From the Principal Phil Fitzsimons

Welcome to this week’s newsletter.

As this is the final newsletter for the year it is fitting to reflect on the events

that have taken place at the school throughout 2015.

2015 has been another remarkable year in the history of our school.

Continuing the focus this year of Building a Culture of Success, we have

persisted in our goal for excellence in all aspects of school life and have

achieved success in academic outcomes, in the huge variety of activities in our

co-curricular program and in a wide range of community service projects,

whilst maintaining a warm, friendly school environment where the care and

welfare of our students is utmost.

I feel privileged to have led this strong, vibrant school community through a

year of great achievement, both individual and collective, of our students, staff

and the school as a whole. It has also been a year of meticulous planning for

substantial enhancement and refurbishment of our school environment in

response to the school’s strong enrolment growth.

Schools play an integral role in their communities, and this year has seen our

school powering on and fulfilling our responsibilities in providing high quality

education for the Murray Bridge and surrounding areas.

our heads high, applaud our successes and celebrate all the innovative

occurrences at Murray Bridge High.

We continue to aspire and strive to move from a good school to a great

school. We believe that we give you our best, and each year we provide the

best education and the best preparation for life.

In 2015, there were many events and achievements that captured the vision of

our school values really well and demonstrated what we have to offer at

Murray Bridge High School and the reasons we have to be proud of our

school:

Some highlights included:

Re-development of the Resource Centre and the Student Services Office

Young Composers Award By Abbey Kruschel, Chloe Elliott and Mr McFarlane

Year 12 student, Zoe Schwerdt, entered

her own composition Lies into the Young

Composers Award and won second place

in the Year 12 category. It was a piece

originally written for voice and piano that

Zoe adapted for the school’s Senior

Concert band.

On Monday, 23rd of November, the Murray Bridge High School

Senior Concert Band attended the Young Composers Award

ceremony of South Australia; this would be where Zoe’s award

was presented.

25 students travelled by bus to

the Uniting Church of Adelaide

to perform Lies. Light Square

was visited for tea, with Zoe’s

grandparents supplying food for

all (Thank you!). The ceremony

commenced at 7:30pm with

other winners performing their

creations live.

There were many diverse pieces represented, including solo voice,

guitar ensembles, clarinet and piano, electronic music and

singer/songwriter, Chloe Warrick from Loxton who attends The

Station’s Cert III in Music Business course here in Murray Bridge.

Year 11 student, Chloe Helgeson was also present as she

received a commendation for her work, World Behind.

The performance of the Senior Concert Band was a success,

followed by Chloe and Zoe receiving their awards.

Christmas Tree Festival by Sean Hickey

On the 20th of November the Senior Concert Band performed

for the Christmas Tree Festival at the Sound Shell as part of a

three day event held in the Murray Bridge Town Hall. The band

performed a range of music for the audience which culminated in

the lighting of the Christmas Tree on Adelaide Rd opposite the

Sound Shell.

Instrumental Music Showcase By Corey Blanch

On Wednesday, 25th of November, members of the

Murray Bridge High School Senior Concert Band travelled

to Elder Hall - Elder Conservatorium of Music, to

participate in the Instrumental Musical Service (IMS)

showcase. The Day began with the students rehearsing

with the Secondary Schools Concert Band for the

showcase later that evening. The band was comprised of

Woodwind, Brass, Bass, and Percussion and was conducted

by Grant Sheridan. The concert also consisted of other

IMS ensembles, including; String Orchestras, Flute

Ensembles, Guitar Ensemble, and Percussion Ensembles. All

ensembles had a range of students from different year

levels and schools across South Australia. The performance

was a success with a large number of people attending,

including the Director of Programs & Regional Management

- Anne Kibble, Chief Executive of DECD - Tony Harrison,

and a Representative for the Minister of Education.

Music Wrap Up for 2015 by Sean Hickey

With the close of another year’s performances for our

school ensembles, I would like to take a moment to reflect

on what has been and what is still to come. The students

from the Senior Concert Band, Guitar Ensemble and Vocal

Ensemble have performed at many community and school

events this year and have represented our school

community in a professional manner. Though, we are not

done yet. The Senior Concert Band will be performing for

one last time at the Murray Bridge Christmas Carols on the

13th of December 9 (see advert on page 9) performing

both with the Murray Bridge Community Band and as a

stand-alone ensemble as an item during the carols. Year 10

students Ellen Saunders will also be performing a number

of songs as a soloist playing guitar and singing.

Just because school is out, it doesn’t mean that you can’t

continue to enjoy listening to music created by our

students, get online to see our SoundCloud page at

Year 8 Aquatics by Helen Partridge

All year 8 students had the opportunity to participate in 2 days

of water activities at the Murraylands Aquatic Centre during

Week 5. Over 100 Year 8 students took this opportunity and

gained experience on the water as well as building on team

skills. Students worked with instructions to be involved in

various activities including: Sailing, Kayaking, Knee boarding,

Skiing and Wind surfing. Many students were successful at the

activities and were able to celebrate their success with fellow

class mates and Physical Education teachers. Murray Bridge High

School would like to thank the staff at the Murraylands Aquatic

Centre for working with our students and ensuring they had a

great time.

Australian Mathematics Competition –

Staff meet Ernie Dingo by Emily Adams

On Wednesday 25th November Murray Bridge High School

teachers were given the opportunity to attend a workshop,

hosted by Ernie Dingo, on incorporating Indigenous

Perspectives into the Drama and English curriculum. The

Workshop looked specifically at Bran Nue Dae (a film that

Ernie Dingo starred in) and how teachers could workshop

Indigenous texts with students. Ernie’s life experience in the

theatre and the film industry gave great insight as to how to

engage students and encourage them to challenge themselves

in Drama and English with Indigenous work. In addition P J

Oaten from the Children’s Show The Fairies spoke about how

to use ICT to encourage students to present to camera and

learn vital life skills in presentation and public speaking. Both

speakers were incredibly engaging and knowledgeable and we

look forward to using what was taught in our own classrooms.

Men @ Work – Work Experience by Andrew Walkley

In Weeks 4 and 5 of Term 4 the Year 9 Men@Work class

experienced the workforce for themselves thanks to generous

local businesses that welcomed the students for a working

week in the ‘real world’. The elective class gained important

Occupational Health and Safety in the Workforce certification

through online providers. The students researched their

individual area of interest so they could approach a business

and introduce themselves, deliver a resume, and speak to the

manager about the motivating factors for their interest in that

field. Once their paperwork was complete the students were

able to see how businesses and workforces operate and have

a ‘hands-on’ go at some of the procedures and daily

operations of a workplace.

Some of the workplaces included retail stores, fabrication,

landscaping, diesel mechanics, and churches. The young men

who took place in work experience enjoyed the responsibility

of working and learned valuable skills which often translate

into part-time work or referees for job applications.

Year 9 student Bienfait said that he was “digging trenches and

renovating a house – it was good fun”. Rialey did ten hours of

solid work at Adelaide Oval on a hot day but said “it was a

good learning experience”. Bayden “learnt how to make

roller shutters’, Jonny learned “sermon writing and how to not

swear for a week”. His work experience has continued into

his community life and he is delivering another sermon at the

Christian Family Centre in the near future. Zane said his work

was “a good life experience – I learnt a lot of stuff about how

to build a house and the struggles of being a grown man”.

Jordan, who also went to CFC for work experience, said that

“it was one of the best experiences of my school life. The

pizza was good too.”

The Men@Work program at Murray Bridge High School is an

elective subject run in the second semester of Year 9 for boys

who are interested in learning trades and/or gaining exposure

to a workforce they may be considering for a School Based

Apprenticeship. It is also a pathway into Vocational Education

and Training, as the students work closely with the school’s

Trade Training Centre and the helpful staff therein. If you

would like to know more information about the program,

please contact the Year 9 Coordinator Andrew Walkley

via email: [email protected] or by

phone on 0417 879 303 (text message is preferable).

The Independent Learning Centre by Penny Conway, Assistant Principal (FLO)

On Thursday 26th November we held our Semester 2 Presentation

Ceremony at the ILC. We had approximately 125 parents, caregivers,

visitors, staff and students attend. Our Special Guest Presenters were

Mayor Brenton Lewis (Rural City of Murray Bridge), Phil Fitzsimons

(Principal, MBHS), Phillipa Duigan (Partnerships for Learning, Director

DECD), Elona Koop (Partnerships for Learning Coordinator).

Photographed below with Penny Conway (Assistant Principal) and Jo

Heward (FLO Learning Coordinator).

The Presentation Ceremony is an important activity within the ILC as it

gives an opportunity to celebrate our young people’s success in their

learning programs undertaken throughout the current school year.

Certificates were presented to students who completed subjects such

as: Personal Learning Plan: Workplace Practices: Research Project:

Literacy 1 and 2: Numeracy: Vocational Education Subjects:

A highlight of the morning was to acknowledge our SACE completors

for 2015. This year 15 students were successful in completing the

requirements of the SACE (this is pending moderation verification

from the SACE Board). We congratulate these young people and

wish them success in their future endeavours

This semester the student’s brief

was to design animal masks. They

did a fantastic job and several

were on display during our

presentation day ceremony.

KEY DATES:

The ILC will close on Friday,

11 December 2015.

Students return on Monday,

2 February 2016.

I wish all our ILC families a

safe and happy holiday

Lower Murray Trade Training Centre

Update by Greg Fulwood

2015 has finished with a flourish. A number of trainees having

worked later than the rest of their mates to get the finishing

touches on their work to gain their certificates.

Roxanne Rowland and Helen Wilden are working hard getting

all courses ready for next year with numbers in some courses

being high with a couple a little lower than expected.

A number of short courses are being held in Week 8, Barista in

Kitchen 1 at the High School and Automotive at TAFE SA

Murray Bridge.

This being the last newsletter for 2015 Roxanne, Helen and I

would like to wish all staff, students, trainees, parents and our

associated Training Organisations and trainers all the best for a

happy Christmas. We look forward to sharing a productive and

enjoyable 2016 with you all.

Electro-Technology

The trainees had a chance to extend their learning at the end

of the year by building 9volt powered cars which required a

great deal of concentration and skill. They designed and

manufactured the bodies of the cars in the Multi Trades

workshop then transferred to the Soldering workshop where

they finished the fit out of the cars.

The trainees were ecstatic with their finished products and

were able to take them home at the end of the process.

One of the lads is shown adding the finishing touches to his

creation with the other photo showing three very satisfied trainees with their electric cars.

Certificate III Fitness Award by Helen Wilden

Fiona Garlett and Michayla Smith were congratulated at the

Graduation and Recognition Ceremony held at Prince Alfred

College – Adelaide, on Monday night 30th November. Both

girls have successfully completed their full Certificate III Fitness

Instructor course during 2nd Semester this year, travelling to

Mount Barker each Monday.

This intensive course provided a large group of students with

the opportunity to gain their qualification as a Group Fitness

Instructor through an interesting combination of practical

activities, fitness session planning and physiology theory. Both

the girls completed 20 hours of work placement, Fiona at

Anytime Fitness; Michayla at Snap Fitness, and both had

outstanding reports from the instructors at the Fitness Centres.

They also gained 60 SACE Stage 2 Credits through the course.

Both the girls have great opportunities now for further study in

a Certificate IV in Fitness, and/or for working in the industry. Congratulations Fiona and Michayla.
