BERLIN - In what is believed to be afirst for radio, Berlin's RTL 104.6 andGerman indie label Triple M havejoined forces to find and construct apop band on -air.

Following the Europe -wide success ofthe Popstars TV phenomenon, the CHRstation has been auditioning hopefuls toform an all -girl trio with a view torepeating via radio the commercial suc-cess enjoyed by TV discoveries Hear'Say(UK), Bros'Sis (Germany) Excellence(Sweden) and Bardot (Australia).

"Auditions have become very popu-lar lately-they show that the dreamof becoming a pop star is not thatunattainable," says 104.6 RTL's pro-

gramme director Arno Muller. "It hasbecome a trend now."

After the station invited candidatesto auditions, 30 singers were selectedfrom the 300 or so who responded, andlisteners got to vote on the last five con-testants who were each showcased onthe breakfast show from February 18-22. The project is being carried out inconjunction with Berlin -based label andproduction company Triple M, who willform the jury alongside a choreograph-er. The new group was set to beunveiled on air on February 25.

Dido took home theawards for Best BritishFemale and Best BritishAlbum in recognition ofthe UK's best-sellingalbum of 2001, No Angel,while the AustralianMinogue mirrored Didowith the same awards inthe international section.Completing a hat -trick for BMG, RCA'sWestlife took the award for Best PopAct. "To win three Brit Awards thisyear is a fantastic achievement and atestament to our great artists and theBMG UK team," says BMG UK/Irelandchairman Hasse Breitholtz.

EMI, however, turned in the bestcompany performance with no lessthan four awards. In addition toMinogue, Robbie Williams was namedBest British Male for a third time,while Innocent act Blue won BestBritish Newcomer to beat off acts asdiverse as Turin Brakes, Elbow,Atomic Kitten and Gorillaz. As withWildstar's Craig David last year,Gorillaz failed to pick up a singleaward, despite being nominated in sixcategories.

Independent labels were well repre-sented on the winner's podium. Fourindie-signed acts picked up awards, asopposed to just one last year. Theywere The Strokes (Rough Trade), SoSolid Crew (Relentless), Travis (Inde-pendiente) and Basement Jaxx(XL/Beggars Banquet).

Radio stations as the ultimate A&R forum?With all the popular excitement-and press cover-

age-surrounding the Popstars, Star Academy, Opera-tion Triunfo and other Pop Idol TV shows, radio was soonto make a foray into the world of talent scouting.

Last week, Berlin well -established station 104.6 RTL,jumped on the bandwagon and launched the first-butprobably not the last-casting for aspiring talent.

That radio stations get associated with new talentspotting is not a novelty. The BBC DJ John Peel pro-vided a much sought-after window to up-and-comingacts in his shows by playing demo tapes of unsignedacts. Many stations around Europe have organised tal-ent contests that were as many platforms for newartists to find exposure.

But this RTL project-as described in our front pagestory-is slightly different in that the radio station hasinitiated the whole scheme and is involved at all levels ofthe project, from the search and casting of the act, to thechoice of songs, the looks of the act, the marketing and

promotion, all this in partnership with a local label. Atthe end of the process, the station will have a group thatit could claim as its own, will have created a huge buzzwith its listeners, and will most certainly benefit frominches of press coverage.

That is, if all goes according to plan. There are somerisks in such a creative venture: talent might not live upto the promoters of the project's expectations; listenerscould turn their back on the whole experience; and thestation might end up with artists it is committed to andto whom will have to give airplay, no matter what.

The other side of the coin is that an act branded as astation's discovery might alienate other stations-whywould they play a song from an act if they know that inthe end all they do is give credit to their competitor andcontribute to its bottom line.

Stations also enter into somemurky waters when they want apiece of the creative process. Like forradio station's labels, you also haveto look at the competitive aspect, andrecord companies could very wellclaim that radio stations are twistingthe rules of competition by providinga whole package to artists, from theproduction process to airplay.

Music views sought on AM's futureby Jon Heasman

LONDON - The Radio Authority (RA)is soliciting opinions from the musicbusiness and other interestedparties on what the futureholds for medium -wave AMbroadcasting in the UK.

"Essentially, what we'resaying is that what happensto AM is almost like a dinnerparty game," says the RA'shead of programming andadvertising, Martin Campbell. "Thereare all sorts of possibilities. Now is thetime for all these ideas to come to us."

In addition to the mainly speech -driven AM services from public broad-caster the BBC, there are 61 commer-cial stations currently broadcasting onAM in the UK, two of which are nation-

al (Virgin 1215 and Talk Sport). Some31 of the local AM stations are Gold -formatted services belonging to quasi -national networks. There are also a

significant number of ethnicminority stations, such asLondon Asian station SunriseRadio, broadcasting on AM.

Among the topics up fordebate will be what types offormats work best on AM;whether there should there belighter touch regulation of the

AM band (including direct, same -for-mat competition permitted betweenstations); how much networking (ifany) should be allowed; or whether thewaveband should be turned over tonon-commercial community radio pro-jects.

Campbell promises that all propos-

als for the future of AM will be lookedat, however radical they may be. "Forexample, if anyone's sitting therethinking why isn't AM used to show-case new music-not necessarily agreat commercial proposition, butmusic you're not going to hear else-

The Capital Radio group hasacquired Manchester AM station Big1458 AM from The Wireless Group for£250,000. The AOR station will be re -branded to become part of the CapitalGold network, and Capital also getsBig's Manchester digital radio licence.

Cardigan -free Persson tops Swedish Grammisby Johan Lindstrom

STOCKHOLM - Nina Persson's solo pro-ject A Camp was the big winner at thisyear's Swedish Grammis awardceremony, held at the Globenarena in Stockholm on Febru-ary 14 in front of an audience ofaround 9,000.

The album A Camp (Stock-holm Records) was voted AlbumOf The Year, and also garneredCardigans lead singer Perssonthe Best Female Pop/RockArtist, Best Lyricist and Best Compos-er awards. Swedish -language rap actFattaru (Virgin) won two awards, forNewcomer Of The Year and Best Hip-Hop/Soul Act, while The Soundtrack OfOur Lives (Warner Music) were namedArtist Of The Year.

Grammis organiser Nutta Hultmanwas generally satisfied with the out-come of the show, which was broadcastlive on Sweden's biggest televisionchannel TV4.

"We worked with a new productioncompany [Efti], which gave the televi-sion broadcast a faster and morehumorous approach," she says. "To do

a big public show like thisand to use the Globen arenawas also something new [...]although I'm sure that a lotof people in the businessliked the smaller and moreintimate awards that we hadbefore."

This year's Grammis hadbeen criticised for not reflect-

ing public taste. Artists E -Type andMarkoolio arranged an alternativeaward ceremony in the same week asthe Grammis, in protest against whatthey regarded as the neglect of pop-ulist artists like themselves.

"Of course we must listen to thecriticism," says Hultman. "It will beon the agenda at the evaluation meet-ing in which we will discuss ways toimprove the awards for next year. TheGrammis isn't a static thing-it mustmove with the changes in the businessas a whole."

BERLIN - Universal MusicGermany is implementinga series of structuralchanges under its chair-man/CEO Tim Renner, fol-lowing its acquisition of theEuropean recorded musicand music publishing oper-ations of the Koch Group.

Tom Bohne, formerlydirector of the Zeitgeistlabel with responsibilitiesfor Polydor's internationalrepertoire, has been namedmanaging director of Poly-dor, taking over the posi-tion previously held by vet-eren executive Jorg Hellwigwho will leave the companyin the coming weeks. Poly-dor will be converted into apop division, and is hand-ing its schlager and Ger-man folk music artists overto Munich -based KochMusic, which specialises inthose genres, as well asclassical.

now MD of Universal Clas-sics, Jazz and FamilyEntertainment, has beendivested of his position andis expected to exit the com-pany.

Local repertoire turns on Russian listenersby Aleksey Kruzin

Moscow - The rise in pop-ularity of local repertoirehas changed the face ofradio listening in Russiaover the past year.

According to the latestfigures published by Inter -Media, calculated as dailyaverage quarter-hourshare, Russian -languagemusic station RusskoyeRadio retains its dominantposition as the country'smost listened -to broadcast-er, with a 12.1% share ofthe market.

In second place, accord-ing to the survey which cov-ers January 2002 andexcludes cable networks, islocal repertoire Gold sta-tion Radio MV, whichrecorded a massive leapfrom its April 2001 share of1.7% to register 9.9% in thelatest sweep. Radio MV's

phenomenal success haspushed the internationalrepertoire -oriented EuropaPlus down into third placewith a 9.6% share.

In fourth place is anoth-er station which has bene-fitted from the increased

popularity of Russianmusic, Radio Shanson,which recorded a share of4.6% when it launched inmid -2000 and now accountsfor 8.4% of the market.

The penchant for domes-tic music among Russians isalso reflected in the 5.1%share recorded by the full -

service Russkoye Radio 2,which takes its music from"the treasure chest of Sovietand Russian popularmusic."

Sergey Arkhipo (pic-tured), president of RussianMedia Group, the owners ofRusskoye Radio, says hethinks the massive populari-ty of Russian music stationswill pass: "When we hit thespot with Russkoye Radio,everybody was listening toit. Now there are three morestations that have positionedthemselves in this market,but I think in about a yearthe interest in this type ofmusic will have subsided."

Other stations showingstrong growth over the pastsix months include AOR sta-tions Avtoradio (7.9% share)and Nashe Radio (6.1%), aswell as Gold outlets RadioRetro (6.1%) and RDV(2.7%).

HILVERSUM - The Dutch Pop Institute (NPI), organ-isers of the Access To Amsterdam (A2A) music con-ference, has announced that the event will not takeplace again this year. NPI decided that there was notenough time to organise the event, originally intend-ed as an annual gathering. Dutch music foundationConamus and Amsterdam venue Paradiso did notparticipate in last year's inaugural event and Cona-mus had to reschedule its own Amsterdam DanceEvent (ADE) for November, in order to avoid a clashwith the A2A. Conamus has now announced it willchange the dates for this year's ADE to October 17,18 and 19.

SPANISH PROMOTERS FORM NEW TRADE GROUPINGMADRID - Spain's independent music promoters haveformed the Association of Music Promoters, in order topromote and improve the country's live music sector.APM brings together 18 of Spain's leading promoters,who represent some 80% of all private music promo-tion activity. The association will address issuesincluding Spain's lack of live music venues, challeng-ing the 10% authors' rights levy on live concerts, andit will lobby for a reduction from 16% to 4% of the VATlevied on concerts. "But in the longer term we want toraise people's general awareness of the value of musicin culture, and of the role of the concert promoter inthat," says Neo Sala, APM president and president ofpromoter Doctor Music Concerts.

MILES LEONARDPROMOTED AT PARLOPHONELONDON - Managing director of Par-lophone, Keith Wozencroft (pictured,left), has promoted Miles Leonard(right) to the position of director ofA&R and head of associated labels,Parlophone. Previously A&R director ofParlophone, Leonard, who was one ofthe key executives behind KylieMinogue's successful Fever album, adds the develop-ment of Parlophone associated labels, including RegalRecords and Credence Records, to his current A&Rresponsibilities. He joined Parlophone in 1996, havingpreviously worked in A&R at Roadrunner Records andat Virgin Records, to whom he signed The Verve.

CADENA COPE PROFITS DOWNMADRID - The Catholic church -owned broadcasterCOPE made profits of euros 3.7 million last year,down 56% on its year 2000 profits. The radio group,Spain's third largest, has share capital of more thaneuros 48 million. An official statement from the net-work blames lower advertising revenues for the fall inprofits, which it said were down more than 10% in thefirst nine months of 2001.

MOVING CHAIRSHILVERSUM - Former M&M editor -in -chief MachgielBakker has joined the Dutch Audiovisual Archive(NAA), a government -funded organisation thatretrieves and archives all major radio and TV broad-casts in the Netherlands. He will be responsible forthe NAA's 15 -strong music department. Bakker lefthis position of MD of PIAS Holland last year after justsix months in the job.LONDON - The UK's Capital Radio group hasappointed non -executive director Peter Mitchell as

Triunfo boosts Spanish salesby Howell Llewellyn

MADRID - Spain's musicmarket enjoyed a last-minute surge last year torecord an unexpected 20%rise in unit sales with a 4%increase in revenues in2001, according to labels'body AFYVE.

The enormous success ofthe new talent music TVshow Operacion Triunfo(M&M, December 15, 2001)has been largely responsi-ble for the jump that has,say some industry insiders,saved Spain's recordedmusic market.

Spain registered unitsales of 73.6 million, withrevenues of 624 million.The contrast in percentageincreases between unitsand value can be explainedby the fact that half of the1.7 million Operacion Tri-

unfo CDs sold by December31 by indie label Vale Musicwere budget -price.

The TV show's double CDlongplayer Album and 11mini -CDs released week -by -week have now shifted some2.5 million units. In theweek ending February 2, 11of the top 19 selling albumswere CDs linked to the show.

Spain's overall CD salesin 2001 were up 28% at 64million, while cassette salesfell 28% to 6.3 million.There was a 41% rise invinyl LP sales to 24,000,and singles also climbed15%, to 2.2 million. Interna-tional repertoire was down7 points at 40.5%-this sec-tor has lost 17.4% of itsmarket share in just twoyears.

Domestic repertoireremained steady at 34.7%,while "various artist" collec-

tions-including those bythe Operacion Triunfo con-testants-rose 6 points to a17.5% market share.

Carlos Grande, AFYVEdirector, says: "If it had notbeen for the exceptionalsales circumstances at thevery end of the year, therevenue value would havebeen down by 2% or 3%."

Another reason for thegrowth in unit sales is thatVale Music became anAFYVE member last year.Vale Music is a leading lightin the thriving Barcelona -based dance compilationsector, whose combinedannual sales are in the mil-lions. Prior to 2001, ValeMusic's sales were not com-puted by AFYVE.

Although AFYVE repre-sents only 19 labels, itclaims to represent morethan 90% of the market.

The case centres aroundnational commercialCHR/talk station RadioNova, which complainedthat Gramex was chargingit approximately 15% morethan local stations becauseit broadcasts nationally.

Kilpailuvirasto reasonsthat, as both local andregional stations in Finlandoperate in the same nation-al advertising market sell-ing airtime, they should allbe charged the same tariffs."Any differences in tariffsshould have an objectivereason, justified by compe-

tition law," says Kilpailuvi-rasto director Kirsi Leivo.

However, Gramex man-aging director Hannu Mart-tila points out that the bodydoes not set its fees inde-pendently. "Gramex doesn't

Radio Nova began broad-casting in 1997 and agreedon its fees in 1999 after pro-tracted negotiations. How-ever, it subsequently decid-ed to terminate its contractwith Gramex the followingyear. After terminating itscontract, Nova began pay-ing fees to the collectionsociety according to whatthe station itself deemedwas reasonable.

"Nova was the first com-mercial station to startbroadcasting with a licencecovering all the regions andin our view we couldn'tapply to Nova the samelocal radio station fees aswe do to local commercialstations," says Marttila.

Gramex has levied vary-ing fees on a number ofregional commercial stationswhich came on air afterNova, including Kiss FM,Radio NRJ, Classic FM andRadio Suomipop.

Kilpailuvirasto's Leivorefuses to be drawn onwhether the row over copy-right fees raises the questionas to whether existing legis-lation is obsolete. "We don'tstate an opinion as to what.would be the correct system,only that the current prac-tice is discriminatory," hesays. The competitionauthority will make a rulingon the case in due course.

ON THE BEATREDUNDANCIES AT SONY ITALY'S S4 LABELMILAN - Sony Music Entertainment Italy's S4 divisionhas laid off four of its 15 employees as part of a re-structuring process. Franco Cabrini (pictured),president and managing director of Sony MusicEntertainment Italy, says S4's Milan offices willprobably be moved to the Sony headquarters inthe centre of the city, but he denies industryrumours that the label is about to close. industry hopes will be a brighter year.2001 was the year everyone wants toforget, but one that will be remem-bered forever. Like the rest of theworld, Danish music producerswatched sales figures shrink while thepirates reaped illicit profits and con-sumers helped themselves to freebies.

Optimistic outlook"I believe the industry has entered2002 with a degree of optimism, and Ireally believe the awards help," saysJesper Bay, MD of MusicMatters, thecompany that organises the annualevent for IFPI. "We kicked off with a

Musical geography lessonsWhile the Nordic countries tend to get lumped into a single mass by theoutside world, each of the nations and their music are distinctly different.Regardless, the region seems to be a favorite target for downsizing andDanish music executives are worried about the trend. Sony recently cen-tralized, BMG did so last year and Edel recently closed offices inScandinavia.

"All this downsizing and the money people taking over is not good, weneed creative people who are the ones who make the hits says Virgin MDHenriette Blix. "It's interesting that the music industry is supposed to bemodern and trendy, but it reacts in an old-fashioned way.

"We have to go through declines by biting the bullet, it's a cyclical busi-ness, and in this case I feel it's the wrong reaction to let a financial monstertake over. No matter how much the suits save on the short term, they won'tbe producing hits on the longer term," he adds.

"It's very worrying. I don't think it's an advantage for Denmark, but anindication of how the world outside views the countr-the Nordic region isviewed as an entity," says Universal MD Jens -Otto Paludan "I see Denmarkas a source of repertoire. Of course the new set ups we've seen have advan-tages for us; in theory it will be easier to find local repertoire, because nowit's us and EMI."

Many executives fear a situation where headquarters see Denmark as aspot to downsize, undermining growth potential as there would be fewerreleases. Iceberg MD Manfred Zahringer believes the trend may cause themajors problems as new artists may be reluctant to attempt to communicateacross borders, while acts in the countries (Sweden being the prime centre)where offices are located will have a clear advantage. "This can strengthenindie's chances of landing new, exciting acts," he says. Former Sony MD JanDegner supports this notion, suggesting "there will be room for new indies".

With the financial superiority of the majors, Zahringer says indies musttake another tack, first of all by organically growing an act. "Sign fewer actsand extend the investment into building them up and developing a career,"he says, emphasizing that the process takes time. "Another possibility is tobe part of the 'food chain'-raise an act/product to a certain level of successand license it to a major that can bring it to the next level.

"An alternative would be to focus on niche areas where competition fromthe majors is not that great."

Last year may have been disap-pointing in terms of sales, but therewere a number of positive signs forthe industry. Music sales from all for-mats declined by 24% to 15.48 millionunits from 20.28 million the previousyear. Total CD album sales declinedby 25% to 12.36 million units, while inmonetary terms sales were down 18%to DKK 803.87 million (euros 108 mil-lion euros).

Upswing begins"We need this upswing. I believewe've hit bottom and anticipate a sta-bilisation this year. Lot's a things arehappening and new bands are break-ing, so I think the public is receptive,"says Michael Ritto, president of EMIRecorded Music Denmark and chair-man of the Danish arm of IFPI.

What brightens last year's pictureis domestic repertoire, whichaccounts for around one -quarter ofsales. While unit sales of internation-al CDs dropped 32%, output of homegrown acts was down by only 8%(units) and 7% (value). The tallieswere buoyed by solid sales of Popstarswinners EyeQ, Kim Larsen (bothEMI) and Sort Sol (Universal), while2001 was the year when Safri Duo(Universal) drummed its way acrossEurope and is in the middle of mas-sive overseas promotion.

"With the Danish Music Awardsnow at "spectacular event" status,and with a new music -video TV pro-gramme, I think we're seeing a newspring blossoming for Danish music,"says Jan Degner, chair of IFPI's DMAcommittee and former MD of Sony."Danish music will boost its share athome, as we see a dramatically grow-ing interest in local acts. I believe wecan recoup in 2002 what we lost lastyear."

Return of rockThe new, big blip on the 2002 screenis rock. Radio has been playing a lotmore rock and concert venues haveseen sell-out crowds, with clubsputting on single acts and largervenues having several names on thebill.

"Things are leaning towards newrock," says Flemming Bauch, purchas-ing manager of the seven -outlet musicchain GUF. "As to this year, some ofthe things we've heard about will sell

and we're seeing it now. Rock and gui-tars are coming back, people areputting guitars into machine music,"says Henrik Sand, music programmerat Radio Viborg. "Take Jupiter Day, aband we're playing a lot-a year agothey probably wouldn't have beenplaylisted."

Key nomineesThe turnaround is fairly apparent inthe DMA nominations as well, withacts such as Saybia, Kitty Wu, SwanLee, Love Shop and vets Sort Solweighing heavily on the list.

IFPI decided three years ago torevamp what were then called theDansk Grammys and divide musicaccording to genre, so now Folk, Jazzand Classical music all hold separateceremonies, but under the commonDanish Music Awards umbrella.

"From a music business perspec-tive, I see two important factors: first,we've managed to create a spectacu-lar pop -rock show with impact on fansand the media-and, it's great we'verecognised the niche genre," saysEMI's Ritto.

"Plus there are two danceawards-independent of, but sanc-tioned by, IFPI-and this illustratesthe broad scope of the music industry."

The specialised DMA events arejust as important in their respectiveareas as the mainstream ceremony.Kick Music's Ester Brohus has beennominated for three folk/countryDMAs. "It's a pat on the back, but also

Previous events often featured ahip -hop act performing onstage witha jazz band and a classical ensemble.In trying to please everybody, theshow itself became diluted. The mainevent is now pop music, an aspectthat grabbed MTV's eye and the sta-tion now carries reports from theevent.

Hip -hop eventAlthough hip -hop is represented, anawards ceremony for this genre willbe launched this year separate fromDMA. "We put out quite a bit of localhip -hop," says Virgin product manag-er Las Thomsen. "The market isn'thuge, but big enough to make itworthwhile."

DMA has telecom group Orange asits main sponsor, and partnershipswith TV2, Yahoo, radio group TheVoice and Gaffa music magazine. Theadditional support has made a biggershow possible.

The awards ceremony switchedvenues several times throughout the1990s, but two years agoMusicMatters booked theCopenhagen Forum-the city'slargest indoor concert arena-and

created a show. And instead of onlyselling seating, a large area in front ofthe stage was reserved for a standingcrowd. The TV camera angles make itlook like a concert, a move reflectedby the atmosphere inside, with morelive international and domestic actsadded to the bill.

"DMA is a means of continuallydrawing attention to the industry andto the domestic and internationalartists, both performers and nomi-nees/winners," Ritto notes. "Theawards mean more to some than theydo to others, but if a band like SwanLee wins it can really boost theircareer."

The lineup for this year's showincludes Kylie Minogue, RonanKeating, Westlife, D -A -D, Sort Sol,Safri Duo, Thomas Helmig, Swan Leeand more than half a dozen otherlocal acts.

Raising standards"As it is with awards in other coun-tries, it gives us a chance to takestock of the year's activities, and seewho's done what. The awards carryprestige," says Universal MD Jens -Otto Paludan.

"DMA has been raised to highstandards. It's one of the largest[awards] in Europe, Forum is a majorvenue and more than one millionviewers watch the show on TV. It'sbecome a media event that's veryimportant for the industry, for theartists and it's a great tool."

The new stars of Danish musicBaal (Virgin)Baal is one of thosebands whose recordsyou own to keep yousatisfied between con-certs. The quintet hitthe scene with a 1996debut Sensorama, andimmediately won thecritics' hearts with itsown brand of dramatic rock.Virgin put them on the road afterthe debut and in support of two morealbums, playing indoor venues andfestivals. Through the years the bandhas carved out a solid fan base, buthas been absent for the past couple ofyears making music for stage andscreen productions.

Now they're back and the label hasBaal at the top of its internationalpriority list, aiming first atScandinavia, then Germany andJapan. A new album, The SupremeMachine, will be released on 1 March."It's a back to basics set, with lots ofguitar and piano work," says Virginproduct manager Las Thomsen. "It's abroader sound, more of everythingand something like the first album,but an expansion of the Baal style."

To capture a genuine rock sound,all tracks were recorded on analogueequipment and frontman BjornFja2stad has never sounded better.The first single toradio in the second week of Februaryand following the launch, the bandwill tour through until November.

Mike Tramp (Kick)Mike Tramp is still rocking. He was amember of Denmark's first boy band,Mable, a group that won the localEurovision Song Contest (with BoomBoom) back in 1978. From there hemoved to the US and formedWhite Lion, to make severalhit records in the nextdecade. The short-livedFreak of Nature was hisnext project before head-ing back to Denmarkfrom his home inTasmania.

Kick Music releasedTramp's second solo albumRecovering the Wasted Years, on4 February. "It's a true rock albumand he's surrounded himself withDanish musicians this time," saysKick MD Michael Quvang. "It's notheavy rock, but maybe somethingakin to Bryan Adams or JohnCougar." All recording and productionwork was done in a Danish studio.

The CD will reach most of Europethrough a partnership withGermany's Ulftone, and Quvangreports positive interest shown atMidem from other parts of the world."People heard some tracks and it real-ly grabbed them," he says.

Living A Lie, the first single fromthe new set has been getting a fairamount of airplay on specialised sta-tions and Tramp and band will set offon a European tour at the end ofMarch.

The eponymousdebut album was pro-duced by Zed who hasworked with the Cure,

Charlatans, Kent and others.Frontman Mark Rosin& says, "Hereally added something to the music.He'd hear something in his mind andlay it onto a track."

A second single, The Morning After,was released at the same time as thealbum and was the week's "unavoid-able hit" on P3. Meanwhile the coun-try's largest newspaper Jyllands-Posten wrote about the album: "In anutshell, Jupiter Day's astonishingdebut is in many ways the most origi-nal Danish rock release sinceKashmir's The Good Life."

The group's debut album Enter wasreleased a year ago by Edel affiliatePlayground. While sales have beensolid, the band has had great airplaysupport from DR's P3. Getting anadded push from the DMAs,Playground will release the album inother Nordic territories in April.

Hampenberg (Universal)Hampenberg bounded onto the scenearound two years ago as a maskedcreature whose debut single LastNight became an immediate club andradio hit. The follow-up Grab ThatThing was even bigger and spurredthe eponymous pop -trance album tothe top end of the sales charts. Nowthe electronica duo MortenHampenberg and Thomas Sailingwith vocalist Lin Samuelsen are backwith an album called Ducktoy and alead-off single of the same name.

"It's really a great song, thoughmuch harder than the previous sin-gles," says The Voice programme direc-tor Philip Lundsgaard. "They've man-aged to renew the sound and makesomething unique. The track may be abit too hard for heavy airplay, but it'sabsolutely perfect for clubs."

Ducktoy hit the number three sloton the Spanish sales charts and

the holiday exodus from north-ern Europe to Spain hasn't

even begun. Universal isworking to finalise releasedeals in most Europeanterritories, so don't besurprised to walk into aclub and find a crowd

playing with yellow rubberducks.

Singer -songwriters: the UK's next generationIn the past two years, a new wave of British singers -songwriters have started to dent the charts both intheir domestic market and outside the UK. AdamHoworth assesses the potential of these artists asM&M profiles two of the most promising new actscoming from the British Isles.

It wasnot always so, of course, as the lega-cy of Locke, Russell and Murdochcan attest, but the times most defi-nitely started a changin' whenDylan strapped on an acoustic gui-tar. And outside of the US, the ter-ritory where the singer -songwriteris again on the rise is the UK.

Every country has its singer -songwriter tradition, of course, andManu Chao in France, AlejandroSanz in Spain and Kings ofConvenience in Norway clearlyshow the genre produces strongtalent elsewhere in Europe. But inthe UK, a whole new generation ofintrospective, predominantly male(Dido excepted), singer -songwritershave recently come to the fore. Thequestion is, why?

The new coolIan Greaves, the London -basedrock manager at satellite broad-caster Music Choice, says, "Singer -songwriters are popular nowbecause there's a group of talentwhich is writing excellentsongs. For a long while it simplywasn't cool and I think BadlyDrawn Boy has done much to makeit OK to be a young singer -song-writer again because of his inven-tive approach. I think his talentand the success of Belle andSebastian alerted the record labelsto the popularity of acoustic based -songs, so they were more willing totake chances."

One label that took the chancewas EMI Recorded Music which,with Ed Harcourt(Heavenly/EMI:Chrysalis) andMatthew Jay (Food/Parlophone),has two of the more critically laud-ed new acts. "I don't think you canput one reason to it," says CapitolRecords (formerly EMI) interna-tional project manager MardiCaught about the growth of thegenre. "With Ed he's 'working'where he's played and we treatedeach market like it was his ownmarket. Like Sweden-he playedbefore the album release so theyhad ownership in that market-place." Harcourt's album Here BeMonsters has sold 68,000 copiessince its release on June 25, with37,000 sales in the UK. "He doeshis first US promo this week andthe album's not out until March 26.He's in the marketplace a monthbefore the album comes out," con-

tinues Caught, who adds thatHarcourt's "live persona and inti-macy of his shows" help win overaudiences.

Tony Moore is the promoter atLondon's Kashmir Klub; the venuewhere Ed Harcourt was discovered."There's an enormous amount oftalent out there," he tells M&M."We're open six nights a week withno advertising-there's anuntapped market for this kind oflive music, and they will also buythe albums." Moore believes thiswealth of grass roots talent whichrequires little record companyinvestment, is gradualy beingpicked up on by the labels. "Thereis a slow resurgence of interest inlong-term projects that don't cost alot of money in the short term.People realise you can't spend amillion pounds on a project thatonly lasts six months."

Pop's antithesisThe artist who, along with BadlyDrawn Boy, helped kickstart thenew singer -songwriter movementwas David Gray with the multi -platinum selling White Ladder(East West). Hot on his heels cameTom McRae, who Dave Batessigned to his fledgling db labelthree years ago and released hisself -titled debut album on October2 last year. "It's the antithesis ofmanufactured pop," Bates says."Everything is cyclical-I don'tthink anyone said, 'this is whatwe're into now', people have justgravitated towards it.

"When I set the label up it wasthe end of the tail -end of the SpiceGirls and, to my thinking, all thesepeople who were into the SpiceGirls were going to university, andhow cool is it to be into the SpiceGirls? You still want to go out anddance on a Friday and Saturday

Even so,Music Choice's Ian Greaves says, "Ido programme singer -songwriterssuch as Tom McRae and EdHarcourt because they are relevantto the alternative rock audienceand I feel they give me balancewithin the channel." EchoingBates, Greaves adds: "Above allthough, they need to produce goodsongs which make the audience situp and listen. I don't treat singer -songwriters differently to bands.Many current singer songwriters

Tom McRae has "done amazinglywell in Europe," says Bates, with hisself -titled debut. "He's done 60,000in France and 120,000 outside theUK. He's starting the new albumtoday and looking to finish it in thenext couple of months then [get it]out at the end of the summer."

Radio-the final frontierBut one problem for the new armyof bedsit heroes has been a lack ofradio support.

"Touring is expensive and unlessyou get daytime radio play the peakis generally 30,000 [units]," saysKeith Cullen, who signed RichardHawley to his Setanta indie. "To me

night but on a Saturday afternoonor a Sunday evening you want to beinvolved in a more intellectualstate of mind," Bates says. "I readthree years ago they sold moreacoustic guitars in that year thanever before. And so people wereobviously looking for the completeopposite of what was happening."

Bates points to the British col-lege environment as providing botha breeding ground and reliable

it's word-of-mouth records as inde-pendent labels have fuck all moneyand have to depend on word ofmouth." Dave Bates admits, "We'renot played on [public CHR station]Radio 1 as yet. We knew there wasno hit single-no `poptastic' track onit compared to Dylan's blindingsongs-Lay, Lady, Lay-you wantsomething on radio that people cangrab hold of. If you do come up withsomething I'm sure Radio 1 will

have much in common with thelikes of Elbow, Starsailor andColdplay. As long as the song isgood that's what matters."

"I'm not sure that the likes of EdHarcourt, David Mead and TomMcRae are that popular yet," is theview of Jeff Smith, programme con-troller at London CHR stationCapital FM, "and I believe it willtake mainstream CHR stationsplaying them to cross them over.Certainly an artist like David Grayhas benefited form this exposureand I'm sure more will get acceptedby mainstream radio as it searchesfor a wider mix of music to satisfywhat I'm seeing as a growing musi-cal eclecticism amongst CHR lis-teners, particularly at the youngend."

At national AC station, BBCRadio 2, executive producer(music) Cohn Martin reports, "Weplay material from singer -song-writers as we would from anymusic genre that fits our style.There's a degree of expectancy froma self -penned artist missing frommany of the manufactured bandsand pop stars of today. Like every-thing there's good and then there'sbrilliant."

The key, then, for those that seethemselves as the Dylans, Youngs,and Cohens of their generation isto write a hit single that radio can'tignore. Then again, as Dave Batessays, "If this movement gains morestrength [radio] should respond."


MAKING MUSIC

Two of the best...Richard Hawley's late night music

Possibly the least celebrated butmost striking of the new Britishsinger -songwriters is Setanta-signed Richard Hawley, writesAdam Howorth. The Sheffield -bornartist enjoyed stints in theLongpigs and Pulp but it is as asolo performer that he has begunto grab media-if not yet commer-cial-attention.

"His management sent me ademo tape-I didn't know he wasin the Longpigs-and I was listen-ing thinking it's another fuckingdemo," remembers Setanta manag-ing director Keith Cullen. "I wasthinking of throwing in the towelwith the label. The way thingswent with the Divine Comedy itgot more expensive and risky and

they fulfilled their contract and wedidn't want to keep them. To methe artist I want to be involvedwith is one who can build a body ofwork-[who's] not dependent on ahit single-building up a good cat-alogue that will continue to sellover time." Fortunately, when helistened to the demo, Cullen knewhe had found that artist. "I wasreally excited," he says.

"Playing on my own came aboutbecause I had some studio time in alocal studio, so I went in there witha couple of crates of lager," Hawleytells M&M. "I'd never done anythingon my own-always worked on otherpeople's [records]. I never dreamedof singing-I discovered I could butI'm always wary of `LSD'-LeadSinger Disease. But I actually quiteenjoy it now." The result of his earlyendeavours was a self -titled mini -album released through Setanta onApril 23 last year. "The intentionwas to do the mini -album to get theball rolling," says Cullen. "We morethan achieved what we needed toachieve."

The next step was to record afull-length record, Late NightFinal, which came out six monthslater on October 15. "I wanted tocreate something really gentle,"continues Hawley. "Fred Neil,Gene Vincent. A lot of old `shite'-Scott Walker, a lot of cheesy '60sstuff. I'm going back to my roots,-what I listened to with mum anddad when I was a kid. I wanted todo something with some mean-

ing-something romantic and nothit everyone over the head with afuzzbox."

Cullen says: "I think whatRichard has are his melodies,which are more like [those of] the'50s-and he's not like an awkwardsinger -songwriter." As to Hawley'speers, Cullen says, "Tom McRae isover-angsty, Ed Harcourt-I cansee the talent. Matthew Jay I'msure will be dropped imminently.Major labels can't develop artists."

Despite the gentle nature of hismusic, Hawley has enjoyed a mod-icum of daytime airplay. "ComingHome was C -list at Radio 2, andSteve Lamacq [BBC Radio 1 DJ]has played it and booked him for asession," says Cullen.

"Among the current Britishtroupe we like at Radio 2 is RichardHawley," says Cohn Martin, the AC -station's executive producer, music."Just where did he get that dark1950s teenage angst from? Does hehave a Dansette and a pile of dusty45s at home? The great thing aboutRichard is he hasn't forgotten toinclude the melody with the words."

"The record [came] out inAmerica in January and he[recorded] the second album inJanuary and we're putting it out inJune" reports Cullen. '!Our ambi-tion in the UK is 10 to 15,000 sales,60-100,000 worldwide. He's goingto be a very prolific artist."

As with any artist worth hissalt, Hawley doesn't feel part of anew singer -songwriter movement."There's not that much that I couldbe part of," he says. "I feel musical-ly isolated." Musically isolated per-haps, but good enough for his labelboss Keith Cullen to admit,"Richard helped get me inspiredabout music again."

Matthew Jay's acoustic sketchesWhen Matthew Jay's debut albumDraw (Food/Parlophone) came outlast April to much critical acclaimin the UK, the 22 -year old singer -songwriter from Nottingham waswidely compared to US songwriterElliott Smith, writes Menno Visser.Although Jay says: "I'm not famil-iar with his work-I think we justshare influences."

Jay was immediately put in theNew Acoustic Movement box, adescription he is uncomfortablewith. "The only people who men-tion the New Acoustic Movement tome are journalists," he says. "Callit something-that's fine-but Iwouldn't be in that bracket for thenext album. When I started, it'sjust that I didn't have a band andit's difficult to write songs on aelectrical guitar if you don't have a

live outfit. I'm a white boy with anacoustic guitar and it's hard to getaway from that one, but I'm gonnatry some other things: a bit of elec-tric guitar, a bit of hip -hop, what-ever-I'm a closet rocker."

A good example of Jay's experi-ments with other genres was theWhite Label 12 -inch which went asa promo to clubs, featuring a remixof the singer's Drawing Circles byNuphonic dance act Fug. "I wantedto write a song which you couldsing along to in a club which was-n't too 'corny housey' ", Jay says. "Itsounds much better than on theradio because it's louder and theycompress my music on the radiotoo much."

While Jay is currently in thestudio recording his new album, hesupported Starsailor across Europein October and November with hisnew loud live outfit Moonlanding.

Although the single Call MyName Out was C -listed at theBBC's national CHR-outlet Radio 1in December, Jay is struggling forairplay in the rest of Europe. Forexample, Luc Tirez, programmerat Brussels -based Flemish alterna-tive station Studio Brussel, says:"We nearly didn't play MatthewJay because it's a bit too classicrock for our day programming andso it's not a priority. We play thiskind of singer -songwriter materialmainly in a specialist show calledRock Bottom on Sunday evening."

Singer -songwriters at a glanceDAVID GRAYAfter years spent recording in hisbedroom, Gray signed to East Westtwo years ago and has now sold over2.6 million copies (excluding the USand Ireland) of his fourth albumWhite Ladder which he recorded athome in 1998. A new album fromGray is due out later this year.

Die Toten Hosen turn punk into eurosby Deborah Friedman

They record every album and perform every livegig as if it were their last. That, in a nutshell, maybe the secret to success of Germany's most popu-lar German -language rock band, Die Toten Hosen.

The name translates literally to "deadtrousers"-in German slang an idiom for "noth-ing doing" or "boring." But there's nothing bor-ing about the quintet's in -your -face style of punkrock, or its 20 -year history as a German rockphenomenon. Their 16th album, Auswaertsspiel(JKP Records, distributed by Warner), is alreadya shutout, going platinum (300,000+ units) with-in just three weeks of its release on 21 January.It entered M&M's European Top 100 Albums atnumber five and went to number one inGermany, Austria and Switzerland.

In the course of their career, Die Toten Hosenof Duesseldorf have sold more than 10 millionrecords in Germany alone and shared the stagewith international heavyweights as diverse asU2, AC -DC and the Rolling Stones. Their musicreflects something "typically German," saysJKP Records label manager Patrick Orth aboutDie Toten Hosen's border -crossing mass appeal.

"Especially in countries with a taste for hard,honest, guitar rock, like in South America andEastern Europe, Die Toten Hosen's knack for foot-ball -style, beer -drinking sing-alongs evoke arowdy party atmosphere" says Orth. But theirleft -of -centre political outspokenness and satiri-cal sense of humour and self -irony make them notonly a great party band, but also enable them toturn out songs that provide "food fOr thought."

Orth attributes the Hosen phenomenon to theband's continuing ability to attract supporters of allages, social groups and musical preferences."They're constantly adding to their fan base. Joiningthe ranks of faithful fans who've accompanied themover the course of 10, 15, even 20 years, is a steadyinflux of new enthusiasts." Die Toten Hosen may be"ageing punks" in the self -mocking words of charis-matic frontman Campino (39), but "they consistent-ly write songs that appeal to the younger genera-tion," explains Orth. "Low ticket prices (20 euros),affordable merchandising, and employing their ownsecurity that treats concert -goers well," are all partof the recipe that keeps the relationship between theband and their fans a strong one, says Orth. Theband have even been known to perform in competi-tion winners' living rooms.

"They're one of the few bands who are willingto, and enjoy, doing a lot for radio stations andlisteners," says Stephan Laack, music directorat Cologne -based EinsLive (CHR), which putWas Zaehlt -the first single off Auswaertsspiel-on it's A -list when the record came out onNovember 26. Cultivating that personal bond"is far more important and much more effectivethan any marketing campaign," says Orth.Nonetheless, no corners are cut on the market-ing front either. Around euros 1 million arebeing invested over the course of 16 months inthe promotion of Auswaertsspiel, according toOrth. "That may seem like a lot, but we see theneed to go full throttle because there is no 'typ-ical' Hosen fan. The differentiation is huge, fromheavy metal fans to pop consumers, so we coverthe lot."

Gomez look to chart with a bulletby Chris Barrett

After a two year hiatus, Gomez areback. The band shot to fame in1998 after beating the likes ofPulp and Massive Attack to winthe UK's much coveted MercuryMusic Prize with their debutalbum Bring It On. Their returnmarks the European releases of afollow-up album, In our Gun, onMarch 18 and plansfor a European tour.

"We hadn't had alife outside the bandfor three and a halfyears," explains IanBall, one of Gomez'sthree singer/gui-tarists, "[so] itbecame patently obvi-ous that we needed tohave a break, thencome back togetheragain, refreshed as aband." The first cut,Shot Shot, from the

roll in to town. " Having only sentsamplers to key radio stations,Agostino adds, "We know Gomezaren't Britney Spears, we're notexpecting that kind of airplay fromthe band, but we know the usualsupporters will be on board."

One of these is UK public CHRbroadcaster BBC Radio 1, whoseeditor of music policy, Alex Jones-Donelly says, "Gomez are making

inventive guitarmusic which peopledo want to hear andare on form for amore mainstreamaudience with thisrecord."

The band's IanBall says that theobvious reference tofirearms in the sin-gle and album titlesis purely coinciden-tal: "There isn't sup-posed to be . anytheme really. It ain't

Sgt Pepper." But he does admit tobeing inspired by political eventswhile the album was being record-ed during 2001. "It was writtenduring quite a violent year Ithink, even before September 11kicked off, their was a definitefeeling that something was goingto happen on account of GeorgeBush getting in."

On April 5 Gomez are due tostart a 19- date tour of the UK andIreland followed by a fullEuropean itinerary in May.

new Gomez album comes out onHut/Virgin on March 4 and is theband's first single since 1999's WeHaven't Turned Around (off sopho-more album Liquid Skin).

Radio uptake has been relative-ly slow, something Orgie Agostino,international marketing managerat Virgin Records says has beenintentional. "With the Christmasand New Year activities we decidedto wait," he says. "Many Europeanterritories are going to be turningtheir focus on the band when they

EPHEMERAHAPPY, GRATEFUL, AWARE(Ephemera Records)Release date: February18 (UK)Self-sufficiency is rare in themusic industry, but thesethree girls from Bergen inNorway have proved that it

can be done, if only with a little help from theirfriends. The band, who all sing and all playinstruments, have released three albums on theirown label Ephemera Records. And they are alsoresponsible for their own record covers, promomaterial and website. Having enjoyed extensiveairplay in Norway, Ephemera have now turnedtheir attentions to the UK with the single releaseHappy, Grateful, Aware, released through VinylJapan Records. The upbeat guitar pop track, drivenby the girls' crystal clear harmonies reminiscent ofthe Cranberries and the Corrs but with a distinctNordic twang, is taken from the act's sophomorealbum Sun. Their 2001 long -player Balloons &Champagne is currently out in Norway. AlastairBrown, head of music at UK student radio networkSBN added the track last week. Last week's lead by HO wasn't enough to keep itat number one for a 13th consecutive week, soRapture (Tastes So Sweet) (Made/Ministry ofSound) slips down to number four. Surprisingly,ATB's Hold You (Kontor) has missed out on the -top slot, dropping from two to five after beingnudged out by Junior Jack's Thrill Me (PIAS).But Junior Jack's residency at the top may beshort-lived, since 4Clubbers' Children (Dropout!)is running it very close at number two.

There are two newentries in the top 10this week. The first isno stranger to thechart. Double -BritAward winner KylieMinogue (pictured),whose new tune isentitled In Your Eyes,scoots up from num-ber 14 to six, whilealso moving up oneslot on M&M's euro-pean Radio Top 50this week to number

four. The track's predecessor Can't Get You OutOf My Head spent four weeks at number one inNovember 2001. The second new entry in thetop 10 is German DJ Azzido Da Bass' Speed(Can You Feel It) (Club Tools/Edel), featuringCanadian Roland Park, which has rocketed upthe chart from 27 to number nine. The song'sbest markets are Germany and Britain.

Outside the top 10, London -based produc-tion outfit Goldtrix with Andrea Brown presenttheir latest, It's Love (Trippin)(Evolve/Serious), which moves up to 15. But thebiggest gainer this week is Jakatta with EperSo Lonely (Rulin'), moving up the Dance Traxxchart to number 19, and placing itself at num-ber three on the movers list.

Finally, Australia's Josh Abraham'sAddicted to Bass (Festival/Sony/Gusto), record-ed under his Puretone moniker, is up from 33to 23 this week, and was last week's secondhighest new entry on the European Radio Top50 at number 29.

We were one ofthe first stations to start playing her Englishlanguage songs, with Where Does My HeartBeat in 1992. So we've been supporting her for10 years. We've followed her along the way."

Sophie Ellis-Bextor, of Groovejet fame, isstarting to take off in Scandinavia withMurder On The Dancefloor (Polydor).Continued support in the region, as well as inthe UK and Italy, keeps the track in the RadioTop 50, at 29 this week. "This is one of the bestsongs around at the moment," claimsHoueland. "If all dance music was like this,we'd play more of it!"

Other favourites at Radio 102 at themoment include Norwegian act Zuma's newtune Joy In The City (Grappa), Pink's Get TheParty Started (Arista) and Shakira's WheneverWherever (Epic). "It's right at the top here,"says Houeland of the latter. Only AlanisMorissette's Hands Clean (Maverick/WarnerBros.) is keeping the Columbian off the num-ber one spot. Houeland is also a fan of BMG'sDave Matthews Band and says, "SpaceBetween deserves a lot more attention than itreceived in Europe."

Back in the chart, and the highest newentry this week comes from Enrique Iglesias,who follows up his hit Hero with anotherdesigner perfume -like title, Escape(Interscope), at 39. This week, stations of var-ious formats are picking up the song, includ-ing CHR outlets The Voice and Radio ABC inDenmark and Soft AC station Noordzee FM inthe Netherlands.

Italian act DB Boulevard's Point Of View(Illustrious/Airplane/Sony) is following thepattern of a true dance hit-having conqueredthe European club scene, it is currently enjoy-ing extensive airplay across Europe andclimbs up to 27 from 37 on the Radio Top 50.Broadcasters as diverse as CHR network Los40 Principales in Spain, Manchester dancestation Galaxy 102 and Belfast's Cool FM allplaylist the track.

Will Young (pictured), the winner of thehugely popular UK TV series PopIdol, is set to enter the airplay chartin the coming weeks with his debutsingle Evergreen (RCA). Origi-nally, Sony had planned a pan-Euro-pean release for the album on Febru-ary 25, with the exception of Spain,where Servicio De Lavaderia, theSpanish -language version of thealbum, was released last year onColumbia. But, as Epic Europe's mar-keting director Jeroen van der Meerexplains, "We had to adjust our planbecause of the way Wherever Wheneverexploded. As soon as it got serviced toradio, it got picked up straight away."

Before Christmas, Wherever When-ever was already a top 50 airplay hitin Sweden. German and Italian radiowere also very keen on the song, andwhen the single was released in Ger-many on January 21, it went straightin at number one-a remarkableachievement for an artist previouslyunknown in the country.

Twenty-four year -old Shakira's popsound infuses both Latin and Arabicbeats (she is of Lebanese descent),and she is also heavily rock-influ-enced-her vocals on Laundry Servicehave been likened to Alanis Moris-sette or The Cranberries. "She shouldnot be boxed into the Latin corner,"emphasises Van der Meer. "Obvious-ly, she was a superstar in LatinAmerica before we started workingher here with this album, but herappeal is so much wider."

Is Sony surprised by how quicklythe artist has taken off in northernEurope? "We did expect people to bereceptive to Shakira, but we didn'tthink it would happen as quickly as itdid," admits Van der Meer. "Twothings took us by surprise-just howquickly Whenever Whenever succeededat radio, and how quickly we startedselling albums on the back of just onesingle. People hear something uniquein her, something that they respondto instantaneously."

Robert Sehlberg, head of music atStockholm's Rhythmic CHR PowerHit Radio, agrees. "It's that some-thing extra with Wherever Whateverthat turns people on. It's something inthe production-a new string sound,"he muses. "Like the Spice Girls a fewyears ago, she has made it incrediblyquickly and reached out to a lot of dif-ferent target groups."

One of the biggest tests for Shakirawill be the UK market, which in thepast has been slow in picking up onestablished Latino stars such as RickyMartin and Enrique Iglesias. Howev-er, a number of programmers havealready playlisted Whatever Whereverahead of its February 25 UK release,including Samantha Walker, musicproducer at CHR station SouthernFM/Brighton, who is unconcerned bythe "differentness" of the track. "Atthe end of the day it's a great pop songwith a fantastic hook," she says.

In line with the artist's wishes,there has been no special radio edit ofWherever Whenever to take out thepan:pipes or any of the record's other"world music" elements. "That wasone of the things the UK companyheard back," admits Van der Meer."But in the end they [the UK pro-grammers] were just convinced by thequality of the track."

EMI Europe continues with slimming plansA Music & Media staff report

PARIS - Emmanuel de Buretel, chair-man and CEO of EMI Recorded MusicContinental Europe, is continuingwith his programme of structuralchanges in the company's Europeanorganisation, with emphasis this weekon France and the Nordic territories.

As anticipated in M&M last week,Alain Artaud has been appointed presi-dent of Capitol Records France (former-ly EMI Music France), replacing MarcLumbroso, who has left the company.Simultaneously, de Buretel has promot-ed Virgin Records France general man-ager Laurent Chapeau to president ofVirgin Records France. Both appoint-ments are effective immediately.

Artaud was formerly general man-ager of Virgin France imprintsSource and the Labels group. Noindication has been given as towhether he will be replaced in thiscapacity. De Buretel still needs toappoint a president for EMI RecordedMusic France, responsible for boththe Virgin and Capitol in the country.For the time being, he will assumethis role himself. Artaud and Cha-peau will report directly to de Buretelfor the time being, as do all seniorexecutives who were previouslyreporting to Lumbroso.

Artaud created Labels in 1995 as aplatform for indie labels, especiallyfrom the UK. This structure has beenreplicated in several European coun-tries in the past two years. However,the future of the Labels is now said tobe under review.

After joining Virgin in 1990, Cha-peau rose through the ranks until hewas appointed general manager of Vir-

gin in 1999, supervising the recentsuccesses of Manu Chao, Cheb Mami,Alain Souchon and Ben Harper.

Lumbroso, hired in 1998, came withan A&R track record that includedJean -Jacques Goldman, MyleneFarmer and Vanessa Paradis. At EMIMusic France (now Capitol), he enjoyedsuccess with electro-jazz act St Ger-main, electronica act Telepopmusik andpop singer Laam. "Lumbroso brought asense of A&R back to EMI and shouldbe commended for that," says an EMIsource. The source adds that bothArtaud and Chapeau are experiencedoperators but with Lumbroso gone andde Buretel focusing his attention else-where, the French organisation nowlacks top executives with strong A&Rcredentials.

In the Nordic region, de Buretel hasappointed country presidents report-ing directly to him and overseeing bothCapitol and Virgin in their own terri-tories. In the process, he has aban-doned Capitol Records' (formerly EMIMusic) pan -regional structure headedby Michael Ritto.

In Norway, Virgin Records MD PerEirik Johansen has been handed theleadership of EMI Recorded MusicNorway, in charge of staff dividedamong Capitol Records, VirginRecords and the Trondheim -basedlabel Norske Gram.

Nils Heldal, the former station man-ager at Norway's public CHR stationNRK Petre who was named managingdirector of EMI Norway just eightmonths ago, has left the company withimmediate effect.

Johansen would not elaborate onhis cost -saving plans for the company,but EMI and Virgin in Norway have in

recent years been based in the sameoffice building and have largely sharedadministrative staff. M&M under-stands the company is therefore notlikely to suffer the same merger effectsas in other countries.

When asked what A&R philoso-phies Johansen will assign to Capitoland Virgin in the territory, heresponds: "Norway is a very smallcountry, and it will depend on theA&R people who will work with theartists."

In Sweden, Asa Torneryd has beennamed president of EMI RecordedMusic Sweden. The current MD of EMIin Sweden, Stefan Gullberg, will leavethe company. Torneryd was recruitedfrom her position as MD of Zomba'sStockholm office to replace AndersHjelmtorp as MD of Virgin in 1999.

In Denmark, Ritto takes over aspresident of EMI Recorded Music Den-mark, with responsibility for bothCapitol Records and Virgin Records,while Henriette Blix, managing direc-tor of Virgin Records Denmark, leavesthe company. Ritto, described by deBuretel as "one of the most talentedmusic executives in Scandinaviatoday," was previously EMI RecordedMusic's head of the Nordic region.

Of Blix, who joined Virgin first in1983, de Buretel says: "I am sad to seeHenriette leave us. She is one of thebest female music executives in theregion and she has been a loyal Virginperson throughout her impressivecareer with us."

Veikko Koivumaki continues as headof EMI Recorded Music Finland, sincethere was no Virgin operation there.

An album release, which will besung in both German and English, isalso planned, and Michaels revealsthat he has had talks with BackstreetBoys and N'Sync manager Lou Perl-man, who he said liked the material

and is waiting for a finished group.Triple M is not new to the talent

show game. Successful German R&Bartist Ayman was discovered via theInternational Talent Award (ITA)show which gave the winner thechance to be produced, and sign a dealwith the label.

Michaels says one advantage ofundertaking this project is that thepublic are more likely to muster thecourage to go to a radio audition thana TV one. He also sees it as a way of

reaching many potential new artists."Our aim is to produce artists fromBerlin, as we think that there is a lotof talent in the city," he says. "RTL is agood partner in that it is one of themost popular radio stations in the cityand able to give our project very goodexposure."

As well as a label deal with BMG,there are negotiations in hand withvarious commercial TV channelsregarding promotion and advertisingcampaigns for the new group.

The Brits were broadcast live bythe UK's BBC Radio 1, and Los 40Principales in Spain, Radio Dimen-sion Suono in Italy and Kiss 909 inGreece broadcast live from the event.Many other stations across Europecarried the live feed provided bybroadcast production company WiseBuddah, which has also produced arecorded highlights package that willair on stations in most European ter-ritories in the coming week.

Meanwhile, inFrance, Chrysalis' French company has beenrenamed Chrysalis Strengholt Music Francefollowing a joint venture with independent Dutchmulti -media group Strengholt, which has alsoled to the creation of Chrysalis Music Benelux.

Swedish public broadcaster Sveriges Radio isto launch a major organisational change thisautumn. Kerstin Brunnberg, programmedirector of SR's five national networks, willpresent a full proposal by the end of March, with afinal go-ahead expected from the SR board in May.

Universal Music Germany is to lose 40% ofits current 517 staffers as a result of itsrelocation from Hamburg to Berlin. UniversalGermany chairman/CEO Tim Renner says thejobs are not being eliminated, and that thevacancies will be filled once the companycompletes its move to the German capital,effective July 1.

One of Norway's most controversial rockjournalists, Hakon Moslet, has been named musicdirector of public CHR station NRK Petre. Moslethas covered culture and entertainment for nationaldaily tabloid newspaper Dagbladet for the past sixyears.
