What is MUSIC ?

A partnership of European cities and research institutes thattakes the lead in innovative CO2 reduction!

MUSICI is an INTERREG IVB NWE project of 5 European cities

(Rotterdam, Ghent, Aberdeen, Montreuil, Ludwigsburg)supported by 2 research institutes (DRIFT & Tudor);

I aims at reducing CO2 emissions in urban areas by 50% by2030 and beyond;

I involves urban citizens via Transition Management;

I adds energy as an additional GIS layer to spatial and urbanplanning;

I develops innovative strategies by combining TransitionManagement and GIS technologies in urban planning.

Why MUSIC ?

I Substantial CO2 reduction until 2030 and beyond required,

I industries are preparing for energy transition,

I business model: You can earn money with it,

I nations are in energy transition,

I rising prices of energy (energy poverty),

I local opportunities for jobs,

I sustainable architecture as an asset,

I many separate projects exist ready for implementation, e.g.solar cadastres, emission scenarios, business development,architectural and planning projects, transition movements.

⇒ We need to speed and scale up!

What would cities need to know?

The MUSIC cities dive into questions, such as:

I how to create a common understanding of problems andpotentials for change?

I how to mobilise different types of actors and renewable energypotentials to work towards a sustainable future?

I how to get support within your organization for an innovativeapproach to reduce CO2 emissions?

I how to use decision support tools for a participatory planningprocess?

I how to estimate and localise renewable energy potentials todevelop adequate policies and business opportunities?

I Business opportunities, i.e. energy, construction sector, . . .

I Citizen potentials → front runners with innovative ideas

I ICT tools

I Scientific methods and models

I The WWW

What are the objectives of MUSIC?

1. Institutional innovations: carbon reductive /energy governancewith a stakeholder based vision via transition management.

2. Technical innovations: Geospatial Urban Energy informationand decision Support System (iGUESS) for scenario analysisand decision support across different scales.

3. Implement and assess “learning by doing” pilots.

The MUSIC approachTransition management

I develop action plans for energy reduction with a multi-stakeholderapproach,

I take front runners as examples to follow.

Geospatial Urban Energy Decision Support System – iGUESS

I integrate energy as a geospatial layer in urban planning at building,district and city level,

I develop a geospatial urban energy information and support system.

Pilots

I increase the impact of technical and organizational measures in thefield of energy reduction in cities,

I test innovative methodologies and tools developed in the project inconcrete pilots.

Let’s look at some concrete Examples

Meet the Cities of Ghent and Rotterdam.

Let’s seeI what Ghent’s experience is involving citizens, local actors to

reduce emissions and adapt to climate change.

I how Rotterdam is finding solutions for a more sustainablefuture.
