Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

With Ken Berry having more time to go hiking and anew, down-to-earth management team of Main Levyand David Munns installed at EMI Recorded Music, itwas obvious to most observers that the venerable oldBritish lady that was EMI was in line for a major wake-up call. And by the sound of it, that call is exceeding allprevious expectations.

The harsh medicine that doctor Levy and professorMunns are administering to the body of EMI willundoubtedly leave some scarring, but is viewed bymany, not least in the company itself, as emergencytreatment that should have been carried out before.

But the point is that it hadn't-and it couldn'thave-been done.

There are at least two reasons. One was the pres-ence of a Virgin man, Ken Berry, at the top of the com-pany. The other was the painful process the companywent through with its unsuccessful proposed mergerwith first Warner and then BMG, which froze anychanges for over two years.

As long as Berry was there, Virgin's status as astand-alone label within the EMI empire was notlikely to be tampered with. First because it would

have undermined the free spirit of the companyRichard Branson built (and which persisted after hesold it): both labels never really mingled, and EMIwas perceived by the Virgin team as a gentrified, uncool company. Secondly, it was Berry's back-upplan and insurance policy that if things went wrongat EMI, Virgin could have been sold and he couldhave moved on.

When all the merger options had been explored andabandoned, Berry's position became untenable andthere was an urgency to slice into the fat of the compa-ny and look at Virgin and EMI from a structural pointof view.

For Levy and Munns, that was the only way forward. The dynamic duo's rush to get things done before the clo-sure of its financial year (in order to start with a cleanbalance sheet) is understandable. They reckon that theycan trim down the size of the company without affectingmassively its ability to deliver music. That was broadly what they did atPolyGram, and it didn't do too badlyfor them.

There is a human cost, however,as well as the risk of losing some ofthe free spirit that made Virgin adifferent record company. Once theyhave put the new structure andmanagement in place, all they needis hits. That's the hardest part!

UK follows France in bucking trendby Gareth Thomas

LONDON - Following in the foot-steps of France, the UK's recordedmusic market bucked theglobal trend by registeringan increase in sales for2001, largely thanks to theperformance of local reper-toire.

Figures released byUK labels' body the BPIshow sales of pre-recordedmusic in the UK rose by5.3% in 2001 to £1.23 bil-lion (euros 2.02bn), anincrease the organisation describesas "impressive".

Album shipments grew by 4.4%in volume, with the top seven of thebest-selling albums all coming from

British artists. The best-sellingalbum of the year was Dido's NoAngel (Cheeky/BMG), which soldover two million copies in the UK

alone. Other top -sellingalbums came from EMI'sRobbie Williams, Tel -star's Craig David andGorillaz (Parlophone).

"Too much is made ofthe importance of eco-nomic factors in themusic market place,"says chairman and CEOof EMI Recorded Music &Ireland Tony Wadsworth.

"And it's often overlooked, thatwhen you have great music-guesswhat?-the market increases. It'sno coincidence that this comes at atime when UK music is doing bet-

ter overseas than for many years."A further feature of album sales

in 2001 was the impact of greatesthits collections, which accountedfor 23.5% of top 100 album sales. This was an increase on 17.9% in2000, despite the fact that a similarnumber of "best of titles werereleased in both years.

On the downside, singles ship-ments fell below the 60 million unitmark for the first time since 1993,although singles sold in the UKstill account for around a third oftotal European sales. And tworeleases achieved sales of over onemillion units: It Wasn't Me (Univer-sal) by Shaggy and TV "Popstars"group Hear'Say's Pure and Simple(Polydor), which was also thefastest -selling debut single.

McGee's Poptones joins forces with Telstarby Adam Howorth

LONDON - Poptones, the UK indielabel set up by ex -Creation boss AlanMcGee, is to set up a joint ventureimprint with the UK's largest inde-pendent label, Telstar Records.

Under the terms of the agree-ment, key acts signed to McGee'slabel will be provided with fundingand marketing resources by Telstar, whose roster includes Craig David,Mis-Teeq and De Nada.

Negotiations between the twocompanies began in November whenPoptones was forced to lay off itsworkforce due to "streamlining inline with current circumstances inthe music industry."

At the time, the company's shareprice had dropped from a first daytrading high of 2.75 pence (euros0.04) to 0.4 pence.

Following the Telstar news, andwith Swedish rock band The Hives(licensed to Poptones in the UK) cur-rently at numberseven in the UKalbum chartswith Your NewFavourite Band(Burning Heart),the Poptonesshare price roseto 1.36 pence.

The Hives, whose new singleHate To Say ITold You So also looks set to enterhigh in the UK charts, are the onlyPoptones act confirmed for the newimprint.

In a statement, Poptones chair-man Mike Blackburn said the moverepresented "an attractive way offunding Poptones into the future."

McGee, who discovered Oasis, was unavailable for comment, buttold M&M last month: "Poptones

now has no staff and hasbecome a virtual office-mycouch, my mobile and mylaptop."

M&M understands thelabel still retains press offi-cer Susie Ember, and A&Rscouts Ian Johnsen andAlan Hake on a consultancybasis.

Telstar Music Groupmanaging director Jeremy

Marsh, and A&R director Pete Had-field, who negotiated the deal onbehalf of Telstar, said in a jointstatement: "Alan McGee is one ofthe great music industry visionarieswith a track record second to none. This new joint venture adds realmuscle to our A&R efforts."

Emap moves to improve Performanceby Jon Heasman

LONDON - The Emap Per-formance Network (EPN)-part of UK media giantEmap-has announced anApril 1 shake-up of itsradio operations which willsee Mark Story appointedto the new position of man-aging director, radio and AndyRoberts (pictured)taking the groupprogramme direc-tor's role.

Story's new jobsees him takeresponsibility forall of EPN's radiointerests, including thedevelopment of new digitalradio brands. Previously, asMD of Kiss 100 (dance) andMagic 105.4 (soft AC), hisremit was confined to thecompany's flagship Londonstations. He reports to EPNmanaging director Dee Ford.

In addition to Story'sMD positions at Kiss andMagic, he had also beenhead of dance music forEPN. Story denies that hisappointment as radio man-aging director marks areturn to platform -specificmanagement at EPN, fol-lowing a content -specific

approach intro-duced in 2000. Hetells M&M that hesees his new postof radio MD interms of "wideningmy brief," andadds that he willstill have responsi-bilities related to

Kiss TV and Emap's dancemagazines.

Kiss 100 programmedirector Andy Roberts hasbeen promoted to groupprogramme director inplace of Phil Roberts, whois in discussions about anew role within the compa-

ny. Andy Roberts -whowith Story was responsiblefor the highly -successfulrelaunch three years ago ofKiss FM as the more main-stream Kiss 100 -will over-see Kiss 100 and Emap'seight "Big City" local FMstations. The Magic net-work will remain in thehands of programme direc-tor Trevor White.

The change in Emap'stop programmer follows adecline in audience for theBig City network in recenttimes -its 16.1% share oflistening in the fourthquarter of 2001 is sharplydown on the 20.2% share itenjoyed in the same quar-ter two years previously.

Story says the appoint-ment of Andy Roberts asgroup PD is a logical onegiven the rapport theyenjoyed together at Kiss, where he says Roberts'record "speaks for itself."

RADIO ACTIVE

Homework pays for air talentFor even the most naturally gifted radio presenters, someform of show prep-no matter how informal-is anessential ingredient for creating a winning show. In anextract from her book The Powerful Radio Workbook, radio consultant Valerie Geller, who has coached pre-senters involved in both talk radio and personality -based music radio, gives some advice on programmeplanning.

Ageneral would never gointo battle without aplan. A surgeon wouldnever go into the oper-ating room without a

preliminary work -up. Yet it is sur-prising how many air personalitiesshow up for work and just wait tosee what happens. Some days youmight get lucky, but for succeedingover the long haul, show prep isessential. If a talent is prepared, itdoes not matter if he or she slidesin at 11:59. The host can still do agreat show.

It is very easy to do radio on abusy day when many interestingthings are happening. The art ofthe job is to be fantastic on air andcreate powerful radio when there isvery little going on. These are thedays when show prep is key.

It also helps the show if the pre-

senter, programmer and producerall understand clearly who the tar-get audience is. Show prep is aprocess that does not begin whenyou get into the station in themorning, but rather involvesobserving life all throughout theday, week and year in order to findsubjects.

The best personalities and showproducers compile their materialfrom various sources in addition tolife experience: articles from maga-zines or the newspaper, writtenideas, and items discovered fromthe Internet.

Everyone has his or her ownway of organising show prep mate-rials, but if a host or presentersounds consistently disorganisedon the air, try coming up withanother system. If a host is pre-pared but cannot access an item

during the on -air performance, allthat prep is wasted and the showcan wander.

Creative talent, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, are constantlyengaged in show prep. Everythingin their lives, what they read, eat, feel, experience and even dream, all this goes into their shows. A topprofessional can talk about any-thing, but it helps if there is somegenuine interest or the presentercan find a personal connection tothe topic.

Good talent utilises everythingincluding their personal experi-

ting boring or too private. You can go personal, even dis-

cuss people you know or have comeinto contact with. The only rule isthat no one should be allowed tohurt others or endanger them inany way. Not only can there belegal consequences to giving specif-ic information about people's pri-vate lives, but there can be securi-ty issues as well.

Often a little camouflageenables more creative and dramat-ic storytelling without riskingsomeone physical harm or emotion-al embarrassment. What is your

ences and relationships. So how personal can you get? This

is a huge question. No one wants tohear the boring minutia of your life, but the more personal you go, themore universal the subject becomes. There is a big difference betweenpersonal and private. The answer isas personal as you can without get-

point? If entertaining your audi-ence is the goal, then does it reallymatter if something happened toyour wife or "a woman I know..."?Try the approach: "The story youare about to hear is true, but thenames have been changed to pro-tect the innocent." Tell the truth.Never be boring.

Rules for powerful show prep1. Go with the momentIf something spontaneous happens onthe air that is better than what youhave prepared, go with it! You wouldhappily take a detour to see some-thing interesting while travelling. The magic moments on radio-abreaking news story or a fabulouscaller-happen when you least expectthem, and when they occur it is won-derful. Although there is no substi-tute for walking into the station thor-oughly prepared, you must also bewilling to throw that stack of stuff outof the window when something irre-sistible turns up.

2. Why are we doing this? What is your purpose for today's top-ics? Always have a specific reason forwanting a guest. Avoid "guest -o -mania." If a guest has been bookedfor you, know the reason. Ask theproducer, "What has this persondone? Why is he or she special?"

Never promise a guest a setamount of time on the air. Giveyourself an "out" in case the personis dull. Instead, when you pre-arrange the interview, just ask for"a few minutes" of his or her time.

Also, make it clear that becausethis is live radio, it is always possiblethat a guest may be pre-empted by abreaking story. You have now pro-tected yourself from the potentiallyembarrassing situation of having to

dump a guest if he or she is boring orif a bigger opportunity arises.

I am frequently asked for a ruleabout guests. Unless you are doingan interview -based show, I adviseusing guests as spice. Like great

seasoning in a bland meal, guestscan be wonderful. Good guests canmake a show, but they must be gift-ed communicators with passionand something relevant to say.

The best guests are people whohave some kind of unique personalexperience, with a story to tell, rather than just being experts intheir field.

3. Warning to managersManagers, particularly those ori-ented to sales or goals and results, like to hear guests on the air inorder to feel that the host and pro-ducer have done some work to book

the show and justify their salaries. They like to see bodies at desks foreight hours a day.

Many broadcast managers donot come from creative back-grounds. Because of this, often

managers feel most comfortableseeing people working.

We are accustomed to believingwhat we see. Management have ahard time accepting that a talentfighting with his or her mechanic isactually doing show prep, but it canbe true. A manager may not under-stand that if you are having the tyrechanged on your car, you can actuallybe doing show prep for your airshift.

Broadcasting is not school, or afactory job where we punch in oureight hours a day. Radio work is dif-ferent, more like art than manufac-turing. A gallery owner would notcall an artist at 8:45 in the morning

and ask, "Are you at your easel yet?How many brushes have you used?"The only hard rule is: be preparedand on time for your show.

What listeners respond to is thefinished product. Radio peoplework very differently. Our productis on the radio. Our preparation isreal but invisible.

4. Be preparedIdeas come at anytime, anywhere.Always be prepared. Carry a taperecorder or note pad at all times.Don't forget spare batteries for thattape recorder. If we were workingas photographers, we would alwayshave a camera ready. But we workin radio and our medium is sound. When was the last time youthought to yourself, "I wish I had atape recorder right now?" They aresmall and inexpensive. Get one.Carry it. If you are not comfortablecarrying a tape recorder, at leastkeep paper and pen handy so thatyou can jot down a great ideabefore it is gone. Great ideas comein the shower, the car, wake you upat night. Write them down.

5. Make friends outside the businessHang out with normal people. If youonly associate with other broadcast-ers, you limit your vision. Expandyour horizons. Talk to everyone. Yourinner circle should contain people

who do other work and have a varietyof interests and experiences. Listen tothem. Find out what they are think-ing, worrying about, and talkingabout. It will help your show tremen-dously. Read everything. Watcheverything. Hang out with creativepeople, and learn from them. Studycreative performers outside of radio.

6. Know your targetKnow your audience. Do the listen-ers have a lifestyle that is differentfrom the presenter's? Probably so.Perhaps a host lives in a busy urbancentre, whereas the bulk of the sta-tion's listeners are in the suburbs orrural areas. You need to know whatgoes on where they live too. Readthe local newspapers, and drivearound to get a feeling for the area.Attend functions. Meet people. Getto know your city. Eat where yourlisteners eat: shop where they shop.Stay curious, alive, and interested.Check out the Internet.

7. Take a test driveDiscuss show ideas with somebodyelse. Prep is much easier when youhave the luxury of working with atalented producer. He or she canhelp form questions you will ask on

air and points you will make toengage your audience. Try bounc-ing the ideas off anyone aroundyou: the call screener, the pro-gramme director, someone in news,or the station's security guard. Itmay help you focus on what is real-ly interesting about the topic, ortake it in a different direction.

8. Prep warningDo not do your show before the show.Testing out an idea should not be con-fused with rehearsing a monologue.Save your actual performance for thelive microphone. It won't sound asgood the second time around.

9. Be generous with othersIf you have found a topic thatwould be perfect for somebody elseat the station, pass it along. Leavethe article, book, note, etc in thatperson's mailbox, or give him orher a call. The success of a stationdepends on the efforts of all its cre-ative members.

10. ExperimentBreak rules if you can come upwith a more successful method.Take what works for you, and leavethe rest.

Creating Powerful Radio:a checklist

Before you go on air with a topic ask:

Is it relevant? Does it matter?

Do you care?

Do the listeners care?

What will I do if this topic gets boring?

Do I have a fall -back plan?

MBA REPORTS

2001: A global sales odysseyTie

global pie of legitimaterecord sales may be shrinking, but it was still a multi-plat-num meal for many in 2001. In

fact, for a pair of acts -the UK'sDido and the US's Linkin Park -itwas a proper banquet, as their debutreleases became the biggest albumsin the world last year, at 8.6 millionand 8.5 million copies shipped, respectively. A third newcomer, AliciaKeys, also saw her opening effort rateas one of the top titles of the year.

The Global 20 represents the firsttime that Billboard has ranked theworld's biggest albums of a calendaryear, based on figures supplied byrecord companies. These figures -shipments to the trade -largely rep-resent the only globally consistentinformation available, and are alsothe basis on which the InternationalFederation of the PhonographicIndustry (IFPI) annually calculatesthe volume and value of the world-wide recorded music business.

Health warningFor their part, the five multinationalrecord companies track and reportsales in various ways, as do the world'sindependent labels. The data behindThe Global 20 may be subject to this"health warning" but is arguably agood indicator of the year's top albums.

Dido earned her global crown a full30 months after No Angel was issuedby Arista Records in the US, and 14months after its UK release in theUK. The album shipped 1.7 million

Worldwide record salesmight be falling, but therewere some notable bigsellers during the calendaryear 2001. Adam White ofM&M's sister publicationBillboard reviews the mag-azine's first ever rankings.copies in 2000 -almost entirely in theUS -and then rolled around theworld. Its cumulative shipments sincerelease now exceed 10.5 million, according to Arista VP of internation-al marketing Frances Georgeson.

In the "open big, burn fast" envi-ronment that the global music busi-ness has become, the 2001 achieve-ment of No Angel may be a record notsoon broken. En route to becomingthe top album in the world last year,it spent a remarkable 33 weekslodged simultaneously inside the top10 of three or more of the 10 leadingmusic markets. No other releasematched that status or longevity dur-ing the calendar year. Only threeother albums -by Shaggy, Enya, andDestiny's Child -sustained three ormore simultaneous top 10 occupan-cies for half as long as Dido.

Warner Bros. released Linkin Park'sHybrid Theory considerably later thanArista issued No Angel, but it swiftlytook the album -and the band -to theworld. Between January andSeptember last year, the six -piece spent12 weeks outside the US on promotionchores. The result: Hybrid Theoryshipped 3.7 million copies outside theUS in 2001, complementing its domestictally of 4.8 million. The performanceincludes almost one million units movedin the UK. Warner Bros. senior VP ofinternational Steve Margo asks, "Whenwas the last time a rock record sold thatmany [copies] in England?"

Seasoned starsThe Global 20 features its share ofseasoned campaigners -Madonna(with two albums), Michael and JanetJackson, Pink Floyd -but the bulk ofslots were taken by artists who wereunknown 10 years ago. As for reper-toire source, the US is home to 13 ofthe 18 acts, the UK to three, andIreland and Jamaica to one apiece.

To qualify for inclusion in TheGlobal 20, an album must first havefigured on the Billboard CommonCurrency, the weekly scorecard ofalbums that simultaneously attaintop 10 chart status in three or moremarkets from the following list: theUS, Japan, the UK, Germany, France,Canada, Spain, Australia, Italy, andthe Netherlands. According to themost recent data available from theIFPI, these countries account for 82%of global prerecorded music sales.

To produce The Global 20, totalworldwide sales of the qualifyingalbums were requested from therecord companies and results rankedaccordingly. The figures were taken

The breakdown by corporate group(see chart, top), shows the top albumsfrom each of the five majors and fromindependents. As with The Global 20,the albums listed met the BillboardCommon Currency criteria. Each ofthe majors' top three titles graduatedto The Global 20, with the exception ofWarner (all five of its titles did so) andUniversal. The latter placed Hotshotin the upper reaches of the worldwideranking, as well as Moulin Rouge.

But the world's largest record com-pany did not have any shortage of bor-der breakers, including albums byEnrique Iglesias and Nickelback (4

million apiece); Andrea Bocelli, LimpBizkit, D12, Blink -182, and BridgetJones's Diary soundtrack (all at over 3million, with Limp Bizkit's cumulativetotal now at 11 million); Bee Gees andMary J. Blige (2.7 million each); U2(2.5 million, for a cumulative 10 mil-lion); and Bob Marley and the Wailers'One Love -The Very Best of BobMarley and the Wailers at 2.4 million.

The impact of the Marley compila-tion reiterates the value of hits pack-ages. In 2001, at least a half -dozen'such releases performed stronglyworldwide, including Madonna'sGHV2, Backstreet Boys' The Hits -Chapter One, and Bee Gees' TheirGreatest Hits -The Record.

Global winnerAnother worldwide winner, RobbieWilliams' Swing When You'reWinning, was not issued by EMI inthe US, but its shipments in Europe,Australia and elsewhere were suffi-ciently robust to lift the album intoThe Global 20, with 4.4 million units.

Among the live albums that cir-cumnavigated the globe were those bySting (2.3 million), Bon Jovi (2.1 mil-lion), and Radiohead (2 million).Meanwhile, Sony Music shipped925,000 pieces of Bruce Springsteenand the E Street Band's Live in NewYork City, a two -disc set.

Regarding music trends, 2001 wasclearly a year in which pop, rock, andR&B took the big numbers. Americanrap and hip -hop does travel, yet seldomto multi -platinum levels outside theUS But the recent exception wasEminem's The Marshall Mathers LP (acumulative 16 million units worldwide, including 2.3 million last year) and hisD12 combo, whose Devil's Nightshipped 3.3 million units in 2001.

As for the record industry's globalpie, the data in The Global 20 under-lines that -despite the popularity ofall these artists -there is a problem.Consider that No Angel, the No. 1album worldwide in 2001, shippedfewer copies than the No. 1 album inthe US alone in 2000: No StringsAttached by 'N Sync. Clearly, theangel's needed in the kitchen.

Silver turns to gold for Nickelback in Europeby Siri Stavenes Dove

Three million albums and counting has pro-duced a return of much more than nickels anddimes in the US for Roadrunner's Canadianrockers Nickelback.

The band's sophomore album, and firstEuropean release, Silver Side Up, came out onthe Continent in October, selling half a millionunits to peak at number six on M&M'sEuropean Top 100 Albums chart. The record iscertified gold in Germany, Denmark,Switzerland, Austria and the UK, where thefirst single-How You Remind Me-is yet to bereleased, on February 25. Chart success else-where gave the single a number 12 position onthe M&M Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.

On February 12 Nickelback kicked off aEuropean tour in London-where it winds up onMarch 16 which is " a combination of touringand promo," according to Roadrunner VP inter-national marketing Paolo D'Alessandro. Inaddition to the live dates, the four -piece are toperform on the UK's Top Of The Pops andCD:UK television shows, while in Italy theirconcert will be filmed and broadcast on MTVSupersonic. The footage will then be repackagedand serviced to all European feeds under theMTV Total Request Live banner. The multi -pur-pose tour also takes in an appearance at theEcho awards in Germany.

Formed in 1996, Nickelback comprises broth-ers Chad and Mike Kroeger, their cousinBrandon and friend Ryan Vikedal. The bandreleased their debut album, The State, on theirown label in 1999, before signing a contractwith Roadrunner after the single, Leader Of

Men, went Top 20 in Canada. On Silver Side Upproduction duties are shared by Pearl Jam pro-ducer Rick Parashar and Randy Staub, who haspreviously worked with Metallica and U2.

As in the US, Nickelback have benefited fromradio support in Europe. "We had some resis-tance from radio to start with, because of theformats, but they have completely opened upnow," says D'Alessandro. How You Remind Mesits at number 11 in the European Radio Top 50chart. One mainstream station that never haddoubts about playing the track is CHR stationNRJ Stockholm in Sweden which playlisted itas early as November 13.

"We were one of the first stations in Europeto play it," confirms head of music FrederikSeverin. "We think the tune is fantastic. It's oneof our most -played songs-it's on the A -list andgets 82 spins a week, it's an incredibly populartune." He adds, "I believe there are a few morehits on the album." Other important radio sup-port comes from BBC Radio 1 (CHR) in the UK,Eins Live (CHR) in Germany and Radio 3 FM(CHR) in the Netherlands.

D'Alessandro continues, "I don't think thisalbum has any limits. It's impossible to say howmuch it can sell. We like the fact that it hasbeen a slow seller. There are so many one -hitwonders around-two months and they are out. That's not what Roadrunner is about,we are arock label. Rock is here to stay and to createcareers, not to produce one -hit wonders."

Forthcoming single Too Bad comes out inApril, followed by a third single-"depending onhow long the first two last," says D'Alessandro."That's the great thing about working for a rocklabel, you can always count on people liking it."

Jovanotti preaches salvationby Mark Worden

Even if he claims he was only try-ing to get people to discuss thewar in Afghanistan, 35 -year -oldItalian singer Jovanotti hasshown an enviable flair for pro-moting his current single,Salvami (Soleluna/Mercury). Thesong, which was written in thewake of 11 September and wasreleased on January 18, has aclear pacifist message and, inorder to get this across, the artistappeared on no less than 38 TVshows in one week in January.Cleverly, he then proceeded to usea collage of these appearances asthe video to the single.

Jovanotti's TV marathonkicked up quite a media storm ashe was attacked by pro -warguests on some of the shows, butthe result is a hit single and proofthat all publicity is good publicity.More importantly perhaps, theartist succeeded in bringingattention to a musical product ina country where industry execu-tives constantly complain aboutthe lack of TV openings for theirartists. Unsurprisingly, expecta-tions are high for the Jovanotti'stenth album, 11 Quinto Mondo, which was released on February 1and went straight to No.1 in theItalian sales charts.

Jovanotti's career began at the

age of 19 in the mid -1980s as a DJon the CHR network Radio Deejay. Now, as a performer, he has toppedItaly's airplay charts withSalvami, and admits that "radiohas been very important". BettySenatore is a presenter on (RAI)Radio 2, where Salvami enjoys"high rotation status". "Salvamicurrently occupies the number one[airplay] spot," she tells Music &Media. "Jovanotti has done some-thing that is both original andmarvellous. He got to play on chatshows that don't normally havemusic, although I think he gen-uinely wanted to promote the anti-war cause."

One of the most controversialelements of Salvami is the refer-ence to Jovanotti's fellowTuscan, the New York -based writerOriana Fallaci, who caused offenceby claiming Muslims were inferiorand that no mercy should be shownin Afghanistan. She also expressedadmiration for the individualcourage of the September 11 hi-jackers. In Salvami, Jovanottirefers to her as, "The journalistand writer who loves war becauseit reminds her of when she wasyoung and beautiful." As a resulthe was mauled on one TV show bythe Berlusconi government's assis-tant minister of culture, VittorioSgarbi, but Jovanotti seems tohave taken it in his stride.

"Music is very compartmen-talised, with protected zones andthis is something that the indus-try encourages. Yet the artists Iadmire are groups like theBeatles who broke this mould bybringing music out to society as awhole. This is what I tried to do, alittle naively perhaps, but I knewI would come under attack,"Jovanotti says.

Jovanotti's much talked abouthit single has also helped detractattention from the fact that hisprevious album, Lorenzo Live(2000), was a flop at retail. StefanoZappaterra, who recently succeed-ed Claudio Buja as head of A&R atUniversal Music Italy, comments:"We're not remotely worried aboutthis album. We've given it a doubleplatinum shipment."

Similarly, Universal hopesthat Il Quinto Mondo could be aborder breaker. Says Zappaterra,"It's getting a simultaneousrelease in Switzerland and theGSA countries, while most of therest of Europe will be releasing itfrom March onwards. Holland andBelgium have traditionally beengood markets for him and we'verecorded at least six of the album'ssongs in Spanish." As for salespredictions, Zappaterra considers"a total of a million units inEurope would be a great result forthis album."

An unlikely popstar, moustachioed53 -year old jazz singer JohnLarkin, aka Scatman John, shot tofame in early 1995 with noveltydance record Scatman (IcebergRecords/RCA). Originating fromLA, Larkin's material was signedto Iceberg Records in Denmarkand licenced to RCA Germany forthe rest of the world. "It was hugein Denmark because it was signedto a local label," says programmedirector at Radio ABC (CHR) inRanders, Denmark Morten Bach."It exploded back then. We were onit right from the start." For a nov-elty track, which often isrigidly tied to a certain period intime, Scatman has survived wellas a one -hit wonder. Seven yearson, Bach keeps the track on thestation's recurrent rotation. "Butthe question is for how long, because it is a novelty numberafter all," he adds.

AIRBORNEThe pick of the week's new singles

by Jen Stone and Miriam Hubner

Tim° MAAsTo GET DOWN (ROCKTHING)(Perfecto)Release date: March 4After crossing over intothe mainstream withremixes for Madonnaand Placebo, DJ Timo

Maas releases the first cut of his debutalbum Loud on March 4. Featuring PhilBarnes on vocals, the guitar -driven trackis similar to the Red Hot Chili Peppers'brand of funk -rock. Unlike the rest of hisalbum, To Get Down (Rock Thing) reliesless on techno beats and electronicsamples and more on real instruments.Despite getting plenty of club play, thetrack is more likely to appeal to wider"rock" audience. John Paul Ballantine, head of music at CHR station CoolFM/Belfast, says: "Timo comes here quitefrequently around our nightclubs. Thissong is more guitar -led, it's not ashardcore. We'd usually put it on aspecialist show, but the nature of the songis what made us put it on our mainplaylist." JS

Currently played at: VRT Studio Brussel/Belgium, Couleur3/Switzerland, Orb Fritz/Germany, Danmarks Radio P3/Denmark,

XFM 104.9/UK, Beat 106/UK, BBC Radio 1/UK, Radio 105/Italy

ANASTACIAONE DAY IN YOUR LIFE(Epic)Release date: March 18One Day In Your Life isthe second single takenfrom Anastacia'ssophomore album FreakOf Nature, which came

out last November. After spending 10weeks on M&M's European Top 100Albums chart, Freak Of Nature finallymade it to the number one spot last week.Meanwhile, the first cut, Paid My Dues, hasresided in the European Radio Top 50 chartfor the past 16 weeks. Anastacia Newkirkwas born into an "arty" Chicago family 29years ago. Her father is a singer and hermother is an actress who performed onBroadway. Gerard Floener, assistant headof music at CHR station RTL RadioLetzebuerg in Luxembourg says: " We hadPaid My Dues still on heavy rotation whenOne Day In Your Life came out. I don'tthink the latter will have the sameimmediate impact as her previous singles-it takes a bit longer to get accustomed to.The track also reminds me a lot of hersingle I'm Outta Love." Adds Floener:"Anastacia is very popular with ouraudience and they welcome every new songthat gets released." MH

Currently playing at: Radio Fiume Ticino/Switzerland, Bayem 3/Germany, Radop Sky+/Estonia, RTL Radio Letzebuerg/Luxembourg,

DANCE BEATThe weekly dance (hart comment by Harold Roth

The 50th number one in the history of the DanceTraxx chart still awaits its coronation, as the 49this heading toward a new longevity record. iiO'sRapture (Tastes So Sweet) (Made/Ministry ofSound) continues to rule the chart for an unbeliev-able 12th week on the trot. Only Daft Punk's OneMore Time (Labels), and Roger Sanchez's AnotherChance (R-Senal/Defected & Sony) have enjoyedmore time at the top; Daft Punk topping the chartsfor 13 straight weeks a year ago, and Sanchezstaying number one last summer for a record -breaking 14 weeks in a row.

This week's number two is ATB's Hold You(Kontor), up two notches from last week's numberfour. It's the German act's highest charting dancefloor hit to date, with areal chance of going all theway to the top next week. If it makes it, it'll be thefirst Dance Traxx number one for the successfulGerman dance label Kontor Records.

Indeed, the race for next week's top spot shouldbe pretty interesting, since Belgian -signed JuniorJack is also in contention with Thrill Me (PIAS).Rocketing from 20 to number three over the pastfortnight, it would be the second track from thatparticular artist to reach the top.

Two tracks come into the top 10 for the firsttime. Jamiroquai's Love Foolosophy (SohoSquare/Sony, last week's number two on theMovers listing, has zipped up to number eighton the overall chart. It's a dance -floor burner inthe UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, as wellas a hit on a European radio-it debuted at 29on last week's European Radio Top 50.Meanwhile, German duo Blank and Jones arethe second new entry to the top 10, climbingfrom number 11 to nine with their latest tune,Desire (Gang Go).

Further down the chart, ATFC's Sleep Talk,(Defected) featuring Lisa Millett, climbs from 148to number 30, making it this week's number one onthe Movers chart.

Finally, Shakira is looking to become a con-tender for the Dance Traxx top 40 with her singleWhenever, Wherever (Epic), also known by itsSpanish title, Suerte. Both the Spanish andEnglish versions have been rapidly climbingM&M's pan-European radio and sales charts.

THIS WEEK'S MOVERS1 Sleep Talk ATFC feat. Lisa Millett (Defected)2 In Your Eyes Kylie Minogue (Parlophone/EMI)3 Love Foolosophy Jamiroquai (Soho Square/Sony)4 Finally Kings Of Tomorrow feat. Julie McKnight (Rude Awakening/Defected)

ON THE AIRM&M's weekly airplay analysis column

Excitement hasbeen high aroundthe radio release ofGeorge Michael'sfirst release in threeyears, Freeek!(Polydor). One ofradio's favouritesons has againwooed program-mers all overEurope, and thesong enters theEuropean RadioTop 50 at 15, also

topping the Most Added listing just one weekafter stations got their hands on it. "It's agreat number-a super single!", exclaims pro-gramme director at CHR station RadioUptown in Copenhagen, Jan Brodde. "Thefirst time you hear it, it seems a bit flat-everyone was expecting a new Fast Love. Butthe more you hear it, the better it gets." Headds: "I was anxious to get the reactions fromthe listeners, but it's been nothing but posi-tive. George Michael has the talent to try dif-ferent things. It's kind of like with Madonna-it is expected that he will experiment. It's a

long way from Jesus ToA Child to Freeek!, butit works."

Another favourite atUptown just now isBrandy's What AboutUs (Atlantic), whichclimbs from 37 to 26this week. "It's an excel-lent song," says Brodde."The listeners feel, aswith the GeorgeMichael track, that itbecomes better and bet-ter. It's a special song;you have to hear it sev-

eral times before you understand how melodi-ous it is. Our listeners quite like productionsthat are not Max Martin-something a bitmore challenging."

Also on Uptown and big hit all overDenmark at the moment, Vent Pd Mig istaken from the Danish blockbuster movie EnKort En Lang. Actor Peter Frodin, who has apart in the film, performs the track. "It's amonster hit," says Brodde. "It sounds a bitlike Ricky Martin's She Bangs. Some peopleare tired of the song, but when it's played inclubs, the dance floor explodes. It has thesame effect as Kylie's Can't Get You Out OfMy Head. Everyone's wild about it."

Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Murder On TheDancefloor (Polydor) is inching its way up theairplay chart, up to 17 from last week's 19.The dance track is just starting to take off inDenmark. "It's going to be big," predictsBrodde. "We played Take Me Home as well, but that didn't really take off here. Everybodyplays Murder On The Dancefloor now, it'sreally growing in Denmark."

In the coming weeks, the Pet Shop Boys'new offering Home And Dry (Chrysalis) looksset to make a big impact at European radio. And Travis' Flowers In The Window(Independiente) is likely to be the latest in along line of radio hits from the Scottish act.

Morissettecontinued from page 1

MTV Live one -hour concert with Ala-nis in Milan, which will be seenacross MTV's network in more than100 million European homes."

The show was recorded in Milanbefore 1,600 invited guests, and sawthe Canadian singer showcase tracksoff her new record as well as from her1995 debut Jagged Little Pill and1998's Supposed Former InfatuationJunkie, which together have soldover 40 million copies.

"With re-establishing her it couldhave gone either way-VH1 andAOR, or the other way," saysMcGhie of MTV's continued supportfor the Maverick/Warner-signedartist. "We're lucky to have MTV'sinvolvement with the project."

The broadcaster's associationwith Morissette dates back sevenyears to when it aired her firstvideo, You Oughta Know. The fol-lowing year she won Best Female atthe MTV Europe Music Awards, andshe has three MTV Video MusicAwards. More recently, she releasedan MTV Unplugged album in 1999.Hansen continues: "Her video,Hands Clean, is receiving across-the-board playlist rotation. We'vesupported Alanis since 1995 andwill continue to do so because shedelivers intelligent, well -craftedmusic."

The European marketing startedon January 4, the European radiodate for the single. "People played itbefore Christmas and thought itwas fantastic," says McGhie. "Radioreaction has been very quick. A lotof the promotion has been upfront.Alanis has been in Europe sinceJanuary 18, and we've been re-establishing her as a young, credi-ble artist-she's only 27. There wasa perception that she had a greatdebut album but had stayed thesame."

To help change this perception,Warner lined up a succession of keypromo performances across Europe."She's been playing small privategigs and showcases for competitionwinners and the media," saysMcGhie. "Most of the time she's beenin London, but she's done shows inStockholm, and is doing one in Parisat the Eiffel Tower and there's one inCologne, and one in Lisbon." Accessto the artist has been possiblebecause, says McGhie "the single isnot going to be commercially releasedin the US. America went to radio onJanuary 21, so we were fortunate togo before then."

There was a webcast broadcastby MSN on February 8 from theWhiskey A -Go -Go venue in LosAngeles, which is exclusive to MSNuntil the end of March. Meanwhile,UK rock station Virgin Radio hasbeen recording some of Morissette'sLondon showcases.

The second single off Under RugSwept is expected to be PreciousIllusions, scheduled for the begin-ning of April by which time, McGhiesays, "summer [tour] dates will havebeen announced".

EMI makes cuts across EuropeGroup about Lumbroso's departure orhis replacement. M&M understandsthat the position of general manager ofCapitol France has been handed toAlain Artaud, current GM of VirginFrance's imprints Source and Labels.

The new line of reporting in Franceremains unclear, since EMI RecordedMusic Continental Europe chairmanand CEO Emmanuel de Buretel, whois still president of Virgin France, hasnot yet appointed a chief executive forEMI in the country. Lumbroso did notreturn calls, de Buretel was unavail-able and a spokeswoman for EMIGroup in London declined to comment.

The changes in France follows theannouncement at the beginning of lastweek of changes in Spain, which seethe departure of Miguel Angel Gomez, president of the Iberian regional divi-sion of Capitol Records. Gomez, whojoined Capitol Records Spain in 1995,also exits as president of Spanishlabels' body AFYVE.

In the wake of Gomez's departure,EMI veteran Chacho Ruiz has beenappointed president of EMI RecordedMusic Spain. Ruiz was president ofEMI Recorded Music Argentina (for-merly EMI Odeon), a company hejoined in 1972, and is relocating toMadrid with immediate effect. Heassumes responsibility for both Capi-tol Records Spain and Virgin RecordsSpain, whose managing directorLydia Fernandez has been confirmedin her role and will now report toRuiz. This is the first time in Spainthe the two label groups, Capitol andVirgin, have come under a singlemanagement. In a statement, EMIsays that "both labels will continue tomaintain their own separate identi-ties in this new structure."

David Ferreira, managing director

of EMI Recorded Music Portugal, willreport directly to de Buretel, "for thetime being", according to a companystatement.' Although nothing is certain in theItalian music industry at themoment, insiders expect that fall -outfrom the EMI restructuring will berelatively minor. EMI Music Italy'spresident and chief executive, Riccar-do Clary, is already head of both divi-sions, 'and Virgin's GM, MarcoAlboni, reports to him.

Many back office operations inItaly, such as legal affairs, IT and per-sonnel, are already run jointly. Capitoland Virgin do, however, operate fromseparate buildings in downtown Milanand this is therefore likely to change.EMI Italy is generally considered oneof the group's most successful opera-tions in Europe-last year it producedItaly's top -selling album (StupidoHotel by Vasco Rossi) and single (Can'tGet You Out of My Head by KylieMinogue), while it also uncovered oneof the country's most promising newartists in Tiziano Ferro.

In Scandinavia, Capitol RecordsMDs Stefan Gullberg in Sweden,Nils Heldal in Norway, WemppaKoivumaki in Finland and MikChristensen and Nikolaj Foss inDenmark report to EMI MusicScandinavia & Finland president &CEO Michael Ritto in Copenhagen, while all Virgin MDs in Scandi-navia-Asa Torneryd in Sweden,Per Eirik Johansen in Norway, andHenriette Blix in Denmark-reportdirectly to de Buretel. One keyquestion is whether the regionalstructure for EMI in Scandinaviawill be retained, and what role Rittowill have in the new set-up.

One former EMI executive notes

continued from page 1

that "the integration has already tak-en place in some of the Scandinaviancountries. In Finland, Virgin was onlyan imprint, but in Denmark there hashistorically been two separate officesand set-ups, the same in Sweden. InNorway, Virgin and EMI have signedand marketed artists separately, butwith a shared financial controller, sales staff and administrative sup-port."

One Nordic EMI executive-whoasked not to be identified-comments:"The process with Levy and Munnscoming in has provided a breath offresh air and given a sense that some-thing is finally happening in the com-pany. Finally, we've got the right peo-ple at the top."

He adds: "It's a very intelligent andway overdue plan. It's totally free ofinternal politics, and it's been a longtime since we saw something like that.[One MD per country] is somethingwhich no-one has dared to think ofbefore, mostly because of legacy, poli-tics, and a few personal preferences.Ever since the EMI -Virgin deal in1992 there have been, and there stillare, managing directors with EMI andVirgin in various countries who don'tknow how to collaborate with each oth-er and maximise common goals."

He concludes: "With the psychologi-cal, almost military order-Thisapplies to everyone, period!'-Levyand Munns have been able to neu-tralise 10 years of infected, internalproblems in one second. Politically, it'sbrilliant-let's just hope the resultswill be the same."

Albarn lauches Honest Jon labelwill release Mali Music on April 1 onhis new label, Honest Jon's. Thealbum was recorded withmusicians from Maliwhen Albarn visited thewest African country in2000.

Honest Jon's takes itsname from a legendarywest London record shopthat has been sellingspecialist music for 30years. An eclectic mix ofreleases on the schedulefor 2002 includesTrinidadian calypso,

for ageswas the

Albarn

Asian breakbeat, Turk-ish folk and Portuguese fado.

"The idea is that it's any kind ofmusic we want, however disparate itmight seem. Because it's all comingfrom the same attitude it'll fit togeth-er on the label," Albarn tells Music &Media.

The Blur singer is an equal partnerin the new venture with Alan Schole-field and Mark Ainley, the shop's co -owners. Albarn, a longtime customer, says he intends to be a fully activepartner and will be keenly involved inA&R-ing the label.

"We'd been thinking about a label

and Damon's enthusiasmcatalyst," reveals Ainley,

while Scholefield adds:"If it's good and it's inter-esting we'll put it out.Damon's album is a col-laborative exchange be-tween two cultures whichsucceeds in drawingsomething special fromboth of them. It's exactlythe sort of record whichexemplifies what thelabel will be about."

Albarn began record-ing Mali Music duringan eight- day trip to

Africa sponsored by the charityOxfam. While there, he spent histime touring the capital Bamakoand surrounding villages andrecording with local musicians, accompanying them on his distinc-tive melodica. Those who are fea-tured on the album include MelBocoum, whose own album Alkibaris released on World Circuit, andkora player Toumani Diabate, whohas collaborated with Americanblues man Taj Mahal and released aseries of albums on Hannibal.

"I came back with 40 hours of tape

continued from page 1

and then started thinking about howto get a record out of it," says Albarn.

Working in his London studiowith Gorillaz bass player Junior Dan,the Blur frontman set about looping, sampling and dubbing the tapes. Headded elements of reggae, house, rock and ragga, although other piecesof music were left virtuallyuntouched. The tapes then went backto Mali, where Bocoum worked fur-ther on them.

Albarn will appear with theAfrican musicians in a concert tolaunch the album at London's Barbi-can Centre on March 26. Prior to therelease of Mali Music, a 12 -inchremix by house DJ Phil Asher will besent to club DJs. Albarn also says heplans summer festival appearanceswith the band.

Meanwhile, Gorillaz are to make afull-length cartoon film later thisyear, and Blur have started work onthe group's next album. Albarn sayshe has written "15 or 16 songs" forthe still -untitled record and esti-mates it will take a further eightmonths in the studio to complete.

The album will be released in2003 and will be Blur's first since1999.
