See the sights of London by bus… It’s a fantastic way to see everything and it’s great fun too! Here are just some of the places you can see and visit.

The bus tour starts here at one of the most famous landmarks in London. 130 metres high, you need only 30 minutes to see the sights of London from the sky! Thousands of people visit the London Eye every week and they love it!

We all know about Big Ben! The magnificent clock tower stands high above London and it’s right next to

the Houses of Parliament, where Britain’s politicians regularly meet and make important decisions. Do you

know that Big Ben is the name of the bell and not the tower?

Finally, how about visiting the Queen? Yes, the final stop on our tour of London is Buckingham Palace, the home and office of Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family. When the Queen is at home, the royal flag flies on the top.

Or discover the sights around Britain… Discover the famous stone circle: Stonehenge. You can see these amazing stones up close and gaze at their size and curious beauty. Why not try a visit at sunrise?

Next on the tour is the Cathedral in the south of England. Millions of tourists visit Canterbury Cathedral each year. Walk around the 2,000-year-old church, meet the Archbishop and experience the tranquillity.

B After the second lesson, we have a 15-minute break and then we have another lesson. At 12.15 it’s lunchtime! I usually eat lunch in the canteen with my friends, but some people bring a packed lunch.

C School starts at 8.50 every day from Monday to Friday. First of all we have registration class. Our teacher takes the register to see if anyone is ill or absent. Then at 9.00, we go to our first lesson. I study lots of different subjects, about twelve, but my favourite subject is French.

D When I get home, I usually have a snack and then I do my homework. I always have lots of homework! At about 7.00 we have dinner. After dinner I sometimes watch TV or listen to music. On Thursday evening I meet my friends, Rick and Darren, and we go to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award meeting.

E We live on a farm in the country so there is a school bus that comes to collect us. It takes about 20 minutes. We usually arrive at school at 8.30. I’m 14 and I go to Secondary School.

F In the afternoon, we have our last two lessons. School finishes at 3.30, but on Monday and Wednesday I stay at school until 5.00 because there are extra clubs. On Monday, I go to football practice and on Wednesday I go to French Club.

The Notting Hill Carnival takes place in the streets of London and it is a great tourist attraction. Its name comes from an area in West London. This event is celebrated every year on the last weekend of August and it lasts two days (Sunday and Monday). It attracts more than two million people from all over the world. For this reason it is the biggest street festival in Europe and the second biggest carnival in the world (after the carnival in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil).

This festivity is organised by the Trinidad and Tobago population and is an old tradition from the Caribbean islands. The carnival celebrations start on Sunday. Two different parades are organised. The first parade is for children, who wear beautiful costumes and dance. The adult parade is on Monday and is longer. There are

decorated floats and live music, such as reggae, calypso, soul, hip hop, salsa and soca – traditional music from Jamaica, Cuba, Trinidad and Puerto Rico. The parade is almost seven kilometres long and at the end there is a special prize for the best float.

Today it is a multicultural festivity where everybody has fun. People can dance, listen to music, look at wonderful costumes and floats and have delicious Caribbean food and drinks. Families of Caribbean origin prepare for this event weeks in advance. They create wonderful costumes and floats and practise playing the drums and other musical instruments.

1 Where do most people live in the UK?

2 How many people live in the Republic of Ireland?

3 How many official cities are there in Wales?

4 What does a town usually have?

5 What buildings can you see in a village?

The United Kingdom has a population of about 60 million people. Most people live in the big urban and suburban areas between London and Manchester. In fact, approximately 80% of people in England live in an urban environment and less than 7% live in rural villages. The Republic of Ireland has a population of about 4 million. Around 60% of the population live in urban areas. In the UK, a city is a large and important settlement with a charter (a legal document) from the monarch. When a town receives a ‘Royal Charter’, it becomes a city. Most cities in the UK have a cathedral. There are currently 66 official cities in the UK: 50 in England, 5 in Wales, 6 in Scotland and 5 in Northern Ireland. A town is traditionally a settlement with a ‘town charter’ from the monarch. A town is larger than a village but smaller than a city. There is usually a marketplace. A village is a place where there are at least 20 buildings. There must be at least one public building such as a church, a school or a post office. There are over 10,000 villages in Britain.

My name’s Ryan and I live in Birmingham. It is often considered to be the second most important city of the United Kingdom. It’s a very lively city and there’s always something happening! Sometimes the traffic and pollution can be

a problem. We’ve got two football teams: Aston Villa and Birmingham City. They’re two of the oldest teams in the UK!

Cities, towns and villages

Hi, my name’s Jessie and I live in Stratford-upon-Avon. It’s a small quiet market town in England but a lot of tourists visit it because it’s the birthplace of William Shakespeare. I like living here – there’s always something to do. On Saturdays, I usually look around the market with my friends. There’s very little traffic so it’s a really relaxing and healthy place to live.

Greenwich Village, often referred to by locals as simply ‘the Village’, is a largely residential neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan in the city of New York City.A large majority of the district is home to upper middle class families. Greenwich Village, however, was known in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries as an artists’ haven, the bohemian capital, and the East Coast birthplace of both the Beat and 60s counterculture movements.

Groundhog Day 1

2 3

1 Sai che animale indica la parola inglese “groundhog”? Scegli con un tick (✓) l’immagine corretta.

2 Leggi il testo e controlla la tua risposta.

The groundhog (Marmota monax) is a kind of ground squirrel that lives in North America. It has got very thick fur because it lives in such cold regions and it is excellent at swimming, climbing and digging. The groundhog hibernates during the winter months and wakes up in spring. People in the USA and Canada celebrate Groundhog Day on 2nd February. They believe that if the day is cloudy, the groundhog stops hibernating to leave its burrow and this means that winter is almost over. However, if it is a sunny day, the groundhog sees its shadow and returns to its burrow and this means that there are six more weeks of winter to come. It may be just a superstition, but sunny winter days are often very cold because there are no clouds in the sky to keep the earth warm.In the past, February was an important month because it came between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. There was a Celtic festival, Imbolc, which celebrated the birth of animals and the first planting of new crops; and the Christian festival of Candlemas which celebrated the purification of the Virgin Mary. German immigrants to Pennsylvania probably brought this tradition to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nowadays people get up very early to watch the groundhog coming out of its burrow and they celebrate the day with food, speeches and entertainment. Groundhog Day became famous because of the 1993 film starring Bill Murray.

Remembrance Day is also called Poppy Day, Armistice Day or Veteran’s Day and takes place every year on 11th November. It commemorates the sacrifices of men and women during times of war. Why 11th November? Well, this remembers the end of World War I, which ended ‘at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month’ in 1918. In most parts of the United States and Canada, Remembrance Day is a public holiday. In Canada, an official ceremony takes place at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. There are many traditions associated with Remembrance Day including the laying of poppy wreaths, military parades, two minutes of silence and a gun salute. The poppy is the emblem of Remembrance Day across much of the world. Poppies flowered in many of the worst battlefields during World War I and the famous poem ‘Flanders Fields’, by the Canadian doctor John McCrae, referred to them too. To commemorate soldiers who died in the many wars, people wear poppies in their left lapel and lay wreaths of artificial poppies.

The world of fast food

The expression ‘fast food’ refers to typical cheap food prepared and served quickly in bags, plastic wrapping or cartons, usually to be taken away. For this reason it is frequently eaten with fingers and cutlery is not used. The typical form of British fast food is the sandwich, apparently invented in 1762 by a nobleman, John Montagu who was the Earl of Sandwich. He put meat inside his bread because he did not want to stop working or gambling. Britain has adopted fast food from

other countries, too, for example pizza from Italy, kebab (grilled meat on a slice of bread with sauce and dressing) from Turkey and Lebanon and curry from India. The first hot dog was sold in 1867 and the first fast-food restaurant was opened in 1912, both in New York City. These fast-food restaurants became very successful in the 1920s and 30s. The most popular franchising fast-food restaurants in the UK are McDonald’s and Burger King, with respectively 31,000 and 11,100 restaurants. These American chains can be found in more than 100 countries all over the world. A survey that was carried out in 2008 has shown that the most fast-food restaurants per person in the world are in the UK, followed by Australia and the USA. The largest fast-food industry is in the USA, but in recent years different kinds of Asian food have also become popular in western countries, for example Chinese food. Sushi (Japanese fast food that includes rice with fresh raw fish) is very trendy, too.Fast food has often been criticised because of its portion sizes, great quantity of calories, high fat and low fibre content that cause obesity and diabetes. This has led to a new movement called ‘Slow Food’ that tries to defend and promote local cuisines and ingredients.

Everybody has heard of WWF and knows the panda symbol, but what exactly is WWF?The acronym WWF stands for World Wide Fund for Nature. It was created in Switzerland by Julian Huxley and Max Nicholson in 1961. Its complete name was World Wildlife Fund until 1986 (this is still the official name in the USA and Canada). It is a charity and the largest international non-governmental organisation whose mission is to stop the destruction of the environment. It is an independent organisation and today it is active in more than ninety countries in the world, with five million supporters. More than half of the funding comes from donations (almost half of which come from the USA, the UK and the Netherlands). It has about 1,300 conservation and environmental projects all over the world. In the beginning it mainly concentrated on the protection of endangered species. Now that more resources are available, its projects are focused on the conservation of the world’s biological ecosystems (forests,

freshwater ecosystems, oceans and coasts) and endangered species, the reduction of pollution and the elimination of the most toxic chemicals.

According to scientists there are 238 eco-regions that characterise the world’s most biologically exceptional habitats and this is what WWF is currently concentrating on. At the moment this organisation is working on the restoration of 36 species of animals and plants (including some kinds of whales, dolphins, tuna and elephants), the conservation of 35 eco-regions (for example the Amazon rainforest and the Arctic) and the reduction of people’s impact in six areas of the world (mainly concerning fishing, forestry and carbon emissions). Globally it is also focusing on biodiversity-loss and unsustainable use of natural resources.

To do all this, WWF works with other non-governmental organisations, banks, governments, local communities as well as with scientists, farmers and fishers and with

companies (to diminish their impact on the environment).

After leaving school I decided that I wanted to do some voluntary work in the holidays before going to university. I knew that I wanted to volunteer in the field of education, so I found a project which works with street children in Nepal, in the Himalayan Mountains of South Asia.

My time in Nepal was awesome! I think that it’s one of the most beautiful countries in the world and the people who live there are so friendly! The project staff were brilliant too, if you had any problems or issues you could talk about them at the team meetings, which were held weekly and they tried to help you out and make sure all the volunteers settled down and were happy. In the school I volunteered in, the staff gave us complete freedom to teach or play with the children and helped us look for new ways to work with the children who were afraid because of negative things in their past. It was also possible to have total integration with the children’s daily lives by joining in at mealtimes and other parts of their everyday routines with them.

The experience of leaving one’s country, moving to a totally new one and learning about different customs and traditions was wonderful! I think it made me grow up a lot and appreciate the essential things that I’ve got in my modern home, things which they just dream about here. Some of the little children who experienced conflict, poverty, racism or inequality were just too young to understand it or know how to deal with it and NGOs really help them. Volunteering also gave me the opportunity to travel and meet people in a new way. Volunteering forces you to be brave and to develop useful skills such as how to speak the Nepali language, learn how to work as part of a team, understand what to do in an emergency when you’re far away from hospitals or doctors, and how to help children with special needs.

Since I got home I can’t stop thinking about the street children of Nepal and I hope that I can go back there next summer and volunteer again.
