It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2012–2013 Music at Incarnation concert series. As you will see in the following pages, we have a very exciting program planned, featuring some of the finest music ever written for the Church.

Our guest artists this season include the choir of New College, Oxford, a choir of men and boys who, despite their name, bring to us a 600-year tradition as one of the finest Anglican choirs in the world. On the other end of the spectrum, New York Polyphony (founded just six years ago) has burst onto the scene as one of the most exciting vocal chamber groups of our time. This four-voice ensemble combines a deep love of Medieval and Renaissance repertoire with a strong commitment to contemporary music and they are thrilling audiences everywhere they perform.

In addition to world-class choral music, we will welcome Ken Cowan for a solo recital on our Noack pipe organ. Recently appointed to the faculty of Rice University, Mr. Cowan is known for his dazzling

artistry, impeccable technique, and imaginative programming. It is no wonder why he is among the most sought-after concert organists in the nation.

The season will be bookended by our own musicians. I will open the series with a solo organ recital in September and we will close the year in May with a concert by our excellent combined choirs.

In addition to our concert series proper, you can hear some of the most beautiful sacred music ever written on a weekly basis at the Church of the Incarnation. Whether in the context of a Sunday morning Holy Communion, weekly Choral Evensong, or one of the special liturgies outlined in this brochure, it is our goal, through the power and beauty of music, to open an avenue to heaven and draw the listener that much closer to Almighty God. We hope you will join us!

ORGAN RECITAL BY SCOTT DETTRA, INCARNATION’S NEWLY APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Scott Dettra comes to Incarnation from Washington, D.C., where he served for five years as Organist and Associate Director of Music at Washington National Cathedral. He has been hailed as one of the finest concert organists of his generation, and his performances are noted for their clarity, rhythmic intensity, and musical elegance. A reception will follow the recital to meet and greet our new Director of Music.

New York Polyphony is establishing a reputation as one of the world’s finest vocal chamber ensembles. Praised for “a rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts” (National Public Radio) the four men deliver dynamic performances in a wide range of styles. The quartet applies not only refined musicianship and interpretive detail but also a uniquely modern sensibility to its varied repertoire, which ranges from austere medieval melodies to cutting-edge contemporary works.

Ken Cowan is one of the most sought-after concert organists in North America. He has performed solo recitals across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Through his many recordings and live performances, he has gained a well-deserved reputation as a true master of his art. Don’t miss what will surely be one of the most anticipated organ recitals in Dallas this season.

Founded in the year 1379, The Choir of New College, Oxford is one of the oldest and most illustrious examples of England’s rich choral heritage. Comprised of 16 boy choristers and about 14 men, the choir’s primary function is to sing Choral Evensong each day during the school term. Under the direction of Dr. Edward Higginbottom since 1976, the choir has achieved international recognition and has brought choral music of high quality to an increasingly wide-ranging public through more than 70 recordings and many critically-acclaimed concerts throughout the world.

Perhaps the most quintessential of Anglican services, Choral Evensong has been sung in English cathedrals, collegiate chapels, and parishes since the sixteenth century. Offered weekly at the Church of the Incarnation, this service combines psalms, canticles, prayers, and an anthem sung by the choir with readings from Holy Scripture, allowing the worshipper to refresh the soul and inform the mind.

A FESTIVAL OF NINE LESSONS & CAROLS

Christmas Lessons and Carols is one of the glorious traditions of Anglican worship. Sung annually at Incarnation since 1957, this service traces the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus through biblical readings, congregational hymns, and carols sung by the choir. Join us for this festive service, which is one of the staples of the holiday season in Dallas.
