Influences on Cuba Music
• The music is a blend from all across the world but most credit can be given to West Africa and the Spanish
• Santeria was a Afro-Cuban religion that greatly influenced their music
▫ Many instruments are needed due to the religious songs
• Cuban music influenced other types such as jazz, Argentina Tango, and West African Afro-beat
Types of Music• Mozambique and Cuban Jazz
▫ African Origin▫ Form of carnival music▫ Jazz is most relevant to Americans because of the similar jazz found in the U.S.
• Yoruba▫ Sacred music used in Lucumi religion▫ Bata drums are the instruments associated with this type
• Bolero▫ Dance tempo is slower▫ Slow, romantic ballad
• Zapateo▫ Used to be very popular▫ Now only really heard in the eastern part of the country
Instruments• Cornet
▫ Evolved from the French horn introduced to Cuba through early European settlers▫ Resembles the trumpet but has a mellower tone
• Valve trombone▫ common in orchestras ▫ Created in Austria in the beginning of 1800’s
Introduced to Cuba soon after▫ The four valve has low sounding varieties
• Ophicleide▫ Low pitched ▫ Invented in France▫ For the most part no longer used
