OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The economy in nine Mid- west and Plains states con- tinues to strengthen, but a new report released Tues- day suggests businesses are reluctant to hire new work- ers so unemployment will likely remain high. The overall Mid-America Business Conditions index rose for the sixth month in a row in May, but economic doubts remain because of the financial turmoil in Eu- rope and concerns that ex- ports will suffer if the dollar continues strengthening. “There is just too much economic uncertainty right now for firms to hire more aggressively. It is going to take many months before most states in the region re- cover jobs lost since the re- cession,” Creighton Univer- sity economics professor Ernie Goss said. The report, which is based on a survey of supply managers and business leaders, uses a collection of indexes that range from ze- ro to 100, and any score above 50 suggests economic growth in the next three to six months. Scores below 50 suggest a contracting econ- omy. The overall index grew to 64.2 in May from April’s al- ready-strong 61.7, suggest- ing good things for the econ- omy in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Mis- souri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Goss, who oversees the survey, said it will take many months for most states in the region to re- cover the jobs they lost dur- ing the Great Recession, so unemployment won’t im- prove quickly even though the employment index hit its highest level in nearly four years. The employment index increased to 60.1 in May from April’s 58.4 and March’s 57.9. “The financial turmoil in Europe is a threat to the economic expansion under- way. It has increased the value of the dollar, which has made U.S. manufac- tured goods and farm prod- ucts less competitive abroad,” Goss said. But thus far the stronger dollar hasn’t hurt exports. The export order index grew to 59 in May from April’s 57. The import index also im- proved in May to 63.2 from April’s 59.8. Goss said the survey shows that the region’s business managers remain optimistic about the next six months. The May confi- dence index slipped to 69 in May from April’s 72.9 but remained well above the growth-neutral score of 50. The prices-paid index, which tracks the cost of raw materials and supplies, re- mained high in May at 80.4, but it was down slight- ly from April’s 81.2. For the fourth consecu- tive month, supply man- agers increased inventory levels. The survey’s invento- ry index increased to 54.6 in May from April’s 53.2. Other components of the overall index: • New orders increased to 72.4 from April’s 70. • Production or sales hit 72.2, up from 65.8. • And delivery lead time grew to 62.1 from 61.4. The Dow Jones industri- al average dropped almost 113 points. Its plunge came shortly before the close and minutes after Attorney General Eric Holder made the announcement. Stocks in energy companies and oil service providers tum- bled on the news, and oth- er stocks followed. Holder would not say which companies or indi- viduals might be under in- vestigation. But investors quickly dumped stocks across the energy industry. BP PLC, which operated the rig that caused the spill, fell almost 15 per- cent. Anadarko Petroleum Corp., which has a stake in the rig that exploded, tum- bled nearly 20 percent.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) —The economy in nine Mid-west and Plains states con-tinues to strengthen, but anew report released Tues-day suggests businesses arereluctant to hire new work-ers so unemployment willlikely remain high.

The overall Mid-AmericaBusiness Conditions indexrose for the sixth month ina row in May, but economicdoubts remain because ofthe financial turmoil in Eu-rope and concerns that ex-ports will suffer if the dollarcontinues strengthening.

“There is just too mucheconomic uncertainty rightnow for firms to hire moreaggressively. It is going totake many months beforemost states in the region re-cover jobs lost since the re-cession,” Creighton Univer-sity economics professorErnie Goss said.

The report, which isbased on a survey of supplymanagers and businessleaders, uses a collection ofindexes that range from ze-ro to 100, and any scoreabove 50 suggests economicgrowth in the next three tosix months. Scores below 50suggest a contracting econ-omy.

The overall index grew to64.2 in May from April’s al-ready-strong 61.7, suggest-ing good things for the econ-omy in Arkansas, Iowa,Kansas, Minnesota, Mis-souri, Nebraska, NorthDakota, Oklahoma andSouth Dakota.

Goss, who oversees thesurvey, said it will takemany months for moststates in the region to re-cover the jobs they lost dur-ing the Great Recession, sounemployment won’t im-prove quickly even thoughthe employment index hitits highest level in nearlyfour years. The employmentindex increased to 60.1 inMay from April’s 58.4 andMarch’s 57.9.

“The financial turmoil inEurope is a threat to theeconomic expansion under-way. It has increased thevalue of the dollar, whichhas made U.S. manufac-tured goods and farm prod-ucts less competitiveabroad,” Goss said.

But thus far the strongerdollar hasn’t hurt exports. The export order indexgrew to 59 in May fromApril’s 57.

The import index also im-proved in May to 63.2 fromApril’s 59.8.

Goss said the surveyshows that the region’sbusiness managers remainoptimistic about the nextsix months. The May confi-dence index slipped to 69 inMay from April’s 72.9 butremained well above thegrowth-neutral score of 50.

The prices-paid index, which tracks the cost of rawmaterials and supplies, re-mained high in May at80.4, but it was down slight-ly from April’s 81.2.

For the fourth consecu-tive month, supply man-agers increased inventorylevels. The survey’s invento-ry index increased to 54.6

in May from April’s 53.2.Other components of the

overall index:• New orders increased

to 72.4 from April’s 70.• Production or sales hit

72.2, up from 65.8.• And delivery lead time

grew to 62.1 from 61.4.

NEW YORK (AP) —Stocks took another late-day dive Tuesday after thegovernment said it wasstarting criminal and civilinvestigations into theGulf of Mexico oil spill.

The Dow Jones industri-al average dropped almost113 points. Its plunge cameshortly before the close andminutes after AttorneyGeneral Eric Holder madethe announcement. Stocksin energy companies andoil service providers tum-bled on the news, and oth-er stocks followed.

Holder would not saywhich companies or indi-viduals might be under in-vestigation. But investorsquickly dumped stocksacross the energy industry.BP PLC, which operatedthe rig that caused thespill, fell almost 15 per-cent. Anadarko PetroleumCorp., which has a stake inthe rig that exploded, tum-bled nearly 20 percent.
