CommentET ANOTHER MARINE COAST STATION,CURACAO/PJC, has closed its W/T services, andwill be shutting down completely at the end of Sep—tember. It’s not a major coast station; in fact many

readers have probably never heard of it. Curacao, with its

neighbours Aruba and Bonaire, form the Netherlands Antilles,a small island group situated in the Caribbean, just off thecoast of Venezuela.

I wonder if the entrance to the harbour at the capitalWillemstad is still as imposing as it was in the 1950s. Theapproach was a channel right through the centre of the town,with rows oftraditional Dutch—style buildings along each bank.I am sure that no-one who sailed in there would forget it.

But that’s not the reason why PJC is engraved upon mymemory. I first went to Curacao in 1951 on the Royal FleetAuxiliary tanker Wave Conqueror, which I had just joined onthe Tyne. As soon as we cleared the English Channel, theCaptain handed me a message for our agents in Willemstad, soI duly consulted the official coast station lists and began call-ing PJC... and calling... and calling. I told the Captain I washaving some problems, but he said there was no panic to clearthe message — it could safely wait until we were a little nearer.

As several days passed, and I still got no joy, I was begin—ning to find my way around the exotic gear and all the drawersand cupboards in the radio office, and discovered tucked awayin one a whole pile of correction booklets and addenda to theAdmiralty List of Radio Signals and the ITU List of CoastStations. It didn‘t take me long to realise that my predecessoron board had not been particularly diligent in entering thecorrections — in fact none had been done for many a moon!

As the realisation dawned, I began to leaf through thecorrections, looking for anything immediately relevant, anddiscovered — surprise, surprise, — that PIC had changed to newHF working frequencies about a month earlier!

At his next scheduled HF watch period I called him. Hecame straight back, telling me that he’d heard my previouscalls and replied, but realised I wasn’t hearing him for somereason. I apologised for any frustration I’d caused, and clearedthat message, much to my own relief and that of the Captain.I am sure he’d been worrying about what a useless young RIOthe Marconi Depot at Newcastle had given him , I was onlyjust past my seventeenth birthday at the time!

The episode with PJC taught me one golden rule which wasto remain with me — when your ability to do your job dependson up—to-date information being available at all times, makesure that you enter any corrections or alterations to thatinformation as soon as they are notified!

WorldWriting to The World Wireless Beacon,R.J. ‘Rich’ Ostrowski, NZNA, a seago-ing Radio Officer home on vacation, re-ports: “Listening to SOOkHz may seemfrustrating at times when you are shore—based and don’t have a large verticalantenna and ground system to go alongwith your MF receiver. I’m saying thisis part of the problem that ‘listener sta—

tions’ have here in the USA and sincemany are located well inland or near alarge city creating receiver desense.

“Although 500kHz is still monitoredby ships that carry R/Os, their life isnow geared towards the operation of theship’ 5 satellite terminal. The former CWdeparture and arrival traffic (TRs) thatwas sent to the local coast station isgone, replaced by modern methods.

“For the most part, this is all truehere in the US. The Canadians are stillquite active on 500 and there is someactivity around Europe...

“When you sail east of Italy in theMediterranean,and into the Indian Oceanand eastward to Japan, in my opinionthings really liven up where marine CWis concerned.

“The Third World is alive and wellon 500 as are its ships. Weather is onlyobtained in India via CW on MF andHF... I might add that the only WXbeing sent in the Mediterranean area ison CW by Italian coast station IAR

(Rome Radio). They have two skeds inthe morning and one broadcast is quitelong. They like CW and do a lot of HFtraffic as well...

“There is one overlooked place tofind a lot of CW activity, but you willnot be able to hear it over here. I hearwhat seem to be thousands of stationson HF all over the place, in between theregular commercial segments, comingfrom the area of China, but I’m not sure.It is not in English, but sounds likeevery little village has a CW station —

you can take it from there, and that isonly my observation...

“On HF there is a fair amount ofSITOR traffic and at half the cost ofsatellite communications. In the futureSITOR will come on line stronger and itwill be the replacement mode for CW aswe go into the next century...”

Rich comments that although the bulkof the traffic once handled on CW byships of the industrialised countries isnow handled via satellite, Third Worldcountries will hang on to maritime CWin spite of the change—over to GMDSSon 2 February 1999.(Condensedfrom a report in The WorldWireless Beacon, June 1996, Newsletterof the Society ofWireless Pioneers.)

Morse Still Used in the Royal AirForce

In MM45 we reported that the Ministryof Defence was advertising for an In-

structional Officer to teach telecommu—nications procedures and transmittingand receiving Morse code, at 18 wpm, atthe No.1 Radio School at RAF Locking.

MM subsequently made enquiriesabout the present—day training for, anduse of Morse in the Royal Air Force,and received the following reply fromSquadron Leader M.J. Brackpool, Head-quarters Logistics Command, RAFBrampton, Cambridgeshire.

“I can confirm that Morse still hasa place in telecommunications in theRoyal Air Force. Selected members ofthe Telecommunications Operator andController trades complete a 13 weekcourse at No 1 Radio School Lockingwhich has a passing out speed of 18

words a minute.“During this course they are also

taught military procedures, equipmentsand, of course, safety procedures. Oncequalified, they will use their skills onvarious ground—to—ground and ground-to-air circuits at RAF bases throughoutthe world. I regret that because of therequirement for security, I am unable toprovide any further details at this time.”

Russian SOSScottish newspapers of June 29, report—ed a Russian cruise liner in difficulties 5miles off Peterhead the previous day.Stonehaven Radio had alerted AberdeenCoastguard to the Alla Tarasova in dis-tress off Peterhead, after receiving anSOS in Morse code at dawn on the 28th.

The liner, chartered by Toronto-basedMarine Expeditions, with 71 passengersand 68 crew on board, had lost enginepower and was drifting out of control.Lifeboats from Peterhead, Fraserburgh

and Aberdeen, and two other vessels inthe area, plus four RAF helicopters, stoodby until power was eventually restoredand the ship made her way to Peterhead.(Thanks to John Nicholson GMOMFEand Jon Oates GMOVIonr sendingpresscuttings about this incident.)

GMDSS ProblemsBBC TV News on July 16 reported thatat present the GMDSS system is in astate of near collapse. The bulletinclaimed that more than 95 percent ofdistress calls received are now false. Thereasons given range from unskilled per-sonnel incorrectly operating the equip—

ment to amateur yachtsmen storingdistress beacons ‘the right way up’ intheir garages. According to the report,Falmouth Coast Guard, alone, received959 false calls in the last 12 months.

It was reported that training is fall—

ing behind and proving far more diffi-cult than expected. This applied to bothoperators and to skilledmaintenance per-sonnel. Additionally,the supplyof equip-ment from manufacturers is well behindschedule.

Perhaps of most importance to thesystem, the provision and maintenanceof the large and highly skilled inspector—ate required to monitor the system andenforce standards is proving almost im-possible.(Report submitted by Gus Taylor G8PG)

QRPers Troubled by DKOWCYWriting in Sprat (Summer 1996), jour-nal of the G-QRP club, the club’s Chair—man, Dr Gordon J. Bennett G3DNF,reports on difficulties that QRP (lowpower) amateur CW enthusiasts can

experience when operating in thefrequency segment 3560 i5kHz usedby many QRPers.

The problem is the amateur radio bea-con DKOWCY which transmits generalpropagation data on 3557.5kHz to anearly morning and late afternoon sched—ule. The main beacon frequency is10.144MH2 but it has also been trans-mitting in the 80m band for the last twoyears because of poor reception of themain beacon frequency in Europe whilesolar activity is so low. It appears fromcorrespondence between G3DNL andDLlVDL (DARC HF Manager), whoruns the beacon project, that the 80mfrequency was internationally agreed andallocated by the German licensing au-thority and cannot be changed.

For QRPers who operate in the samepart of the 80m band this has been anunfortunate development. When, inNovember 1995, the beacon drifted off

frequency, to 3559kHz, and developeda T7 note, complaints were lodged withGermany’s national radio society, theDeutscherAmateurRadio Club (DARC),who operate the beacon with the ap—

proval of the International AmateurRadio Union (IARU).

The beacon has since been kept to itsassigned frequency and has been repro—grammed to a new format and faster mes-sage speed but, says G3DNF, “its notecould still be improved.” Moreover, hereports, a promise to close the beacondown during major contests and QRPevents has proved worthless.

The situation has now become some—what heated. In the February 1996 issueof the German magazine CQ-DL,DLlVDL issued a statement to the cf-

fect that the G-QRP Club wants the seg-ment around 3560kHz to be QRM (in—

terference) free, and that CW QRPersare opposed to progress and use anti—

quated technology. G3DNF feels that itis a pity that the discussion has beendegraded in this way but, he says, it isclear that the time has come to make thefacts available to a wider audience.

He says, “It is true that 3560kHz,like all other internationally recognisedQRP frequencies, has no status in bandplans. We cannot therefore lay claim toit or its adjacent segment as DLlVDLbelieves we are doing. So far as the seg—ment 3560 iSkHz is concerned, all thatwe QRPers are saying is that anyonewanting to find us should look there.

“In among the QRM from commer—cial stations, ‘fishfone’ and other non-amateur stations, there is a higherprobability of finding QRP CW activitythere than elsewhere in the band. To thelist of other likely sources of interfer-ence, we must now add DKOWCY. Thisreduces our options in what is often acrowded segment...

“We can only hope that DARC andtheir licensing officials can assignDKOWCY to a part of the band that ismore suited for beacon operations. Re—

grettably, band planning prescribes nosegment for this purpose, such as is foundon some other bands.

“There is no denying that the beaconfulfils a useful role by providing regularpropagation data, but once the listenerhas absorbed the 25 percent of its mes—

sage that is of real interest, its repeti—tious signals begin to lose appeal.”Finally, G3DNF asks his members: “Isits presence on 3557.5kHz of no con-

Since writing the above article,G3DNF has been advised by the Presi—

dent of AGCW-DI. (Telegraphy Activi—

ty Group — Germany), DLSQE, thatAGCW does not wish to see any signifi-cant change in the current activity of theDKOWCY beacon, and it does not sup-port the protests of the G-QRP Club.

The G-QRP Club has asked the Eu-

ropean CW Association to lend its sup-port to the suggestion that the DKOWCYbeacon be allocated to a less intrusivepart of the 80m CW sub-band.(QRP is a specialised area of amateur .

HAREC for UKBritain’s Radiocommunications Agen-cy has announced its participation in theHarmonised Amateur Radio Examina—

tion Certificate (HAREC) scheme. Be-tween participating countries, it will nowbe a relatively simple matter for radioamateurs to obtain a foreign licence tooperate abroad for periods over threemonths.

Countries which have implementedthe appropriate CEPT Recommendationwill issue on request mutually recog—nised HARECS to those who have passeda relevant national examination. In theUK, a Class B HAREC will be issued toanyone who has passed the Radio Ama-teurs’ Examination (RAE), and a ClassA HAREC will be issued to anyone whohas passed the RAE and the Radio Soci—

ety of Great Britain’s 12 wpm Morsetest.

In addition, any individual who cur-rently holds, or has ever held, a full UKlicence will be eligible to apply, what-ever their original qualifications.

When a stay in any one country islikely to exceed three months, theHAREC can be presented to the relevantAdministration who will issue a renew—able full licence, dependent on the classof HAREC presented. CEPT Recom—mendation T/R 61-01 continues in oper-ation for visits lasting less than threemonths, when amateurs can operate un-der the authority of their home licence.

In the UK, HARECs are available onrequest from the Radiocommunications

The MM Home Page contains infor-mation about MM, including its origins,details of the contents of the current is-sue, extracts from previous issues, de-tails of telegraphy books available fromthe MM Bookshelf, including selectedreviews which have previously appearedin MM, and ‘links’ to other sources oftelegraphic information, products andservices.

The basic idea is to (hopefully) at-tract new readers to MM; also to providea Morse ‘presence’ on the Internetto demonstrate that Morse enthusiastsare able to take advantage of moderntechnology as much as anyone else.

RUFZ Top-List Competition - InfoUpdate

Top-List results, as at July 22, list 208contestants participating from 30 coun-tries. To indicate the range of achieve-ment, the top scorer was DF4PA with71 241 points, and a highest speed of625 symbols per minute. The lowestscore was 551 points, with a highestspeed of 56. This demonstrates onceagain that the competition caters for bothexperts and improvers seeking to im-prove their reading skills.

Make Your Own Solenoid Sounder‘

Jim Farrier, W4FOK, has designed asimple sounder based on a ‘surplus’ so-

lenoid which provides a very reasonablesubstitute for the real instrument. Jim,whose ‘MILL’ program (which includesboth International and American Morse,and the sound of a simulated sounder)was described in MM46, p.43, says:“Some of the people who are interestedin landline telegraphy don’t have sound-ers but aren’t ready to buy a collector’sitem. be built cheaply, I made several differ-ent sounders based on a small $1.00surplus solenoid that I saw advertised.

“One of them, which works quitenicely, is shown in the attached sketch.The solenoid has a resistance of approx-imately 51 ohms and requires an operat-ing voltage of approximately 8 volts,corresponding to a current of about157mA.

“Using a solenoid to implement asounder is so obvious that I’m sure oth—

ers must have thought of it. The ideastruck me when I saw a picture of thesmall push-pull solenoid and thought itmight work.

“However, the solenoid works bestwith a design which has the mechanicaladjustments made at assembly and, inuse, the current is adjusted for properoperation. If the design had to includeall of the adjustments provided in thestandard sounder design, it would berather complicated.”

Radio Officers’ Association ofEurope

The ROAE was inaugurated in Decem—ber 1995 as an association for practisingand retired Radio Officers who haveserved ashore and afloat in the service ofEurope’s merchant marine. In responseto enquiries from around the world, theAssociation now offers membership toall qualified radio officers, regardless ofwhere they trained and served.

Unusual double-contact key with two independent circuits. The non-metallic basemeasures 150mm x 70mm; the non-metallic lever is 120mm long and carries twoconductors, each 110mm long, in parallel. Each contact is 1.5mm diameter and

locates into a small cylinder about 8mm diameter, with a spring inside. After closingthe circuit, the contacts can go down a further 2mm if the lever continues to bepressed. Because of the delay in closing and opening the key it could only havebeen used for slow operating. Possibly the key is intended to switch high currents,but in contradiction of this possibility the screwheadsof the contacts are locatedclose to the small knob with no protection provided against electric shock. The keywas found by DL1BFEon board the last German lightship, Borkumriff, in 1988.

There are no identificationmarks. it appears to be professionally manufactured andlooks as if it was made several decades ago. (See ‘Borkum — First Official Coast

N THE SUMMER OF 1943, at theage of 16, I was employed byWestern Union as a messenger at

Gainesville, Florida, working from Juneuntil early October of that year. Mr GeorgeHack was office manager, a man of smallstature, light hair, round face and slumpedshoulders. He was friendly and was well-liked by the townspeople. On Sundayshe was to be found singing in the FirstBaptist Church Choir. He was also a finetelegrapher.

Pat Winstead was assistant manager.She was short and plump. with greyingblack hair. Her job included the routing oftelegrams to the messengers. explainingto them procedures or special handling.This was during World War II, and deathmessages were received almost daily.

Pat expected quite a lot from themessengers, but I got along with her verywell. Once, when a little irritated with meover some matter, she remarked ‘Whenthis war (boom) is over, I’ll rememberwho to hire when everyone wants ajob.’ Imention this because it was characteristicof Pat. The next day the incident wasentirely forgotten. Like Mr Hack, Pat wasa fine telegrapher.

Lois LaPlant was the evening man«ager. She did most of the office account—ing. She was an attractive, well dressed,middle—aged lady, and was friendly toeveryone. She too was a fine telegrapher.

Sarah Peacock, an attractive redheadfrom Quincy. was counter clerk. She re—

ceived telegrams and money orders overthe counter for transmittal. Sarah was a

pleasant and sweet girl and we all likedher. She was not a telegrapher, but helpedoperate the two teletype machines thatwere in operation at that time.

I cannot recall the name of the firsttrick messenger. He was a large. ruddy,auburn—haired individual and was the onlyone of us who wore uniform. I reportedfor duty at 10:00 am, two or more hoursafter he did, to help during the busy timeof day.

I was not required to wear a uniform,and that pleased me because uniforms werehot and made one perspire heavily riding abicycle during the summer months. Wefurnished our own bikes, and Mr Hacksold tubes and tires to us at reduced price.

Mr Gillespie was an older gentlemanwho delivered telegrams, on foot, to thedowntown business centre of Gainesville.He had a slight limp, but was faithfulto his job. We all liked this older manwho was still making his own way in theworld and was grateful for a job until thewar was over.

‘Sunshine’ Brewer was WesternUnion Lineman. Often he sat on the mes—

senger’s bench awaiting a call to deal withsome trouble. He would go out, regardless

Morse KeyTensioners

DENNIS GOACHER, G3LLZ, HASPREPARED a l4—page catalogue depict-ing the types of springs used to controlthe action of Morse key arms (levers)over the years. He has studied drawingsand photographs and examined manytypes of key to produce this list, but is atpains to stress that it is not exhaustive.

He continues to search for furthertypes and invites readers of his bookletto contact him if they know of otherswhich should be included in an updatedversion at a later date.

Having said that, he has produced acomprehensive list which will be invalu-able to key collectors in describing andcataloguingtheir keys. He identifieseightdifferent basic types, namely: Tension;Compression; Compression Conical;Compression Hairpin; Flat Moving withthe Arm; Flat Fixed to the Base; Flat,Semi—HairPin; and Torsion.

Within these types, he has identifiedtwelve different styles, ranging from Al—

fred Vail’s original key of 1844, throughvarious styles of the Victorian era up toand including those of the present day.He has numbered these styles so thatcorrespondentsdescribing their unknownkeys (particularly if they are sendingdetails to MM!) can identify the springaction as, for instance, ‘G3LLZStyle 7’.

lar booklet describingpivot arrangementsfor keys. Such a publication linked withthe ‘Tensioner’ booklet will provide a

HERE CAN BE VERY FEWOPERATORS, either amateur orprofessional, who do not remem—

ber their first QSO. I certainly do. It wasa disaster.

I had just obtained my First ClassPMG Marine Certificate after spendingsome two years at a well-known LondonRadio College. Two years in which themysteries of electricity and radio hadbeen hammered into us, along with in-terminable hours ofMorse practice, wire—less procedure etc., etc.

Now, according to the wording inthe red passport—like document, I wasdeemed capable, amongst other things,of working in Morse at a speed of 25words per minute — or so it said!

at some length what Iwould be required todo while on watch.

I had been sittingfor some time in thewireless room withthe receiver switchedon listening to thebabel of sound whichonly 500kHz canproduce during asingle—operatorperiod(ships havingonly oneoperator keep radiowatch for four two-

hour periods daily, with a two-hourbreak between periods), when I noticedMacNab standing just inside the doorwatching me.

they never teach you anything in thatradio school of yours?”. I must havelooked blank as he went on. “Did theynever tell you anything about sendinga TR?” Now the penny dropped. Ofcourse. As soon as a ship leaves port itshould notify the nearest coast station ofthe fact.

For the benefit of non—marine opera—tors I should point out that TR (thoughtto stand for TelegraphRush) is a short sig-nal sent by a ship to acoast station givingthe ship’s name, nextport of call, and posi-tion, to enable anyradio traffic addressedto the ship to be for-warded via the mostadvantageously situ—

ated coast station.TRs received at coaststations from ocean-going ships are auto—

matically forwarded by them to Lloydsfor that organisation’s shipping intelli—

gence.I must have continued to look stupid.

“Well, come on then”, MacNab said,“We’re almost coming up to the Norenow”. With growing apprehension I

began to realise that he meant I shouldactually start up the transmitter and makea call.

Cacophony of GruntsMe, live, on the air. This was not

how it had been describedat radio school.We had been led to believe that first trip

juniors were broken in gently, with sometime elapsing before being allowed onthe key. MacNab obviously believed intossing his juniors in at the deep endimmediately.

Slowly I drew the motor startinghandle over the studs. Miraculously, itseemed, the large spherical valves onthe MF transmitter glowed into life.Somehow I remembered to check thatthe settings were correct for SOOkHz,and that the aerial switch was in the

right position. All thetime I was desperate—ly trying to pick outGNF (NorthForelandRadio) from the ca-cophony of grunts,whistles and raspswhich filled myphones.

I glanced at theclock. No way outthere. It still neededa good ten minutesto the next silenceperiod. I looked

round at MacNab once more, and withsweating hand reached out for the keyand tentatively called GNF.

more I called, panic rising. Still no reply— what was I doing wrong? Now Mac—

Somehow, I managed to catch what Ithought was my callsign followed by ameaninglessjumble of symbols,but therewas no mistaking the final impatient KK K. With a damp nervous paw oncemore on the key, I carefully sent “GNFde GRNW TR CORFU QTO TILBURYBND GIBRALTAR QRU IMI QRU +".

They Can always Tell!Again the loud crashing note from

which I managed to decipher “AT LASTR RTR QRU GA +”.

I fiopped back in the chair with re-lief. Glancing up I was just in time tocatch a ghost of a smile on MacNab’sdour face.

“Not to worry”, he said reassuringly,“They can always tell a first tripper andsometimes try to take the mickey a bit.Don’t worry about it. In a little whileyou’ll give as good as you get. Don’tforget to enter it in the log.” With that,he left me to get on with it. MM

HERE IS, AT THE SAME TIME,a central in the Paris region assecret, exclusive, and efficient as

the London home station. Although ithas the same cloistered library atmos—

phere, the equipment is different.Attached to each receiver are a tele—

vision-like cathode—ray tube and atelephone. Three hundred receivershum softly while 300 screens emit acold greenish glow as they constantlymonitor 30 000 frequencies between 10

kilocycles and 30 megacycles.These ultra-modern receivers are

called ‘panoramic’ receivers. This meansthat each cathode screen gives an in-stantaneous picture of all radio traffic ona band 100 kilocycles wide. Each sta-tion shows up as a luminous spot. Thescreen is graduated in kilocycles, andeach operator has a list of frequenciesused by stations that are under Germancontrol or are abroad. Therefore, anyspot suddenly appearing outside of theseknown frequencies unquestionably rep—

resents a suspicious station, which verylikely is clandestine.

It is 10:25 pm. A spot has just light—ed up on one of the screens. quency on a Telefunken. A round cath—

ode-ray screen, with a compass rosemarked on its periphery, is attached tothe set. A lighted beam instantly springsout from the centre of the screen, indi-cating an extremely precise azimuth, ordirection.

It is 10:27 pm. Brest, Augsburg, andNuremberg relay their 3 azimuths to theoperations room, where they materialiseas threads on a huge wall map ofEurope, extending from the 3 goni-ometric bases and crossing to form atriangle with sides about 10 miles long.

The unknown station is located inthe operations zone of the Clermont—Ferrand mobile regional base in centralFrance. It is 10:34.

The operations room radios theClermont base and gives the suspectedfrequency and the position-finding co-ordinates. Clermont acknowledges themessage and calls the garage. Two front-wheel-drive Citroén lls, each equippedwith 4 civilians carrying machine pis-tols, and two 4—seater Mercedes-Benzconvertibles with fake French licence

plates, dash off. The receivers inside thevehicles are quickly set on 3465 kilo-hertz. It is 10:39. The clandestine radiooperator ended his transmission 9 min-utes ago. The frequency is quiet. Only ateasing background noise reaches the re-ceiver headphones.

Nevertheless, the vehicles move to—

ward the intersecting points of the posi—

tion-finding triangle, lie in wait at roadcrossings, and stay on the lookout. Theyconstantly communicate by radio amongthemselves and with their commandpost,which has just signalled that the unkownis waiting for a reply from his homestation. If the clandestine operator hadincautiously communicated again withhis base, he would have been done for.

The technical teams in the two Mer-cedes wait anxiously. At 11:40, the re—

sponsefromLondon arrives.The rotatingaerials are ready for a final survey. TheCitroens rev up their motors for the hunt.

At 11:42, the clandestine station re—

plies: “QSL AR”. The transmission lastsless than 3 seconds — not enough timeto determine the station’s position. Thecars return empty-handed.

From this point on, however, Cler-mont has this frequency surveilled bypatrol cars prowling the edges of thesuspect triangle. With any new trans—mission from the clandestine outstation,the cars would situate their prey within anew, smaller triangle with sides half amile long.

Meanwhile, the magnetic wire whichrecorded the messages is sent to thecryptanalytic service. With the help ofelectromechanical equipment, the serv-ice determines within a few minutes ifthe texts are in an unbreakable system or

not. If the messages cannot be solved,the order is sent to Clermont to liquidatethe outstation immediately. This outsta—tion is extremely dangerous and nothingcan be learned from analysing its traffic.On the other hand, if the services uncover some weaknesses, the code willundoubtedly be broken within the com-ing days or weeks. Clermont is orderedto watch the transmission site discreetlyand allow it to operate for the time beingso that, when the time comes, the entirenetwork can be hauled in.

If the RHSA is relentless and theradio operator persists in transmittingfrom the same place, he soon becomes avictim of a man who is looking at thewatchlike dial on his wrist of his field—

strength meter.When the suspect area is reduced to

a triangle of 200 yards on a side by theMercedes, to which has been added, forclosing—in operations, a small deliverytruck covered with a tarpaulin, thesevehicles are replaced by some harmless—looking pedestrians wearing bulky rain—

coats to hide their reassuring ‘bon vivant’stoutness. These pedestrians appear tobe late, because they walk quickly whilelooking at their ‘wristwatches’. Theirstoutness conceals an extremely sensi—

tive field-strength meter. The dial of thewristwatch is a measuring scale whosehand movements tell a Gestapo agentwhether he is getting warm or cold. Twoor three men, each with one hand in apocket, follow each pedestrian. Onepedestrian suddenly disappears into abuilding. The group marches after him.A car stops next to the sidewalk theradio operator is done for.

The First Phase ofPosition-Finding(see facing page)

Fourth and Final Phase (see opposite)The final phase of approach is made with the field monitor in the ZOO-yard zone definedby the thirdphase. Pedestrians equipped with miniature field-strength meters andwalking down the main street of the area discover the transmitter inside the buildingindicated in grey. The operator is in immediate danger. If the troops have set upbarricades, he is practically lost. Towards the end of 1943, the operating scheduleshandedover to each operator were, in theory, to prevent the fourth phase of position-finding from taking place.

If he had time to swallow his poisontablet, the removal of the body is verydiscreet. If the tenants notice anything,the men say that their neighbour has justbeen arrested for dealing on the blackmarket. If shots are exchanged, the nextday the paper runs a short article tellingthat a dangerous repeat offender shot atpolice who had come to arrest him andthat the police had killed him.

We have just described the direc—

tion—findingmethod employed at the be-ginning of 1943. This method, almostcompletely automated through electron-ics, was even then highly perfected.

Let’ s summarise the times required:

In 1943, one could drive throughParis, north to south, in less than 10minutes. Therefore, if a transmitter isoperating for the first time, a direction—

finding vehicle can be within sight ofthe station in less than a half hour afterits first signal.

For subsequent transmissions, theParis central would transmit the frequen—cy directly to the mobile base to reducethe time involved.

minutes.It is likely that by the spring of 1944

the Germans were using a completelyautomateddirection—finding system,evenin the vehicles. This was achieved by acathode—ray screen. With this system, itis very likely that the 3—second acknowl—

edgement transmission from the clan-destine operator to the home stationwould have given an azimuth with anapproximation of about 5 degrees. Thiswould have enabled localisation withina circle of a radius of half a mile.

But no automation, however ad—

vanced, would reduce the length of thefinal closing—in with the field—strength

monitor. This might have lasted a longtime in a city and thereby risked attract—ing the attention of the lookout or guardswho surroundedthe radio operator when—ever feasible.

By establishing 5 minutes as the max-imum for a transmission on a given fre-quency, the SOE gave its radio operatorsthe greatest chance to avoid capture.

Transmission lengthhad certainly notbeen determined by mere estimation.Secret documents which were distribut-ed to the clandestine operators in 1943,used for this study, prove that the pene—tration agents of the Intelligence Serviceand the Service des Renseignementswere completely up-to—date on the en-tire German disposition from December1942, even knowing the licence-platenumbers of the reconnaissance cars.

German detection methods had madedecisive progress in two years. In 1941and 1942, the localisation of a clandes—tine station was extremely difficult. Itcould only be carried out if the operatortransmittedon the same days of the week,from the same site, and on the samefrequency during several consecutivehours. Direction—finding operations werenot yet automatic, and panoramic recep-tion was nonexistent. The scanning ofall usable frequencies was necessarilyvery slow and left substantial gaps.

In addition, during the final approach,each Gestapo agent had to hide a heavysuitcase containing a receiverwith a loopaerial under his coat. A Tirolean cap orBasque beret tilting down over his earjust barely hid an earphone. Their gen—eral posture aroused the curiosity of eventhe most naive of passers-by.

The arrest of a radio operator thusoften required long months of continualsurveillance. The operation was compli-cated by the fact that if a clandestineoperator was spotted in the unoccupiedzone of France (controlled by Vichy),the Germans could only signal the sus—

pect frequency to the French radio con-trol group at Hauterive near Vichy. Thelatter promised to look into the matter,but secretly warned the clandestine sta—

tion to move as quickly as possible, andthen supplied the Germans with an al-most completely false position.

HAVE BEEN WORKINGfor the last year on ahistory of keyers and

paddles. I consider a ‘keyer’ to bea mechanicalor electrical keyingdevice that is manipulated to sendMorse code. Most early keyersstarted out as home-brewcreations and were written up inham magazines of the day. Somewent into production.The earliest keyer that I can findthat meets this definition is theMotokey, manufactured byHowardMason of Seattle,Washington.The only mention ofit was in an April 1939 QSTarticle, as follows (they wronglyspelled the name):

New Keying DeviceDashes, as well as dots are formedautomatically by the Mote-Key, a newkeying device which fits in betweenthe semi—automatic key or ‘bug’ andthe fully automatic tape transmitter.The Moto—Key mechanism includes

a lOO—voltAC induction motor whichis geared throughsuitable speed—chang-ing cones to a spindle carrying twopairs of friction discs. Associated withthese discs or clutches are two cams,one for sending dots and spaces andone for sending dashes and spaces.

One or other of these cams is re—

leased to revolve by pressing the oper—

Motokey is DifferentThe instructions for using this in—

strument, headed ‘Learning To Sendwiththe Motokey’, read as follows:

‘Motokey is different. Proficiencyand skill can be gained with it mostquickly by first discardingold ideas about“brass-pounding” and starting anew.

The main difference is this; whileother keys use hand power for operatingand closing the contacts, Motokey doesthis with motor power. The operatormerely works the controls. It is a mod—

ern sending machine.Let us compare Motokey with an or-

dinary key (see table below).

Practice First‘With Motokey all parts of a letter

are determined mechanically, appearingas they would from a tape; only thespaces between words and letters aredetermined manually.

Remember when you first learned tosend on a straight key? It took a goodmany hours of practice. Then it tookmore practice yet to learn how to handlea “bug”. It will require a few additionalhours to master Motokey. If you are al-ready a fairly fast operator, and have agood sense of what constitutes properspacing and timing, whether you’ve useda “bug” or not, you should be able to put

With your Motokey connected to acouple of dry cells, a buzzer, and a pairof phones, start the motor and begin. Setthe speed control for the lowest speed,by turning the speed control knob to theleft as far as it will go.

After a little practice you will noticeseveral things that are different fromwhat you have been used to. It will seemthat there is a time lag between depress-ing the lever and the resultant signal.There is, because the machine sends thespace before it sends the dot or dash.’

Common IrregularitiesEliminated‘It seems that all operators have

irregularities in their sending that maycause some trouble in ironing out. Itis common for operators to undulylengthen the dash of the “D” in “DE”,the second dash of a “",G the last dashof a “Y”, and others. Some lengthen thelast dash of a letter when it precedes aletter beginning with dots, such as the“O” of “OFF", the “M” of “MFD”, etc.

This you cannot do on Motokey. Infact Motokey is in itself such a goodteacher of code that if you try a straightkey after you’ve mastered Motokey youwill find yourself sending practically per-fect code. You will also note, in practis—ing, that no matter how hard you try torun a dot and dash together, the inter-lock will hold back and not send thedash before the dot and proper space hasbeen sent, and similarly for a dash anddot.’

Concentrate on Spacing‘You will find that you can disregard

entirely the length of dashes and dots,and concentrate on letter spacing andword spacing. The popular idea that thetelegraph code consists of dots and dash—

es is not entirely correct. It consists ofdots, dashes, and spaces.

Remember that only the quickest im—pulse releases the mechanism for a dotor dash and you can then quickly getover on the other side for the next dot ordash, which will be held by the interlockuntil the proper moment. For the inter-lock to function right, you must crowdyour sending somewhat, that is, send ata speed a little faster than that for whichthe machine is set.

You will find that you must sendalong at a steady rate. This is somethingnew and must be acquired, but it gives awonderful evenness to your sending.’

Howard MasonAt the time of production Howard

Mason was employed by the PugetSound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton,Washington. He designed and built theMotokey at his home. The aluminiumbase was cast at a foundry in Ballard,Washington, and he did all the machinework on the rest of the key. He pur—chased the gears from the Boston KeyCompany.

In fact, there were only three Moto—keys made. The first was sold to a manin Bremerton, as a result of the article inQST. The second was sold to me, andHoward still has the third.

To say that Howard Mason led aninteresting life would be a gross under-statement! He was born in Indiana, and

HEN THEFATEFULcampaignof France ended in the disasterof June 1940, the French ‘SR’

(Espionage and counter—espionage sec—

tions — see below*) was intact and itscypher department, headed by Colonel(later General) Bertrand was secretly in—

stalled in an old castle near Uzs in theRhone valley since the Germans hadbeen ill—advised enough not to occupythe whole French territory.

This department was considered themost important by the SIS and a perma—nent Clandestine secure radio link wasestablished between Uzs and BletchleyPark as soon as an armistice had beensigned between France and Germany.

The French ‘Y’ service (which inter—

cepted German HF and landlinc trans-missions throughout occupied France)was particularly busy with the help ofeminent Polish mathematiciansand cryp—

tanalysts rescued from the Germansat the last moment. Their job was thedecryption of intercepted ‘Enigma’messages and the transmission of thecontents direct to Bletchley Park (BP),where Bertrand had sent some Frenchcryptologist officers when the collapseof France was imminent.

Secure LinkIronically, the link between Uzs and

BP was kept secure thanks to copies ofGerman ‘Enigma’ machines manufac—

tured in France and the UK at the begin—ning of the war after the invasion of

This service maddened the Germanswith its ‘total inefficiency’. True, radioD/Fs were dutifully reported to the Ger-man Armistice Commission, but withfalse bearings. In the meantime, discreetmessages were forwarded to the ‘offend-ers’ to be more careful in the future.

Destroy Immediately...But nothing much could be done for

Bertrand’s link which had to be keptgoing ceaselessly, day after day, withhigh power transmitters. Their intenseactivity was of course monitored by theD/F stations in Germany; they ‘local-ised’ a large triangle in Vichy Francenear theMassif Central, but nothing defi-nite.

False BearingThe Germans gave us the numbers

of their vehicle registration plates (whichproved extremely useful since warningscould be sent to all clandestine stations)and accepted that a French police officerwould join them aboard one of their lor—

company the Gestapo party, guide themthrough the sinuous roads of the MassifCentral, and report what he could to hischief in Vichy as soon as possible.

After Hauterive Control had given afirst false bearing, a hundred miles northof Uzs, off went the little D/F party insearch of the mysterious signals. Tonythen made friends in the car with a Ger-man who was a police officer stationedin Berlin before the war.

Sometimes they talked shop togetherin French, and Tony learned that theGerman D/F service at that time was farfrom efficient with old radio sets. (Itwas to become really dangerous in 1943—44 with the advent of new high-sensitiv-ity panoramic receivers). So Tony didhis best to send the little convoy on awild goose chase. One day, over a badmountain road, the car in which Tonywas seated upturned in a ditch. One Ger-man was badly wounded, Tony was un-hurt and succeeded in stealing parts ofthe goniometric loop.

. Arrest ImminentThe hunt at last came to an end, the

D/F cars being unable to find a thirdbase to the estimated triangle. The Ger—

man Police Inspector briefly warnedTony that he was now suspected by theGestapo team and that his arrest wouldbe imminent. Tony hastily decampedand the German party recrossed the de-marcation line of the Free Zone empty-handed.

Thus, Bertrand’s centre was given arespite until November 1942. When theinformation came that the Germans wereabout to invade the whole French terri-tory, Bertrandhadjust time to close down

his station, and evacuate his archivesand personnel to Algiers in NorthAfrica.

So all is well that ends well, but theFrench ‘Y’ service had to be reorgan—ised on a fully clandestine basis. A high—

ly dangerous mission, all the more sosince the German D/F services were be-coming really sophisticated.

However, even with up-to-date D/Fapparatus, the capture of a clandestineoperator is not as simple as that: theoryand practice are a world apart... espe-

cially when someone like Tony sets outto frustrate the system!

ly moved to Eagle Harbor, Washington,when he was five years old. He had anearly interest in radio and was licensedas an amateur radio operator (7BK) in1917. In the early 1920s he worked onthe American Radio Relay League Staffand knew Hiram Percy Maxim.

He served as a radio operator in the1927 Detroit News Arctic Expedition.During this expedition he operatedstation KFZG from Barrow, Alaska, insupport of Arctic overflights. (See‘An Arctic Adventure’, by Howard F.Mason, QST, October 1927.)

He also served with Richard Byrdas one of five radio operators in the1928—1930 ‘Little America’ Antarcticexpedition. (See ‘Radio on the ByrdExpedition’, QST, December 1928.)

In 1994, Howard Mason donated tome the Kilboume Clark key he used atstation WFA in Little America. I havedesignated it the ‘WFA Key’ and havedesigned a special certificate to confirmcontacts made on the amateur bands us—

ing this historical instrument. Certificatenumber 1 (which went to my father,N7EYO) is illustrated on the back coverof this issue of MM.

Memory of Centennial ofFirst Morse Message

The report on the home of SamuelF.B. Morse in Poughkeepsie, NY, inMM46 (page 7), brought back a child—hood memory which I thought I wouldshare with you.

In 1944 I was a kid growing up in anindustrial section of East Baltimore notfar from the Mount Claire shops of theBaltimore and Ohio Railroad. Morse’soriginal (1844) telegraph line ran fromthe little station at the shop along theright of way of the railroad to Washing-ton, DC, and terminated at the Capitol.

portance of his accomplishment was rec—

ognised and the transmission of the firstmessage was repeated on the centennialdate. My school was nearby and a group

of students were allowed to attend theevent.

Replicas of the original equipmentwere used for the demonstration and I

can still remember what a profound ef-fect seeing this re-enactment of the dawnof electronic communication had on me.It kindled my interest in science and isresponsible for a lifelong interest in CWwhich has enriched my life through con—

tacts with a variety of people who enjoya common interest in this remarkablemode of communication.

other mystery! I have long pondered theorigin of a beautifully made little brasskey mounted on an octagonal ebonitebase which I found in a local antique/junk shop last year.

Inside the back cover of MM46 I

found it, at the top of Leslie Dixon’s1924 catalogue of WWI surplus items.It is an Army pattern Lucas key, Fig.51KD.

Lambert’s KeyThe object shown at the top of page 41of MM46 is a Lambert’s Discharge Key,designed to have a long leakage path toearth and thus a very high insulation

resistance. It was used in the submarinecable service and at cable manufacturerspremises for insulation testing.

As good cables would have an insu—

lation resistance of many megohms itwas important that leakage to earth inthe test set itself did not invalidate theresults. It was not used for sending traf—

fic, although other types of key could beused both for testing and communicat—ing with the distant terminal station us-ing ‘cablecode’. Sometimes these keyscan be found in junk shops and look liketwo Morse keys on one base.

Cablecode was a modified Morsewith equal length elements and two po-larities to distinguish ‘dot’ (negative toline) from ‘dash’ (equal length to dotbut positive to line).

We have examples of the above andmany other types of key, plus workingMorse inkers, needle instruments, two—

tone transmitters, automatic Morse tapereaders, and much else of interest toMMreaders at the Porthcumo TelegraphMuseum.
