A High Potency Multi-Nutrient Formula for Energy Support

1

There are so many reasons why people have low energy and too many options to offer them that you may struggle to know where to begin! Often our answer is to start with a good multivit. . . and what better place to start!

The MultiPlus range is a series of iron-free, multi-nutrients with botanicals for specific support. In this presentation we use the MultiPlus Energy as the guide product as we look at the important nutrients and compounds involved in energy production. We will also look at the anatomy and physiology of energy production and finish with some of the other supportive products.

2

• There may be underlying medical causes for prolonged fatigue - consider dietary and lifestyle factors

• Physical exertion can also affect energy levels

• Our energy needs are for both physical and mental activityEvery cell requires energy in order to function and some need more than others• the heart beats continuously • detoxification through the liver and kidneys• connective tissue repair • the digestive system uses a lot of energy! • the immune system which fights for us minute by minute• the brain needs energy for cognitive function i.e., language, problem solving, decision

making

• Mental fatigue impacts you physically and vice versa • As we consider the provision of energy through diet we will also look at the

mechanism by which we produce that energy and the influences we can have on it with supplementation . . . . .

3

There’s nothing new in research that tells us to eat more fruit and veg – we all know the health benefits – but this study links an increased intake with increased longevity. Although not currently adopted, some researchers are calling on an increase of fruit and vegetables in the diet over an above the current recommended 5 a day.

4

The wholefoods energy-rich complex in the Multiplus range is an excellent way of supplementing the diet with a daily dose of those foods and all the natural goodness they provide like amino acids and lipids, enzymes and phytonutrients found in abundance in fruit and vegetables.

5

The addition of the Wholefood complex is not to replace a healthy diet. It is important to include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables daily.• Polyphenols found particularly in fruits - support vascular structure and function

along with their ability to reduce stickiness of the blood improves circulation. • Carotenoids are fat soluble pigments and they play a part in cell communication

which is an important role and includes cellular energy production too.

6

MultiPlus range is based on a multivitamin and mineral complex. • The zinc manganese magnesium and chromium levels are important because of their

role in blood sugar regulation which impacts on cellular energy production• the B vitamins play their role in the energy cycle

We also have the energy support complex . . . . 215mg of a mix of botanical extracts

7

• The benefits of the nutrients in this MultiPlus formula are enhanced by a botanical complex of some natural sources of caffeine

• These botanicals also have other actions which support energy

8

• Protein can be used as a fuel source but not ideal as primary function of protein is the production of brain chemicals, hormones and enzymes as well as the growth and repair of the body

• Body needs continuous energy – even at rest or sleeping, the cells require energy to facilitate the functions they must perform

• The body requires a suitable amount of sleep in order to catch up on all that maintenance work and recharge the batteries. Typically around 8 hours sleep

• The active vs inactive person - Some form of physical activity should be included in the day to keep the body strong and responsive, reducing atrophy of the muscles and being less prone to fatigue.

• Being active helps maintain a healthy body weight as carrying excess weight can lead to fatigue.

• Exercise also improves our circulation and increases the blood flow round the body. . .so our cells are receiving the nutrients but also the oxygen needed to produce energy .

For more information on weight management, please see the Thermogenic complex e-learning programme.

9

• The diagram on the left shows a cross section through a human cell and its contents.. . . focusing on are the mitochondria (shown in blue)

• In the diagram on the right a single mitochondrion has been enlarged • Power-stations burn fuel to produce power. Mitochondria are the power stations of

the cells and burn foods for fuel to grow, repair and function. • Fats and carbohydrate are metabolised or ‘burned’ in the presence of oxygen, that is

aerobically, to produce energy in the form of ATP. • If there is not enough oxygen (anaerobic) . . ... .there is less energy being produced =

lower energy production & more lactic acid (contributing to aching, muscles after exercise).

So:• eat the right foods, • sleep well • allow our body time to rest and recuperate• ensure we have a more active lifestyle

10

11

This is a simplified diagram showing energy metabolism inside the

mitochondria.

1. Protein fats and carbohydrates entering through the diet and are

broken down into amino acids, glucose and fatty acids.

2. Fats and carbs, and amino acids, feed into the Krebs cycle. The

nutrients required to facilitate all these pathways into the Krebs cycle

are marked in red. Our justification for often recommending a

multivitamin for energy is highlighted here with the inclusion of B

vitamins, magnesium, zinc and manganese plus iron, sulphur and

copper –Solgar MultiPlus Energy is well on the way to meeting those

requirements.

3. The electron transport chain is where energy is produced in the form of

ATP - an energy storage molecule like a battery . It is reliant nutrients

including on coenzyme Q10.

4. CoQ10 has a few different forms which it cycles through during the

production of ATP.

If you would like more about CoQ10 our eLearning presentation on the

MultiPlus with Cardio Health Essentials highlights both forms in more

detail.

• Energy production is going on all the time but sometimes the body needs to increase it energy output i.e. raise the metabolic rate to meet additional demands. . .this is called thermogenesis.

• Thermogenesis is controlled by the brown fat cells found lining the internal walls of the abdomen and round some of the organs.

12

• Thermogenesis is directly related to the metabolic rate. Brown fat contains significantly more mitochondria than white fat.

• The colour of brown fat is derived from highly pigmented chemicals contained within the mitochondria. These chemicals that enable mitochondria to produce heat.

• Brown fat cells therefore are metabolically active - they turn the energy from food into heat.

• When the core temperature of the body is increased, the metabolism is stimulated, which ultimately causes the body to use stored fat in the white fat cells to support the additional energy requirement.i.e. Brown fat cells burn off the white fat cells to produce energy.

*For more detail and further information on thermogenesis and fat burning, look for the Solgar eLearning presentation on the Thermogenic Complex.

13

We have 2 main systems for producing energy . 1. the mitochondria in our body cells using our foods to produce storable energy as ATP 2. the mitochondria in the brown fat cells which turn our foods into heat in order to

burn white fat cells for energy

14

MultiPlus with Energy Essentials is a multivitamin and mineral complex including key nutrients like zinc, manganese, magnesium. . and B vitamins.

The Energy support complex has 215mg of a mix of extracts from green coffee, green tea, yerba mate tea and kola nut and the addition of guarana seeds.. . a range of caffeine-rich botanicals to support our energy needs .

15

• Caffeine is a CNS stimulant - it can cross the blood-brain barrier and once it is inside the brain it blocks the effects of adenosine, a neurotransmitter which promotes sleep.

• stimulating those receptors with caffeine = you feel more alert and focused. • Caution: regular excessive intake can cause several problems including emotional

fatigue, mood swings, depression, anxiety and sleep deprivation . This affects our energy levels.

• Effects of caffeine can take effect within 15 minutes and last 6hrs. Watch your intake of caffeine drinks during the evening if you are looking for a relaxed nights sleep.

16

• Tea typically has one third of the caffeine content of coffee• The actions of caffeine are the same irrespective of the source but it is still important

to note the source of the caffeine as it may contain other less desirable compounds• Coffee, for example, contains methylxanthins which prolong adrenaline effects, can

cause heartburn and contribute to PMS.• Green tea, on the other hand, counters its caffeine with antioxidant polyphenols, the

calminative amino acid theanine and the detoxifying chlorophyll to name but a few. . .

17

• To benefit from the energy stimulating effects of caffeine it is best sourced from a supplement in order to control the dosage more specifically

• the MultiPlus Energy provides caffeine as part of a botanical complex of Green coffee, green tea, Yerba Mate, Guarana and Kola nut providing 100mg caffeine (equivalent of a cup of coffee) over 3 tablets .

18

• Synergy of ingredients support the antioxidant, thermogenic and glycaemic support of the Multiplus with Energy Essentials.

• Exercise produces more free radicals, including those which can damage the mitochondria, . .. . so good to have antioxidant support

• Caffeine contributes to stimulating metabolism but the botanicals in the Energy complex also contribute to stabilising blood sugars and instead of storing those sugars as fat it encourages thermogenesis . . i.e. the breakdown and release of stored fats in order to meet the body’s energy needs.

• Energy support complex works synergistically with the zinc, manganese, magnesium and chromium to balance blood sugar levels which can play a part in fatigue

• Insulin is the hormone responsible for activating glucose uptake by the cells so if those cells are resistant to its action, metabolism of sugars is impaired and so is energy production.

*MultiPlus with Brain Essentials e-learning covers free radicals and antioxidants. *Thermogenic complex e-learning covers blood sugar control and fat metabolism.

19

Rhodiola, CoQ10 and ALA play a fantastic supporting role too and are included in the MultiPlus with Energy Essentials

20

60mg of Q10 50mg alpha lipoic acid and 50mg of standardised Rhodiola extract this energy producing trio are definitely worthy of special notice here.

Coenzyme Q10 is vital for the metabolism of fats and carbs to produce energy.

21

Its worth noting that the manufacture of Q10 can be blocked by some medications. .• statins commonly taken for cholesterol reduction• blood pressure lowering medication such as ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers

and beta blockers• the contraceptive pill• certain antidepressants (tricyclics)

Check if individuals suffering with fatigue may be on such medication - their fatigue may be due to medication which is blocking their production of Q10 Please note that if an individual is on existing medication they should seek advice from their doctor/other health care practitioner before embarking on supplementsThe MultiPlus with Energy essentials contains 60mg of CoQ10; additional supplementation of CoQ10 may be required, depending on their overall health, how much exercise you are doing, age and other needs, for example cardiovascular health.

CoQ10 is fat soluble and has protective benefits for fatty tissues including nerves and blood fats but also the fat soluble nutrients.

22

ALA plays a supportive role in energy production and antioxidant protection. Energy• Alpha Lipoic acid encourages muscle cells to take up more glucose for energy

production and decreases the storage of glucose as fat• If you increase your exercise you may need to supplement further - the increased

production of lactic acid leads to muscle cramps, fatigue and weakness and muscles breakdown and release their glutamine in order to detoxify the lactic acid.

• If we can reduce lactic acid build up we can reduce the breakdown of the muscles ALA = more energy to exercise, protected muscles and fewer fat cells!

Antioxidant• Alpha Lipoic acid’s antioxidant action includes helping to protect the mitochondria

from damage• It helps regenerate CoQ10• Can ‘recycle’ or replenish some antioxidant vitamins after they have donated their

electrons and have become ‘spent’.

23

Focusing on the role of Rhodiola for energy–• Enhances mitochondrial function with resulting energy increases, reduced fatigue

and improved recovery time for those using that energy for exercise!• Fatigue and energy are also affected by mood; Rhodiola supports the functioning of

the Central Nervous System playing a role in alleviating stress and improving the quality of sleep but also in improving mental function, concentration and memory.

24

Synergy is the key to this product with energy production being supported by higher doses of the key nutrients, some wholefoods and an energy –rich botanical complex.

25

Building specific programmes with MultiPlus Energy

• Solgar’s Thermogenic complex contains green coffee extract and green tea, an ideal combination with the Multiplus Energy for someone looking for energy to exercise, an increase in lean muscle mass and an improved muscle to fat ratio

• Gold Specifics Energy Modulators provide additional CoQ10 and Alpha lipoic acid plus creatine (which recycles ATP more quickly) and 3 types of adaptogenic and stamina supporting ginsengs; Korean, Siberian and American.

• CoQ10 and Alpha lipoic acid are available individually or as the highly absorbable NutriNanoQ10 combined with ALA.

• One of the potential issues with ATP production is deficiency of D-Ribose, the backbone of the ATP molecule. . . . Supplementing with D-Ribose helps overworked cells to recover quickly and improves ATP production.

• Essential fats; key fuel source for the heart, vital for cell membrane fluidity & cell membranes communication. DHA in fish oils are structural fats which can also have a calming influence while maintaining mental agility. EPA will help circulation so helpful during stress too.

• Carnitine is used as a transport mechanism – it shuttles fats into the mitochondria . . . .the more efficient the transport mechanism, the greater the fuel source and potential for energy

• Balance Rhodiola complex would be a particularly nice addition if an individual is stressed, anxious and tired. . . .and can improve stamina . . .and help reduce stress. , allowing the body to relax and improve mood.

Looking at energy from a different angle:

• Impaired gut health can cause leaky gut = pressure on the immune system = often resulting in fatigue.

• Comfort Zone assists the complete digestion of foods and can improve their absorption and utilisation as nutrient and energy sources.

• Probiotics like Lp299v have been shown to strengthen the gut mucosa and its action as aselective permeable membrane.. . .as well as supporting appropriate immune response.

• Glutamine powder also helps reduce fatigue by strengthening the gut mucosa .which reduces ‘leaky gut’. Glutamine is also a brain fuel so it can help reduce mental fatigue.

• Iron is the pivotal mineral in red blood cells which carry oxygen . . . Iron is not included in the MultiPlus range so if supplementation is required you could use either of these bisglycinateiron formulas. The Hematinic Formula is a complex of blood building foods and nutrients whereas the Gentle Iron is only iron and is suitable for vegans.

• Chlorella helps improve iron absorption and promote new red blood cell.. . . So the cells should get a good supply of oxygen.

• Astragalus is a great herb for fatigue and stamina - It helps the body tolerate stress, reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.- Its antioxidant action helps protect mitochondria from damage. - It also supports immune function when it is overloaded with allergens which impacts on

energy levels too.

Probi Lp299v e-learning covers its actions and applications in gut health along with other digestive products
