictures in the exhibition will not have been seen since they were first published in The Herald, Glasgow Evening Times or The Bulletin, while others have never been published. Alison Kerr, who was responsible for curating the exhibition, is also the driving force behind two successful City Of Stars Exhibitions – featuring images of Hollywood and popular music stars in Glasgow - in the venue’s café bar. The current exhibition has been on display since May. Alison Kerr: "I'm delighted to have been able to raid the Herald's fabulous photo archive for this exhibition, and to be involved in celebrating the city's colourful and rich classical music history. I was thrilled to discover years ago that Rachmaninov had been ‘papped’ at Queen Street Station - that photo led to the idea of investigating the visits to Glasgow by classical stars, many of whom were treated in the same way as a pop star might be today. This new exhibition will hopefully stir memories in seasoned concert-goers and provide some surprises too." Alison continued: "We hope that Classical City of Stars will trigger memories of concert experiences – and provide some insight into the concert life of Glasgow in the days when you might have spent an evening not only listening to, but watching, Rachmaninov play the piano." Of course, one vein that runs through the exhibition is the Royal Scottish National Orchestra – www.rsno.org.uk - in its various incarnations, starting with the Scottish Orchestra in our oldest photograph and running up to the late 20th Century when it added to its achievements a string of definitive recordings of Hollywood’s finest film music, and attracted two of the greatest composers in the genre to Glasgow.

Copies of the prints are available to buy from The Herald and Times Group @ http://glasgowheraldandtimes.newsprints.co.uk/

Locust Honey String Band, girls to tour Scotland

Scottish Tour : 3-7 November : www.brookfield-knights.com/up-coming-tours.html

One of Brookfield-Knights roots music agency's most outstanding performers – The Locust Honey String Band are heading our way for dates in November to help round off 2013 in style. Hailing from the very heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with its rich roots-of-country/bluegrass/Appalachian old-time tradition, The Locust Honey String Band, out of Swannanoa, are tipped by many to fill the gap left behind when all-girl tradsters Uncle Earl stopped touring. The band’s debut CD, attracted widespread praise when it got its UK and Ireland release at the start of 2013. The girls kick up a storm that is guaranteed to keep both the old-timers and younger fans happy, injecting gorgeous nuggets from the past with a vibrantly earthy spirit which sparkles with feel-good freshness, while seamlessly blending in self-penned compositions. Reviewing the album for AmericanRootsUK, Mike Morrison said: “The real Appalachian feel that they seem to bring to everything they do is one that calls up those legendary far off days of the late 1920s when ‘Hillbilly’ music took off. There is a really authentic front porch feel to everything on this outstanding album” World music presenter, Max Reinhardt, who hosts The Late Junction show at BBC Radio 3, told listeners they were “taking the tradition into the new century.” Scottish tour dates include Biggar Corn Exchange on Sunday, November 3, Glenbuchat Hall in Aberdeenshire (4th), The Steeple Hall, Kilbarchan (5th), a House Concert in Edinburgh on the 6th and the Acoustic Music Club in Kirkcaldy (7th). www.locusthoney.com

Michael Garrett "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

Born in Leicestershire in 1944 and now lives and works in Edinburgh, Michael has been composing and performing as a pianist since the age of 12 and his works encompass a wide range of styles. He has written symphonic, chamber, instrumental and vocal music and has contributed extensively to the literature of the piano. Since his early compositional experiments in the 1960s, using serial techniques, he has traversed into a more cheerful and melodic sphere incorporating Jazz and 'Rock' elements. From the 1980s he has embraced a highly developed 'European' style with respect for traditional forms. His main inspirations have evolved from nature and the night. In summation: “His art is that of music to enable one to forget.” In 2008 Michael had the first performance of his Epithalamion I for organ by Elizabeth Day at St.Giles Cathedral and also the first perfomance of his Symphony No.12 given by the New Edinburgh Orchestra under Tim Paxton at the Methodist Church, Nicolson Square, Edinburgh

BATTLEFIELD BAND TO PLAY MUSSELBURGH, GLASGOW AND SAUGHTON PRISON! Busy as ever, Battlefield Band are following up the release of their Room Enough For All’ album, and an eighteen date tour in the USA, with two Scottish ‘home ground’ shows in Musselburgh and Glasgow, before flying out to Australia for a tour in November. In addition to the public concerts at The Brunton Theatre and Òran Mór, the group will also be performing for the inmates at Saughton Prison (HMP Edinburgh) with a daytime show on the 24 October.

The band always love playing back in Scotland, and Fiddler Alasdair White, who hails from the Isle of Lewis, says “it’ll be great to be back home for these Scottish shows after a little ‘warm-up’ tour in the USA! The prison performance is something we’ve done once before, back in 2005. We had a great response then and we felt that it’s a really worthwhile and rewarding thing to do again, for everyone involved.”

Originally founded in 1969 and named after the ‘Battlefield’ area of Glasgow, the band have been an everevolving bedrock of talent for over four decades. Their latest album ‘Room Enough For All’ - overseen by longtime producer & Boys of The Lough founder member Robin Morton - captures one of Scotland’s flagship bands at the top of their game and illustrates yet again that they are among the most relevant contemporary composers in their genre today. The ever-fiery instrumental dynamic, with bagpipes and fiddles to the fore, exhibits the intuitive interplay and understanding between world class traditional musicians, while their songs of social history, plaintive ballads and songs from the Scots Gaelic tradition are as powerful, relevant and moving as ever.

LORNA REID : album - Falling Like Dew release date 23 October : www.lornareid.com

After the critically acclaimed “BANN” comes the wonderful album Ùrlar, the fourth instalment from current “Scottish Trad Music Award’s Folk Band of the Year”, Breabach. In June 2013 the band toured Scotland and visited each of their five hometowns for a very special night of music. During the visits, the band was able to meet with local tradition bearers, friends and family to source songs and melodies for this release. Ùrlar is centred firmly around community and is undoubtedly the bands most diverse undertaking which has gained further inspiration and direction under the production of multi-instrumentalist and award-winning singer Kris Drever (Lau) As their “hometown” tour inspired this album, the combination of both, has, in turn, inspired Breabach to undertake a full UK tour, during October and November. Breabach harbours the multiple talents of: Calum Maccrimmon, Ewan Robertson, James Duncan Mackenzie, Megan Henderson and James Lindsay. http://breabach.com/ https://twitter.com/breabach www.facebook.com/Breabach

‘Falling Like Dew’ is a new jazz-pop ‘cross-over’ album of original material, self-penned by Edinburgh born singer Lorna Reid. The release party is on Wednesday 23 October at the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh. Pre-release copies of the album have been received with acclaim including a listing on BBC Radio Scotland’s Jazz House. The upmarket store Harvey Nichols, Edinburgh will be stocking the album in their stylish 4th Floor Restaurant where Lorna is a regular performer. Reid has also been offered a distribution deal with a leading London record label, in 2014. Twice nominated for Best Vocalist (Scottish Jazz Awards 2011 & 2013), this is Reid’s first album of new work and follows her successful, debut album of jazz standards ‘Gypsy In My Soul’ in 2008. Reid has spent 10 years building a reputation as one of Scotland’s leading jazz singers. Also known for her bluesy feel and intimate vocal style, she has played packed houses, at top London venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club (Soho). ‘Falling Like Dew’ (a line from Lord Byron’s Don Juan) is an album of 12 original songs, rooted in a jazz style and with notes of genres pop, blues, country and soul. Music and lyrics were written by Reid. She then worked with two of Scotland’s leading musicians and arrangers Graeme Stephen (guitarist) and Euan Stevenson (pianist), on various tracks, to develop a distinct style and feel for each track. Each track has a distinct style and feel. From the sultry tango beats of Doggone Good to the rocking chorus of Time, haunting lament Girl In the Coat to the laid-back country sounds of Too Busy, Falling Like Dew has been created with a strong lyrical content and beautiful instrumentation, from some of Scotland’s finest musicians. Described by Reid as a ‘collection written from the heart’. Each song is unique and crafted. The work is the result of her years of playing and listening to a diverse range of music and artists including Diana Krall, Nora Jones, Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald, Leonard Cohen, Madeleine Peyroux, Bonnie Raitt and Tom Waits, to name but a few. Whilst Falling Like Dew is an eclectic album, Reid’s love of jazz is present

throughout the writing in terms of structure, approach and also in her selection of musicians who are in the main jazz musicians. Graeme Stephen (guitar), Euan Stevenson (piano) Ed Kelly (bass) Dave Swanson (drums) Seonaid Aitken (violin) and Paul Manson (electric bass). All the tracks were recorded by David Gray in The Sound Café, Penicuik and produced by Lorna and David Gray. ‘Falling Like Dew’ was supported by Creative Scotland.

TWELFTH DAY Speak From The Start ep : cd / download Release Date: 8 December Speak From The Start is an EP of cover songs by Scottish fiddle, harp and vocal duo Twelfth Day. The duo were inspired to create Speak From The Start after BBC Radio Manchester asked them to cover You’re The One For Me Fatty by Morrissey as part of their 40th birthday celebrations. Having enjoyed the process of covering a song completely different from their own musical style, Twelfth Day went on to rework tracks by Kanye West, Blondie, Passion Pit and Twin Atlantic. They produced this collection of five captivating songs, which whilst staying true to their original versions, have become something completely different, enticing the listener through the unique sound of Twelfth Day. MICK WEST & MULDOON'S PICNIC A Scots Chorus Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Scots Chorus is a joint venture between veteran Scots singer Mick West and the fantastic a cappella group Muldoon's Picnic. In mid 2012, West and Muldoon's started exploring the different harmonic possibilities of a body of the most interesting and representative Scots chorus songs they could find and, having decided that some of these songs would benefit from instrumental arrangements too, asked well known arrangers Frank McLaughlin and Stewart Hardy to arrange, manage and perform on the project. It is hoped that the CD and booklet will not only be enjoyable in their own right, but also provide a portal for those who wish to explore the great Scots song repertoire further, and be a motivation and inspiration for all singers and musicians to take this materiel and develop to use it to make their own music. COREEN SCOTT Beyond The Sea Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now 'Beyond The Sea is the new album from Scottish singer Coreen Scott. Singing in French, English and Portuguese, the album is a collection of songs from around the world. From the haunting melodies of Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes and Tom Wait's The Briar and the Rose to the thought-provoking lyrics of Weeping and the deceptively jaunty sound of Je ne veux pas travailler, Coreen’s voice soars above the beautiful instrumental melodies and tight-knit harmonies – there is something for everyone on this CD, including lovely interpretations of such classics as the Dylan's To Make You Feel My Love, Piaf’s La vie en rose, and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird, but also the more rhythmic South African Weeping, the Portuguese Manha de carnival and the lovely French La mer. CEILIDHCATU NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. STEPHEN LEE 4 Orchestral Pieces Album : cd Release Date: Out Now 4 Orchestral Pieces is a body of work composed by Stephen Lee.
