Intervals
The distance between pitches are called Intervals. In their simplest form, we can consider them as Steps and Leaps.
Pitches that move up or down a tone or semitone are ‘stepping.’ The gap between the pitches is small and this allows for a smooth melody.

Listen to this excerpt and see if you can hear the stepping down in the left hand
How often does it step down?
1.5 Super Mario Bros - Theme
Pitches that move up or down, with many tones in between, are ‘leaping’ and the resulting melody jumps from pitch to pitch.

SESSION 1 - CREATING CHARACTERS | The Main EventFROM BOOK PAGE 11Composition Activity - Video Game Characters
In games, we have heroes, heroines, warriors, villains, wizards, healers, aliens, pranksters and champions. These characters always have their own theme that you hear when they are on screen or in play. Their theme can vary depending on their surroundings or scenes. It all depends on the game play and storyline. In this project, you will create a series of character themes from a game you have imagined. Later in GameComposer you will be able use these themes when learning about compositional devices.
1. What is the title of your video game?
2. Choose 4 characters.
