The refurbishment of level 2 of the Westmead Education and Conference Centre (WECC) is

now complete.

The upgrade started in early October as a joint initiative between the University of Sydney and the Western Sydney Local Health District, as part of the Westmead Redevelopment refurbishment program. Upgrades included a new exposed ceiling, new carpeting, lighting and painting.

The refurbishment follows the recently completed refurbishment of WECC level 1. Work is also underway to refurbish Westmead Hospital Library, in partnership with the University of Sydney.

The transformation of education, training and research facilities at Westmead responds to our growing multidisciplinary environment, and aligns with our vision of a being a global health precinct. If you have any questions, contact the redevelopment team on 1800 990 296 or email us at: [email protected]

Kids Research’s Clinical Research Centre takes shape

The Clinical Research Centre, currently under construction at Kids Research Institute (KRI) at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, is making real progress, with all demolition works now completed and walls and flooring being installed.

On track for a January 2018 completion date, the centre will provide a purpose-designed paediatric clinical trials and research facility—the first of its kind in NSW—and equal to facilities at leading paediatric hospitals internationally. It is anticipated that more than 1000 patients will visit the centre annually when it opens in early-2018. The trials conducted there will vary. Some may only involve a few children with extremely rare childhood diseases while others, like food allergy trials or trials for vaccine preventable diseases, may involve several hundred children. These trials provide our patients with a chance of improving their health and hopefully finding a cure for their condition.

The Clinical Research Centre is part of Stage 2 of the KRI project, which also includes the delivery of additional flexible work spaces for Kids Research staff.

Western Sydney Local Health District spends more than $1 million each year on waste. We need your help to

reduce our carbon footprint. Make yourself familiar with Westmead’s recycling processes, which will be

carried into the new hospital building.

Westmead Hospital general services manager Raynelle Howat said: “step number one to being a Westmead

waste warrior is being aware of what goes in what bin. Waste types can be confusing for staff, particularly with a

large range of plastics and clinical waste in wards. If you don’t know, please ask your manager or give me or my

team a call. A quick chat will mean you’ll know for next time and you can help colleagues, patients and visitors.”

“One easy way to help my team is to unfold all cardboard boxes and packaging before stacking it neatly in paper

and cardboard, or co-mingled recycling bins. The more waste we get in each bin helps the crushing, transporting

and recycling process. All of these things can help us bring our costs down and save time.

“We can’t reduce Westmead’s waste without the help of our staff, patients, carers, visitors, students and

researchers - everyone can make an impact.”

Raynelle said staff could contact Mitch Clancy

([email protected]) if they were

looking for pre-loved office equipment or furniture

rather than ordering new items or to find out disposal

or recycling options.

The general services team has been involved in the

Lean 6S methodology, which is transforming

storerooms across Westmead. Read more in Project

Update 121. Staff from Westmead Hospital and The

Children’s Hospital at Westmead have been on site

tours to Baxter Healthcare to learn about Lean 6S

before implementing it in their storerooms.

Westmead Hospital general services manager Raynelle Howat

demonstrates that cardboard boxes and packaging should be

unfolded and placed flat in recycling bins. This saves space in

bins, allowing more waste in each load, as well as saving time.

Not sure which bin or have any questions about

waste? Contact Raynelle Howat and her team on

(02) 8890 5600 or [email protected].

The below waste stream guide is posted next to most bins

throughout wards and non-clinical areas across Westmead

Hospital. If you can’t see this guide, please contact your

manager so they can arrange copies from Raynelle.

Will you be a Westmead waste warrior?
