DSSV Damping TechnologyDynamic Suspensions’ new DSSV damper can giveyou a competitive advantage due to a newdamping technology that has previously only beenavailable through exclusive arrangements.

DSSV provides significant performance andoperational gains over conventional dampers andeliminates the use of shims commonly used inmotorsports dampers.

DSSV Damping Technology offers:

• Analytically determinant. The DSSV damper is virtually a pure damper.Through the use of Spec Finder™, the damper will duplicate the behaviour ofa theoretical damper model enabling consistent results with ADAMS orother vehicle dynamics simulation software. This feature is the subject of apatent application.

• A wide range of damping curves. The nature of the DSSV valve providesthe widest possible range of F-V curve options - from digressive to linear toprogressive. Shim and poppet valve dampers are limited to combinations ofv2/3 and v2 relationships. With DSSV, the shape of the curve is only limitedby the laws of physics.

• Independent control of high and low speed damping. The low speeddamping adjustment is via a unique digital bleed valve. This feature is the subject of a patent application. The valve has predetermined discreet adjustment steps for consistent adjustment across the range, and between

dampers. High speed damping control is through the DSSV valve which runs in parallel with its own adjuster mechanism.

• Temperature stability. Oil flow within the DSSV damper is kept highlyturbulent which contributes to a very low level of damping “fade” at hightemperature. Typical force degradation from 30°C to 120°C is less than 4%over a typical range of velocities as compared to up to 16% for a shimdamper, or up to 14% for a poppet valve system (particularly at lowervelocities).

• Frequency independent. The DSSV valving design's low inertia and stictionhas produced a damper with consistent damping over the complete rangeof frequencies experienced by race car suspensions.

• Cavitation-proof. While most dampers rely on a minimum reservoircharge pressure to prevent damper oil cavitation below a threshold velocity(or at least a balance between piston and CV valving), DSSV dampers are

designed in such a way that cavitation is impossible regardless of velocity or valve specification. This feature is the subject of a patent application.

• Minimal sensitivity to displacement. The very low gas charge valuesrequired in DSSV dampers means that ride height changes are minimized as a function of temperature variation.

• Repeatability and consistencies. DSSV dampers are consistently repeatableto less than 2% or 15N damping force variation across the velocity range, and throughout the adjustment range. This consistency significantlyreduces the amount of time spent working with dampers to get the correctspec and range of adjustment.

• Minimal damping hysteresis. Much work has been done in thedevelopment of the DSSV product to minimize damper hysteresis, optimizing the trade off between damper size and hysteresis level.

DSSV is an aluminium-bodied coil-over damper covering a wide range ofinstalled lengths and damper strokes. It is configured for 2.00” and 2.25”(50mm and 57mm) springs with an option for 36mm (Formula 3) springs.

Adjustment via the replacement of the high speedcatridges can be made without having to fully strip, re-build and bleed the damper.

It is a pure 4-way damper featuring independent high and low speed valvesfor control of both bump and rebound, and includes linear indexed adjusters, matched from damper to damper to optimize the symmetry rating across each axle.

The desired damping specification is selected using Dynamic Suspensions’SpecFinder™ software. Fine-tuning is achieved through on-car adjustment ofboth the linear indexed high and low speed adjusters (adjustment range of 0 – 11 on each adjuster).

The external, cartridge-based configuration of the valves means they can bereplaced on the damper quickly and without the need to fully disassemble, re-build and bleed the damper.

The high speed valve adjusts, in even steps, the ‘blow-off’ point on the damper’sforce vs. velocity (F-V) curve.

The selection of available high speed valve assemblies provides a wide range of F-V curve options – from digressive to linear to progressive.

The DSSV range includes remote and in-line reservoir variants, with anoption for piggy back reservoir coil-over dampers and McPherson struts.

Multimatic’s well-equipped lab can conduct testsranging from base material properties testing tocomponent/system life durability testing.

Engineering servicesSpecFinder™Dynamic Suspensions' SpecFinder™ software is a fully predictivedamper model, based on the governing hydraulic equations.

It is not simply a database. It is effectively a software representationof the hardware used to construct the DSSV damper. By selecting theappropriate cartridges from the available valve library, you canvisualize the resultant F-V characteristics of the damper.

Drop-down menus allow you to select both the High Speed DSSVvalves for bump and rebound, as well as the actual on-car adjustersettings for all 4-off valves.

You can scan through the adjusters via the menus, or select the'sweep' facility.

This allows you to visualize the full range of on-car adjustments, enabling you to gauge the available range for adjustment from thecurrent setting. This is true for both the high and low speed valves, in both bump and rebound.

SpecFinder™ includes advanced graph-control features, allowing youto zoom into user-defined areas (specific velocity ranges), to look inmore detail at the F-V characteristics.

SpecFinder™ integrates not only with Dynamic SuspensionsDynosoft™ damper dyno software, but can also transfer data to andfrom MS Excel, using the 'Copy and Paste' feature.

SpecFinder™ features:

• Damping force prediction. Due to the analytically determinant nature ofthe dampers, SpecFinder™ accurately predicts the F-V characteristic acrossthe velocity and frequency range and at all adjuster settings.

• User-friendly. SpecFinder™ is well proven in a number of applications, it iseasy to determine what valve or adjustment changes are required to matchan existing damper curve.

• Integrated. It also interacts with Dynamic Suspension's Dynosoft™software to either download a reference damper curve or upload actualdamper results to match.

• Target damper F-V characteristics can be imported into SpecFinder™from MS Excel simply by using the “copy and paste” feature. The resultantF-V curve can then be easily exported back into Excel, or another suitableapplication, directly from SpecFinder™.

Multimatic’s advanced engineering services can be supplied either individually or as part of an integrated support program and may include: • Iterative package development in co-operation with your team’s chassis/suspension

design function. This can include advanced CAE, FEA services at component andvehicle level.

• Simulation support using ADAMS (suspension system and vehicle level), RaceSim or other vehicle dynamics simulation software including integration of SpecFinder™software.

• Testing support using our proprietary 4-post testing, acquisition and analysis methods.• Component testing utilizing our range of test facilities. • Damper technician and race engineering support at test and race events.

SpecFinder™ is effectively a software damper dyno, eliminating the needfor extensive dyno testing and effectively saving both time and trouble. It is as convenient as simply working at your laptop/computer.

Additional products and services can include:

• Simulation Support: Optimization and Sensitivity Studies. - Use of either quasi-static or dynamic scenarios.- Design of Experiments (DOE) and Multi-Objective optimizations to determineresponse surfaces: Evaluate sensitivities to race tunable settings and detailed analysisof specific event (e.g. corner or chicane).- Integrated suite of programs, industry standard and proprietary, brought togetherto provide an effective Track Side Tool for the race engineer.

• Multi-post rig testing. This is a cornerstone of Multimatic's vehicle dynamicsdevelopment philosophy. Since our rigs are specifically designed and built tocharacterize and optimize the cars dynamic response to road inputs, Multimatic iswell suited to maximize the setup of your car.

• Dynamic Suspensions damper dynos. Our range of both mechanical (sine wavetesting) and hydraulic (composite waveform and track data replay testing) damperdynamometers are key ingredients in the success achieved by many race teams, roadcar manufacturers and tier 1 suppliers in suspension development and optimization.

With multi-post test rigs in Europe and North America, Multimatic services bothOEMs and the motorsports community with state-of-the-art facilities, proprietarytechniques and software.
