Research and Scholarly Contributions
Research Grants
Since joining this department in 1996, my research interest has been mainly in the area of
water resources management with focus on water quality. Different issues related to
water quality, such as nitrate and pesticides in groundwater, wastewater disposal from
9
desalination plants, use of oil-contaminated water for irrigation, greywater and
wastewater treatment and reuse, incorporation of water quality issues in integrated
catchment management, soil salinity caused by the use of saline water and reclamation of
saline soils and biosaline agriculture have been the focus areas of my research. These
projects are field based and are of long duration (2/3 years). Omani researchers, students
and technicians have participated actively in my research projects. I have been the
pioneer in starting research on greywater, brine disposal from desalination plants and
managed aquifer recharge in Oman. I have been able to secure research and consultancy
funding from various local (including SQU) and international sources. The following
table provides a list of projects that I have participated as PI or co-investigator at SQU.
Of these I was the Principal Investigator (PI) for 17 (out of 35) projects, 12 (out of 35)
were consultancy projects. 30 of the projects have been completed and 5 are on-going.
