Municipal Markets, a journey amid the colours and flavours of Cagliari

What more fascinating way of getting to know a city is there than letting yourself be won over by the aromas, colours and flavours of its markets? An unusual and extremely evocative itinerary that Cagliari invites you to discover in order to get in touch with its true soul. Through its markets, it‘s possible to experience some of the daily round of the city, to get close to its traditions, the history of its districts, savouring the most authentic flavour of old Cagliari. Here, the municipal markets are an institution that has endured for more than a hundred years, and it is still possible today to see the remains of its oldest structure, the historic Mercato Vecchio of Largo Carlo Felice. Only in 1954 was the market area sold by the Municipality of Cagliari to certain Banking Institutions. Today, the Municipal Markets are an important feature of the Cagliari economy and offer tourists a pleasurable way to sample the city.

City Markets,one company, different premises

The City of Cagliari’s Markets form a company made up of 600 operators, with annual revenue of more than 50 million euros. In mainly covered premises, located in the key districts of the city, the city markets are aimed at ensuring an adequate and constant supply of the most common foodstuffs so that the families and commercial operators in the region are guaranteed the freshness and genuineness that only the very best products can give.

Not just fruit and vegetables The municipal markets are a rich microcosm of resources that are often unknown not just to the tourists, but even to local people. Everyone knows that here it is possible to buy any variety of fruit and vegetable, meat, fish, cheese and bread. But how many know that the city markets also offer numerous other services to the public such as shoe repair, key cutting, knife-sharpening and even the instant checking of mushrooms by the Local Health Authority at the S. Benedetto market?Shopping at the market has a unique, added value: it means being able to choose from a rich variety of products and services, backed up with good old-fashioned advice, and the openness of the operators, who every day pass on to their customers the secrets of the Sardinian culinary tradition.
