Fossil Hunting

Guide

Best Location:

West Beach, Littlehampton.

Remember to stay with your

adult and not run off, and

keep those eyes peeled...

Where should I look for fossils?

The foreshore

Fossils can be washed up onto the beach by

the sea. Look out for flints which could contain

fossils.

Amongst the shingle

Fossils can be hidden amongst the shingle on

the beach, washed up from below sea level

and left amongst the shingle for you to

discover.

Under rocks

Make sure you check underneath large rocks,

as there might be a fossil hidden from view.

On the tide line

The tide line is a great place to find fossils that

have been newly washed up, and you might be

able to beat others to the best finds!

Good Luck!

Examples of fossils you may find.

Echinocorys echinoid, in an internal

flint mould.

Fossilised sponge in a flint rock.

Impression of a partial

Prinonocidaris, regular chinoid test.

Evidence of where a sponge was

once preserved in flint.

Impression of a spine belonging to

a regular echinoid Temnocidaris. Inoceramid fragment in flint - a

species of bi-valve.
