The good life: Seehaus Biergarten is one of many picturesque spots to enjoy an al fresco beer: it’s in the English Garden, one of the world’s largest urban parks

Whether raising a litre Mass (literally, ‘measure’) under the historic vaults of the Hofbräuhaus beer-hall, or rowing gently across the lake

in the english Garden on a summer’s evening, it is impossible not to be seduced by munich’s joie de vivre. This city always seems to be in high spirits, and for any number of reasons: the economy is booming, FC Bayern munich has just scored, the Föhn wind is blowing in the Alps, it’s Oktoberfest time again... Little wonder, then, that the Bavarian capital was rated world’s ‘most Liveable City’ in monocle magazine’s 2010 Quality of Life rankings. most Germans, and many Brits, would agree.

Bidding for Olympic victoryThe city that began life as a small monastic settlement in 1158 is affluent and sophisticated, yet retains a delightful small-town appeal in the Altstadt (Old Town). munich’s central area, around marienplatz square, is largely pedestrianised, and within minutes you can walk to all the major sights – from the gilded state apartments of the residenz to the designer

boutiques on maximilianstrasse and the foodie Viktualienmarkt, teeming with outdoor snackeries. Public transport is easily navigable.

make no mistake, though – for all its intimacy and a population of less than 1.5 million, munich thinks big. The city’s bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics indicates the ambitiousness of a constant, and delightful, overachiever.

Culturally, it’s on a par with most world capitals, possessing 46 museums and 58 theatres at the last count, and treasures like the Bavarian state Opera and Philharmonic (right). It’s a technological trailblazer, home to siemens and the futuristic BmW World, the automobile firm’s customer and exhibition centre. It ticks all the good living boxes with its beer, exciting food and party scene. meanwhile, the Alps are less than an hour away for weekend recreation. t

mad about ChiemgauThere’s a famous castle, but most visitors to these mountains near the Austrian border go for the spectacular sporting activities By Jenny Woolf

See page 15 for a great reader offer on the Alpenhotel Wittelsbach

King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who died 125 years ago this year, is most famous for his Disney-style castle

at Neuschwanstein, but the so-called ‘mad King’ also built another fine (though unfinished) castle, schloss Herrenchiemsee, on Herreninsel, or ‘men’s Island’. It’s on Chiemsee, a lake in the Chiemgau Alps.

Outrageously expensive, with a Hall of mirrors even larger than Louis XIV’s, and some extraordinary meissen porcelain candelabras, Herrenchiemsee helped bankrupt Ludwig. From may to October this year it will host a special exhibition celebrating his life, ‘Twilight of the Gods: King Ludwig II and his era’.

Popular with families, the Chiemgau mountains in summer attract hikers and mountain-bikers to a graded network of trails named after the likes of mozart and Bavarian-born Pope Benedict.

Exceptional golfingThe perimeter of the Chiemsee, Bavaria’s largest lake, hosts seven golf courses. Among these is the only cross-border 18-hole course in europe: it’s in reit im Winkl, a place famous for sports, which is partly in Austria.

Inzell, prettily nestled in an alpine valley a half-hour’s drive from salzburg airport, is the place to experience authentic Bavarian farm-

houses, costumes, traditions and festivals, such as a world accordion championship in June and the annual horse parade in september. Its eisstadion (right) is Germany’s national speed-skating training centre. Inzell is also convenient for sightseeing in Berchtesgaden, with all its olde world charm, and for Lake Chiemsee.

ruhpolding, rather larger, is also popular with tourists. Take a cable car up to the rauschberg or unterberg mountains (both have children’s play areas at the top, as well as trails and refreshment stops) or visit the town’s state-of-the-art wave pool. There’s also a free programme of sports activities, and almost 40 golf courses to discover nearby. t

The high point of any visit to Bavaria is, literally, a trip to the top of the Zugspitze, Germany ’s tallest mountain

at 2,962m. Mercifully, it does not have to entail crampons and ice axes – let the cogwheel train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen take the strain. The journey takes in Grainau, the crystal clear waters of Eibsee (Lake Eib) and the extraordinary tunnel carved through the rock face that comes out on the Zugspitze glacier, a short cable-car ride to the summit.

High dramaFrom here (on a clear day), you can see over 400 peaks in four countries – Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Germany itself. The stunning views are best enjoyed with refreshment from Germany’s highest biergarten, the Gipfelalm, one of four restaurants around the summit; or else from the AlpspiX, a dramatic viewing platform with two crossing steel arms that jut out over a 1,000-metre drop into the Höllental valley below. Here you really can stare into the abyss – and survive.

The whole Zugspitze region is a wonderland for hikers of all fitness levels. Cosmopolitan

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, an attractive mountain town dating back in parts to Roman times, makes a great base for exploring.

Passion PlaySlightly gentler trails are to be found in the Karwendel Alps, a picturesque range of limestone peaks, dotted with wood cabins. Take a cable-car from the exceptionally pretty town of Mittenwald (Karwendel’s main centre on the German side) up to the mountain station – to explore, or just to enjoy the view.

Nearby, the 200 peaks of the Ammergau Alps, home to Germany’s largest contiguous nature reserve, present interesting challenges for hikers, mountain bikers and climbers – while, for the spiritually inclined, there is a Meditation Trail. Sights worth visiting include the royal Linderhof Palace, the Benedictine Ettal Abbey and Oberammergau with its world-famous Passion Play.

Creative types should head for Murnau, less than an hour’s drive from Munich and situated beside Staffelsee (Lake Staffel)

and a large area of unspoilt moorland through which there is an easy 12km trail offering views of the peaks. This picture-postcard town has always been linked with artists, notably the Blaue Reiter (‘Blue Rider’) group and Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. Like him, be inspired! t

happy wanderingWildly romantic Allgäu is the essence of unspoilt Bavarian countryside By Kerry Christiani

King Ludwig II of Bavaria had an unerring knack for picking dreamy locations for his castles. The most famous in all Bavaria

(and beyond) is witchy, turreted schloss Neuschwanstein, near Füssen in the Allgäu Alps, which stretch across southwest Bavaria and into Austria for 166 kms. up close, it seems contrived, with its grotto and rooms inspired by Wagner operas, yet seen from nearby marienbrücke (mary’s Bridge) it is, indeed, the stuff of fairytales.

This part of the Allgäu, known as the

Königswinkel, or King’s Nook, is a great beauty spot. Füssen itself, at the southern tip of Germany’s romantic road, is an ancient town of baroque churches and Gothic houses, famous for lute-making, and a fine base for adventures in the Alps and neighbouring Tyrol. It’s prime hiking and cycling country, with hundreds of miles of trails threading into the mountains and around the shimmering lakes of Forggen and Hopfen. It’s also close to another Ludwig castle, schloss Hohenschwangau, a hunting

base for the Bavarian royals where the young prince spent his summers. It is perhaps not as glamorous as Neuschwanstein, but much older in structure, with foundations dating back to the 12th-century Knights of schwangau.

Flower-rich meadowsTo Allgäu’s south sits Oberstdorf, one of Germany’s highest towns. This quaint village, with houses clad in wooden shingles, is an important centre for holistic medicine and

Fairytale beginnings: Main image: Neuschwanstein Castle, icon of Bavaria. Clockwise from above: thunderous Lech waterfall; Füssen’s fine Old Town; cruise the Forggensee; the flower-strewn Fellhorn

mountain sports – it was rated recently as one of europe’s best-value ski resorts. In summer there is plenty to do: golf, tennis and pony rides for kids as well as hiking. It is surrounded by 10 peaks of more than 2,600m in height, including the Fellhorn, rich in alpine flowers, which has a spectacular viewing station. There are also themed walks,

where you can learn about the local herbs, flowers and mountain cheese production.

Jump for joyeven in summer, Oberstdorf ’s famous schattenberg ski jumps – location of the annual Four Hills Tournament – look impressive and are worth seeing. The best known is in the stillach

valley; it became the first large-scale ski jump in the world when its construction finished in 1950.

Among climbers, the Allgäu Alps rival in popularity the Wetterstein range of mountains around Zugspitze. For ordinary walkers, the best way to appreciate their glorious scenery is by picking up one of the tourist offices’ free guided hikes. t

Since ryanair began flying here in 2009, memmingen has attracted a steady

trickle of visitors – and not before time. Best explored on foot, this charmingly low-key old town is picture-book Bavaria. stroll to the renaissance town hall presiding over the handsome, medieval marktplatz, and enjoy the gabled merchants’ houses on the banks of the stadbach, the hidden courtyards and fortifications. Then take the weight off your feet in cosy taverns serving swabian comfort food, such as spinach-filled maultaschen ravioli, accompanied by robust Franconian wines.

rude healthIn Ottobeuren, 15 minutes from Allgäu airport, a stupendous 8th-century Benedictine abbey rises like a vision above meadows and forested hills. still home to 22 monks, the abbey is one of Germany’s greatest baroque masterpieces. No surface is left

unadorned in the ornate basilica, with marble pillars guiding the eye to a fantasy of frescoes, swirling cherubs and lace-fine stucco. It’s also a mecca for music fans: on saturday afternoons in summer, the abbey resounds to some of the finest organ music in Bavaria.

Just as the abbey exalts the spirit, the body is purified, it’s claimed, by the teachings of Ottobeuren’s most famous son, sebastian Kneipp. A 19th-century priest and pioneer of holistic therapy, Kneipp extolled the healing powers of the natural world – fresh air, exercise, water and herbs. The 58km Kneipp Cycle Trail is a great way to explore this green region in all its soothing beauty. It stops at lesser-known gems like Bad Grönenbach, with its botanical gardens, historic marketplace, hilltop castle (for concerts and exhibitions) and spa hotels, where guests are given a stimulating Kneipp cold-water treatment – all in the cause of good health, naturally. t

The 91-room Prinzregent an der Messe is in Munich’s quiet district of Alt-Riem, only 10 minutes from central Munich by car or train, while the 65-room Prinzregent am Friedensengel stands above the city’s River Isar.

A tonic for tourists – right off the plane Drexel’s Parkhotel is in picturesque Memmingen, one of Germany’s oldest towns. It’s the perfect place to explore the lush scenery of ‘Kneippland’, a sub-alpine region famous for its spas, which practise the theories of holistic pioneer Sebastian Kneipp. The Westerhart golf course is also only 7kms away. The 79-room hotel is near an idyllic park, and has a restaurant serving traditional Bavarian and Swabian food. There’s a free sauna and solarium at the hotel, with a masseur and many wellness treatments available.
