MUSIC NOTES

Today before High Mass we wi l l hear Hymne d’ac t ions de grâce (Hymn of thanksgiving) by Jean Langlais . This is a tr iumphant sett ing of the Te Deum , a plainsong hymn appropriate for certa in feasts in the church year . Langlais begins this piece with quotat ions of the original hymn. An English adaptat ion of this hymn can be found in our hymnal at S282 in the front sect ion. This adaptat ion is one of the many contr ibutions to our hymnal by parishioner Bruce Ford. At High Mass the sopranos and a ltos of the Paris h Choir wil l s ing the Missa Brev is (br ief mass) by Engl ish composer Benjamin Britten (1913 -1976). This mass was composed for boys’ voices , though it is successful ly sung by adults as well . The Gloria is in the unusual meter of 7/8 t ime and it contains melodies inspired by pla insong. The Agnus Dei is in a much more dramat ic style with s ighing melodies and f ierce repetit ion. This year is the 100 t h anniversary of Britten’s birth (he was born on St . Ceci l ia ’s Day in 1913) . There wil l be many celebrat ions of his music around the world th is year . This fal l our choirs wi l l perform a B ritten Concert with Timothy Brown as guest conductor. Mr. Brown was for several decades the music director of Clare Col lege in Cambridge, England. He conducted the Clare College Choir here at Grace Church several year s ago for Advent Lessons & Carols ; that service remains one of the highlights of music at Grace Church in the past f ive years . - J o s eph Arndt , D ir e c t or o f Mus i c

Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, who before the passion of your only begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading—Exodus 34: 29-35 Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment a ll that the LORD had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

<\zztzzzzz z z z zrzzzz zz z ztzzzz z z zz z zuzzzz z z z z zizzzz z z z zuzzzz ztzzzz z zz zyzzzz z z zz ztzzzz z z z z zRzzzm Pro- claim the great- ness of the Lord our God;

<zzztrzzzztzzzztzzzzzzzzuzzzzzyzzzzzzzTzzzzzzzzzzzz/ he is the Ho- ly One.

The LORD is King; let the people tremble; he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake. The LORD is great in Zion; he is high above all peoples.

All repeat the Refrain.

Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them.

All repeat the Refrain.

O LORD our God, you answered them indeed; you were a God who forgave them, yet punished them for their evil deeds. Proclaim the greatness of the LORD our God and worship him upon his holy hill; for the LORD our God is the Holy One.

All repeat the Refrain.

Second Reading—I Corinthians 12: 27 – 13: 13 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic po wers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all

6

things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Holy Gospel—Luke 9: 28-36

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

Vzzzzzzzzzzzzzz6zvvvcczdrvczzzYzzzzzzzzz/ People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

About eight days after Peter had acknowledged Jesus as the Christ of God, Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”--not knowing what he said. While he was saying

7

this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

Prayers of the People—Form VII

Let us pray for the holy Catholic Church throughout the world: that the Lord God would deign to keep it in unity, peace, and safety.

Here and after each petition is sung

VzzzzyvrvyvtzvRv/vvrvztvzzzYvzzz/ Lord, in your mer-cy, Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for Mark our bishop, for all bishops, priests, and deacons, and for all who minister in Christ’s holy Church: that in their various callings they may serve God faithfully and devoutly.

Let us pray for all who do not know God as he is revealed in Jesus Christ: that the light of the Gospel may shine in their hearts.

Let us pray for all the nations and peoples of the world, and for those who bear authority among them: that in all their doings they may seek both peace and justice.

Let us pray for the sick and the sorrowful, the hungry and the homeless, the desolate and the oppressed: that the Father of mercies would strengthen, support, and relieve them.

Let us pray for the faithful departed: that the Lord our God would grant them refreshment, light, and peace.

The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.

Confession of Sin Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup

of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the ever-blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
