Music 445, Spring 2013 “Comparative Theory and Musicianship” Explore a variety of forms and strategies that musicians in different traditions deploy to create a successful musical performance. Students will be challenged to analyze aspects of musical sound and structure in selected styles, to relate them to performance context, and to put them into practice playing. Each week’s class will focus on a specific musical culture, sometimes with help from guest musicians. Students will have reading, transcription, and performance assignments. The last two weeks will be devoted to student performances and presentations.
