Richie Chiaraluce

Originally from New Haven, Connecticut. Richie Chiaraluce attended the Navy School of Music and came to Colorado Springs to play with the NORAD Band. He studied woodwinds at the University of Northern Colorado, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Music Education.

He’s a well-known face on bandstands worldwide, having performed with many famous singers including Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, Dakota Staton, and Natalie Cole. He has also performed worldwide as a solo artist, and as a long-time featured performer with Buddy Morrow and The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and the Woody Herman All-Stars.

Richie is featured on several CDs of his own: Because I Love You and Rich Chiaraluce Live at Sherman's Coffee House. He teaches privately, performs at jazz festivals , and can also be seen playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. He loves the Benny Goodman sound as evidenced in his “Tribute to Benny Goodman” but he also brings a wide musical diversity and love for playing the best of all of the Big Bands from Glenn Miller to Duke Ellington , with his All Star Band.

As if he wasn’t busy enough, 2008 represents a whole new chapter in Richie Chiaraluce’s successful musical career. He has been chosen to fill-in the footsteps of long-time Bandleader Dick Johnson and step in as leader of the world-famous The Artie Shaw Orchestra!

Benny Goodman

Benny Goodman, the great American jazz musician, clarinetist and bandleader, was known as the “King of Swing”, "Patriarch of the Clarinet", "The Professor", and "Swing's Senior Statesman". Goodman was born in Chicago. When Benny was 10, his father enrolled him and two older brothers in music lessons. Goodman learned quickly, becoming a strong player at an early age, and was soon playing clarinet professionally while still 'in short pants'. He left for New York City and became a successful session musician during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He made a reputation as a solid player who was prepared and reliable, and became a rising star in the mid-1930s, earning him the title "King of Swing."

In August 1935, Goodman hit the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles with Gene Krupa, Bunny Berigan and Helen Ward, and over the nights of that engagement, a new dance - the “Jitterbug” -captured the dancers on the floor. Within days of the opening, newspapers around the country were headlining stories about the new phenomenon, and Benny Goodman was finally a nationally known star. The Swing Era had officially begun, and soon afterwards the Big Band era exploded.

Benny Goodman's band appeared as a specialty act in major musical features, including The Big Broadcast of 1937, Hollywood Hotel (1938), Syncopation (1942), The Powers Girl (1942), Stage Door Canteen (1943), The Gang's All Here (1943), Sweet and Lowdown (1944) and A Song Is Born (1948). Goodman's only starring feature was Sweet and Low Down (1944).

Whether it’s “In the Mood” and the great sounds of Glenn Miller, or “Opus One” and the swing of Tommy Dorsey, or even the “Sentimental Journey” of the Les Brown Band of Renown, this is the Band who delivers great music in the Big Band style for listening and dancing pleasure!
