2016-17 Murray State Women’s Basketball Game Notes

2016-17 NOTESDynamic DuoKe’Shunan James and LeAsia Wright rank first and fourth, respectively in the league in scoring, averaging 19.7 and 15.9 points per game this season. The two have combined to have 18 20-point games this season and have shot 47 percent from the floor. The duo has also scored 20-plus in the same game six different times this year.

20/20 VisionIn Murray State’s 84-77 victory over SIU Edwardsville on January 15 marked the seventh time this season that a pair of Racers have scored 20 or more points in the same contest. Ke’Shunan James and LeAsia Wright led MSU with 23 points each in the win over the Cougars. The Racers have won all seven games in which the feat has been accomplished.

Top-10 ScorerBehind the strength of her 23 points at Southeast Missouri on January 25, junior Ke’Shunan James moved into the top-10 all-time for career scoring in program history. James surpassed Diane Oakley (1979-83) to move into the 10th spot on the list. Next up is Stephanie Minor’s 1,392 career points in ninth. James currently has 1,356 career points.

A Dime ShortKe’Shunan James came just an assist shy of recording the third triple-double in program history in the Racers’ 92-74 victory over EIU on January 11. James scored 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had nine assists in the win. With the 23 points and 11 boards, James did record her second double-double of the season.

Moving Into The Top-10With MSU’s 80-62 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 21, Head Coach Rob Cross moved into 10th-place on the all-time OVC wins list with his 113th career victory. Cross surpassed former Austin Peay coach Susie Gardner’s 112 wins. Former EIU coach Brady Sallee is currently ninth on the all-time list with 136 victories.

Wright 1,000-Point WatchCurrently, LeAsia Wright is 115 points shy of becoming the 20th member of the 1,000-Point Club at Murray State. With 9 games left to play in the regular season for the Racers, Wright would need to average 12.8 points per game the rest of the way in order to reach the milestone. Wright is currently averaging 15.9 points per game this season.

Stealing a Program RecordMSU’s 27 steals in its 93-37 victory over MacMurray on Dec. 12 set a new program record for team steals in a game. The 27 thefts breaks the old mark of 26 set in 2009 against Mid-Continent.

Gulledge Moves Into SecondBehind the strength of her five-block performance against Lipscomb on Nov. 22, Kyra Gulledge passed Joi Scott for career blocks in program history and has moved into second place on the all-time career blocks list in program history. Mechelle Shelton is first on the all-time list with 118 rejections. Currently, Gulledge has 102 career blocks.

James Tallies First Double-Double of the SeasonKe’Shunan James became the first Racer to notch a double-double this season with her 24-point, 15-rebound performance on Nov. 20 in MSU’s 81-70 victory over UNCG. The 15 rebounds are a career-best for James and a season-high for any Racer this season.

James Becomes 19th Member of 1,000-Point ClubWith her first basket against Southern Illinois on Nov. 17, Ke’Shunan James became the 19th member of the 1,000-point club in program history. James becomes the first student-athlete to reach the milestone since Mariah Robinson in 2011-12. In typical James fashion, she made a steal and finished on the other end for her 1,000th point.

Career-High For BetheaBria Bethea came off the bench to provide an offensive spark for the Racers in their 81-49 win over Alabama A&M Nov. 14. Bethea’s career-high of 22 points came on 7-of-12 shooting, including going 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Bethea scored 14 of her points in the third quarter alone.

2016-17 Murray State Women’s Basketball Game Notes

Career-High For GulledgeAbria Gulledge recorded a career-high and notched her first-ever 20-point outing as she scored 23 points in the Racers’ opening night victory over Eureka on Nov. 11. The 23 points surpasses her previous career-best of 19 points set against UT Martin last January.

Racers Picked Fifth in Preseason OVC PollMurray State was picked in a tie for fifth place in the Preseason OVC Poll released in October at OVC Media Day in Nashville. In the poll, as voted on by the league’s coaches and SIDs, the Racers received a total of 146 points along with Southeast Missouri. 2016 OVC Tournament Champion Belmont was picked as the preseason favorite in the league, receiving 21 of the 24 first-place votes.

James Named Preseason All-OVCJames, who was a First Team All-OVC selection a season ago, was fourth in the conference in scoring average at 17.7 points per game in 2015-16. James also ranked seventh in the OVC with two steals per game, 11th in assists (3.4) and 12th in rebounding (6.4). James scored in double figures in 25 games last year and also recorded five double-doubles.

Many Happy ReturnsThe Racers return all five of their starters from the 2015-16 squad that made it to the semifinals of the OVC Tournament last March. Starters Jasmine Borders, Abria Gulledge, Kyra Gulledge, Ke’Shunan James and LeAsia Wright all return this season after starting the final eight games of the season last year for MSU. The Racers also return nearly 80 percent of their scoring and rebounding production from last season.

James Receives 2015-16 First Team All-OVC HonorLast season, Ke’Shunan James became the first Racer since Mariah Robinson in 2013 to be named all-OVC, as she was selected as a first team member. James, was seventh in the league in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per game during league play. She also ranked seventh with two steals per game, was 11th in assists with 3.4 per contest and 12th in rebounding, averaging 6.4 boards a game.

Historic UpsetMurray State became the first No. 8 seed to defeat the No. 1 seed in the OVC Tournament when the Racers defeated UT Martin last season in the opening round of the OVC Tournament. The OVC moved to an eight team format in 1997.

Out of The GateThe Racers are now 22-28 all-time in season openers and are 24-21 in home openers after their 101-59 win over Eureka to open the season. MSU is also 13-10 in season openers that are played at home. Under coach Cross, MSU now has a 7-2 mark in season and home openers.

Home Sweet HomeThis will be the 19th season played in the CFSB Center. The Racers are 146-91 (.616) all-time at “The Bank” and are 74-41 (.643) under Head Coach Rob Cross. The Racers have 14 home dates this season, including non-conference opponents Eureka, Alabama A&M, UNC Greensboro, Lipscomb, Evansville and MacMurray.

New FacesThe Racers welcome five newcomers to this season’s squad, including four freshmen and a junior college transfer. Freshmen Alex Brown from Missouri City, Texas, Katie Mackenzie from Dixon, Calif., Jessica Organ from Riverton Parke, Ind., and Jessica Richards from Barrie, Ontario, Canada and JUCO transfer Mary Jones from Lorain, Ohio and played two seasons at Dakota College at Bottineau, are all new to the Racer program.

Keeping It 100Head Coach Rob Cross became the first coach in program history to reach 100 career wins at MSU last season when the Racers defeated Eastern Illinois, 66-56 on January 27, 2016 at the CFSB Center. Cross is the winningest coach in program history.
