Reviews

Review of McCarthy - Chronicles of the Investiture ContestFrutolf's text will now be accessible to English-speaking historians, both studentsand professionals who are not at ease with Latin, and therefore unfamiliar with thesources for this crucial period of medieval history. But the translator has done farmore than one would ordinarily expect from a translation. The modest andannotated by on the title page next to the translator's name hides a significantaccomplishment. McCarthy provides in the long introduction of eighty pages asuccinct, knowledgeable and clearly written survey of the historical background ofthe last hundred years or so of the chronicle that is up-to-date and focused onEnglish secondary sources, but includes older essential bibliography in languagesother than English as well. The volume also includes an extensive bibliographydivided into primary and secondary sources (286-311).'Uta-Renate Blumenthal, The Catholic University of America (emerita), TheMedieval Review Review of Jones - Friar's Tales‘David Jones, with an affordable, accessible, small volume, offers today's audience achance to read what their ancestors may have heard eight centuries ago...Finally, anup-to-date bibliography allows scholars to learn still more about the wide range ofthemes and applications employed by those who incorporated sermons and storiesinto their own efforts to save souls.'John L. Murphy, New York Journal of Books Review of Lyon - Noble society‘This is a rich collection and, like other volumes in the Manchester stable, destinedto become a staple of many undergraduate courses.'Johanna Dale, University College London, The Medieval Review Review of McHardy – Richard IIThe preparation of critical editions of primary sources has been integral tomedievalism since the origins of historical research and teaching as a professionalenterprise in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Manchester MedievalSources series has reinvented that tradition for the modern university world, wherethere is a pressing need for primary sources in translation in order to bringstudents closer to the documents upon which historical reconstruction is based.Peter Crooks, Trinity College Dublin, History: Journal of the Historical Association2015

Review of Loud – Roger II..this work is another success for the popular Manchester Medieval Sources Series. With Roger II and the Creation of the Kingdom of Sicily, a significant selection ofmaterials (in this series) are now available in English translation, not only on Italybut also on the wider Mediterranean basin…Whilst Loud begs forgiveness from hisreaders for the substantial size of the book, we should be grateful, for, as one wouldexpect from the Manchester Medieval Sources Series, this work is not simply aselection of translated materials with minimal context and apparatus, but a highlyeffective and fully annotated book that will satisfy both the specialist and those newto the subject.Christopher Heath, University of Manchester, Al-Masāq: Journal of the MedievalMediterranean, 26:1 2014 Review of Horrox - The Black Death‘This is an outstanding collection of documents written by those who lived and diedin the mid-fourteenth century: chosen with great skill, translated felicitously andaccompanied by commentaries which contain a wealth of informed judgements. Itprovides an abundance of intimate insights into a society experiencing the mostlethal epidemic in recorded history, and is essential as well as fascinating readingfor anyone with a serious interest in the middle ages.'John Hatcher, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge Review of Stone and West - The divorce of King Lothar and Queen Theutberger‘Overall, fellow historians will appreciate the expertise, clarity and good sense withwhich Stone and West have approached both the text and the elucidation of itscontext. It is admirably abreast of current scholarship (not least that since 1992) onFrankish politics, the Frankish church, bishops, canon law, patristic and earlymedieval commentaries and use of Latin. This book, in short, is a valuablecontribution to scholarship.'Rosamond McKitterick, Cambridge, Francia-Recensio Reviews of Rabin - The political writings of Archbishop Wolfstan of York‘There is much more of interest that can be gleaned from these texts. Scholars ofsocial, cultural, legal, religious, and political phenomena will find many clues to theearly history of such topics, to just name a few, as penance, marriage, tithes, wergild, oaths, sanctuary, and slavery. And for those interested in broader socialand political ideas, Rabin is undoubtedly right that Wulfstan's writings offer one ofthe most ambitious attempts to describe a coherent "political theology" known fromAnglo-Saxon England (vii). The clarity of the translations and the relatively modestlength of the book will also make it appropriate for use in the undergraduateclassroom. These texts will allow readers to come to their own conclusions aboutRabin's claims that Wulfstan was "a political thinker of the first order," and that hisInstitutes of Polity "represents the most sophisticated work of English politicaltheory before John of Salisbury's Policraticus" (15-16).'Richard Keyser, University of Wisconsin-Madison, The Medieval Review
