MAY 2016Greetings:

 Are you available?

A man saw a job ad posted on a construction site, "Handy man wanted; apply within", so he went in to speak with the foreman."Can you drive a Bobcat?" the foreman asked.   "No.""Can you plaster?"  “No.""Have you ever done any carpentry?" "No.""If you don't mind me asking," said the foreman, "what's so handy about you?"  "Well, I only live about five minutes down the road..."

It has been said that "The greatest ability is availability."  It is certainly true that some of the greatest members of the kingdom of God are not those with the most talents and abilities.  Rather, they are people who have made themselves available. They are always there when you need them, always willing to see the need and respond.

No matter what skills you may have, you can’t be helpful to someone else unless you are available.  You can’t help a friend who is hurting unless you are available.  You can't lend a listening ear unless you are available.  You can't show the love of Christ to those who are in need unless you are available.  One thing I have learned through the years -- what people remember most about people that they love is that they were there for them when they needed them.  Availability.

Are you available:• to do gardening• to help with VBS

• to pray for our ministry• to help wax the social hall floor• to run the worship computer 1 Sunday a

month• to provide refreshments for fellowship

time after worship• to deliver flowers to our homebound• to be a volunteer driver for INC• to serve on consistory• to help with our yard sale on June 4• to help with our July 4th Duck Race• to help with our Sept 24th wine and

beer tasting fund raiser• to be a greeter• to be an usher• to be a worship liturgist• to sing in the choir• to teach Sunday school

I am reminded of Isaiah who felt very unworthy to the task to which God had called him, but he said,

"Here am I!  Send me." (Isaiah 6:8) Wherever you need me to go, whatever you need me to do, I'm here and I'm available.

May that be our daily attitude toward God, and toward those around us -- "Here am I! I'm available."

Godspeed

Pastor Rich

NAT’L DAY OF PRAYERThursday, May 5

This year’s theme is Wake Up America.Ultimately, a nation that has learned to wait upon the Lord is a nation that has renewed its hope. No longer rushing about in response to the latest poll or whim, there is a dependence upon the Word of God and eternal matters. Hope is removed from being a campaign slogan to being a lifestyle that centers on the Word of God.Pray for the church in America to begin to model the stable lifestyle of waiting on the Lord.Pray for a movement of the Spirit that creates a dramatic cultural transformation in the United States, bringing about a nation that has learned to put its hope in the Word of God

The National Day of Prayer Service on May 5 will be held at the American Legion Pavilion on JFK Ave in Milltown. The service time is 7pm.

APRIL SHOWERSYou know the old saying, “April showers will bring May flowers.” Spring rains are essential not simply for the growth of flowers but for all agriculture. Spring rains help tomato plants grow, producing big ripe tomatoes for my favorite sandwich the BLT! Can I get an Amen?Did you know that God has promised us showers of blessing?

In Ezekiel 34:26 He promises Israel that if they are obedient to Him that, “there will be showers of blessing.” I don’t know about you but I could use some showers of blessing!

Do you know that one way to assure a shower of blessing from God is to give? The Scripture teaches us that when we tithe/give, God will, “throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have enough for it.” Now that is a shower of blessing!

When you give to the ministry and mission of St. Paul’s you are not just sowing seeds of blessing for your own life but also ensuring that we, with all we do, can bless others. So, let's shower the offering this month in thanks for the showers of blessings God gives us!

Music at St. Paul’s

Why worship with song?

Throughout Scripture, we are exhorted to worship God in song. (See Psalms 147, 148, 149, or 150; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). We witness the Israelites singing as soon as they have crossed the Red Sea (Exodus 15) and the creatures of the Revelation worshipping in song (Rev. 4: 8-11). Why? What happens when we sing our worship?

1. We become the church. Individuals disappear into the congregation or choir and we work together to create something larger than ourselves.

2. We become creation. Singing requires more physically than speaking or reading. More air, more concentration, more listening. We are aware of our unique bodies, wonderfully made.

3. We remember. There is a reason why children learn their ABCs to a song. Ever find yourself returning to it when alphabetizing anything? Likewise, we remember scripture when we sing it. Do you think you know Matthew 5: 15-16? Maybe not verbatim, but I bet “This Little Light of Mine” rings a bell.

Thank God for the gift of song and they opportunity to share it in His praise.

Organ Fund Drive

Did you know that our pipe organ will be 70 years old in 2017? This instrument has served our worship well and should continue to do so long into the future. We do, however, have some parts that need rebuilding!

Our organ includes many leather and felt components, that at 70 years of age, are quite brittle. For example, the mechanisms that open and close the shades and control the overall volume are gradually failing.

St. Paul’s has an Organ Fund to deal with major repairs such as these. Over the coming weeks and months, we will be soliciting donations to this fund. Expect to see an envelope in the mail inviting you to contribute.

For more details about the work or the organ itself, talk to Emily. She would be happy to answer questions or give you a tour of this large instrument!

CONSISTORY MINUTESApril 12th, 2016

In Attendance: Rebecca Jones, Dick MacDowell, Emma Rumen, John Garback, Greg Reeves, Frank Devine, Joanne Cicacco, Chuck Rucinski, Steve Kircher, Debbie Paley (Financial Secretary), and Pastor Rich Weyer

Steve K. called the meeting to order at 7:40pm. Pastor Rich read devotional and lead attendees in prayer to begin the meeting.

March’s minutes were approved with the following correction: In the Finances section, consistory approved February’s finances, not January’s. Motioned by Dick M./seconded by Frank D.

Correspondences: 1) Letter from Jon Napolitano thanking St. Paul’s for their support and donation to the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser. 2) Letter from Ben Erb thanking St. Paul’s for their support and donation to his university’s Dance Marathon fundraiser. 3) Letter from Irma Hubb thanking St. Paul’s for the Easter Lilly she received.

Finances: -March’s finances reviewed by Consistory. -Updates are as follows: -The quarterly water bill was received, with a noticeable reduction due to the water leakage being repaired.

-The organ required repairs, which were originally taken and paid from the Repairs/Equipment section of our Music operating expenses for a total of $1,545.00. The other part of the (same) organ repairs was taken from the Organ Fund for a total of $890.00. The consistory decided to take the

total amount of the repairs from the Organ Fund, in order to keep our expected operating music budget consistent. Therefore $1,545.00 will be given back to the Repairs/Equipment operating budget and will be taken from the Organ Fund. Motioned by Steve K./seconded by Frank K.

-Due to the generous and faithful donations from the congregation St. Paul’s exceeded our budgeted Easter offering income.

-St. Paul’s has seen a decrease in the use of the push pay option for donations and offerings from the parishioners.

-April’s Benevolences went to the Milltown American Legion and Interfaith Network of Care, which both organizations received $768.00, Elijah’s Promised received $187.90, and The World Vision Child received $50.00.

-March’s finances were approved. Motioned by Dick M./seconded by John G.

-Pastor Rich discussed a recent webinar with the topic of Direct Appeals, he shared different helpful tips and information based on what other churches use and find helpful when reaching out to the congregation. Some tips were: Always include a P.S within the letter, utilizing social media to help spread awareness of the direct appeal, and using photos and the church’s ministry to help show how the church is able to reach out to the community with from the support and donations of the congregation.

Consistory: -Consistory discussed changing communion dates based on the major holiday of the previous month, for example if Easter falls on the last Sunday of March, that would service as the communion for the month of April as well. No changes have been made as of this meeting. Communion Dates: -May 1st: Team 1-May 15th: Team 2 for Pentecost and Confirmation Sunday
