Course Objectives:

Music 184, Choral Methods, is a course designed to help to prepare the music education student to

 become an effective and successful choral music educator in secondary school. Emphasis is placedupon classroom and rehearsal management and motivational techniques, the inclusion of the special

student, planning and implementing a relevant, appropriate and meaningful curriculum, professionalresponsibility, recruiting and maintaining ensemble membership, effective rehearsal techniques and

strategies, building a relevant and lasting choral music program, choosing and performing culturally,

educationally and aesthetically meaningful music, acquiring survival skills for the beginning teacher and gaining a perspective into the role of music education in the society of the twenty-first century.

Grading Procedure: Midterm 30%, final 45%, quizzes, assignments, projects 20%, class leadership

and participation 5%. Assignments which are late will be graded down 5% for each day that they are late.

Grade Scale: A 95-100 C+ 79-81

A- 92-94 C 75-78

B+ 89-91 C- 72-74

B 85-88 D 69-71

B- 82-84 F 68 and lower 

Tests: There will be two major examinations, a midterm and a final, containing short essay

questions. Occasional quizzes will be given.

Electronic Devices: The use of cell phones and other electronic devices must be kept to the absolute

minimum.

Attendance Policy: Regular attendance is required. Work missed during absences must be made up promptly. Excessive absences, more than 3, will result in a the grade being lowered 1% for each

class missed in excess of 3 classes.
