Absolute Rule!!!Mixed numbers must be converted to
Improper Fractions!Step 1: Change all mixed numbers to improper
fractions.
Step 2: Top x Top, Bottom x Bottom.
Step 2b: CANCEL! Canceling is dividing a numerator and a denominator by a common factor. Cancel before multiplying!
Step 3: Simplify! Simplify! Simplify!

How do I know to multiply?• Look for the normal signs. x ; • ; ( )( )
• Look for the word, ‘of’, or ‘out of’. When you want part of the whole, you multiply the two fractions/ mixed numbers.
• When modeling multiplication of fractions, look for:– The fraction represented by the column– The fraction represented by the row– The double shaded region over the total
number of squares is your answer.
