FUNDAMENTALS GAME/ACTIVITY
NAME OF GAME Balance Tag
FOCUS Balance
OBJECTIVE(S): To develop childrens ability to move with control and balance.
Use the space below to illustrate your game/activity:
Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
All children move along lines of a court; fwds, bwds and sideways.
3/ 4 children act as’ taggers’ and aim to tag as many children as possible.
When tagged the children must step off the line and perform a static balance for 3 seconds before re-joining the game.
After a period of time change the ‘taggers’.

FOCUS: Agility
OBJECTIVE(S): To test agility and reaction linked to vision.

ORGANISATION (How is the game / activity organised?): One person leads going to each cone in random order. The follower has to watch closely and try to keep up.
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: 8 Cones / floor spots per pair.
HOW CAN THE GAME / ACTIVITY BE DIFERENTIATED? Smaller spaced squares laid out by cones / floor spots. Larger distance between the two – to challenge field of vision.
COACHING TIPS: FEET: wide feet at the change of direction.
ARMS: raised very slightly to aid balance.
BODY: Posture whilst moving should be head and eyes up.
BRAIN: Leader – switching movement, faking movement. Follower – watching closely.

OBJECTIVE (S): Bump partner off balance

In pairs, face partner with a ball Standing on one leg, use the ball to try to bump each other off balance (onto two feet) Change legs when necessary.
Equipment required: A ball each
How can the game/activity be differentiated? Could use lines on the floor. Try to bump partner over the line rather than standing on
one leg.
Coaching Tips:
Feet – Try to get in a balanced position on one leg
Arms – Use arms to counter balance the shift in centre of gravity
Body – Keep centre over middle of base of support Keep head up
Brain – Think about centre of gravity and base
Activity: CARD SHARKSOBJECTIVE: To develop fundamental movement skills, balance, co-ordination and agility. To collect as many points cards as possible

Activity 10 minsDifferentiation
Children must line up and wait in 4 lines for you. This is their “Home”. Demonstrate each activity station
You show the team captain the next card from the pack- if it is a spade, the team do the activity at the spade station- the number of times they do this depends on the number of the card- 4 spades, 4 times.
They then return “Home” for another card.
If they are shown a picture card/joker this they keep as a point (hurray). They are then shown another card and if this is a task off they go.
Call all teams home, and count up points cards.
Have teams complete A or B task at each station e.g A:walk across beam B:have to hop course.
HINTSThink about where you will stand if you use 4 corners of the hall, as children may cheat if you continually have your back to that station.Instead of extra jokers, mark cards to change them into points cards.Ensure mixed ability teams and team support ethos

Focus: Agility
Objective(s): To change direction efficiently and effectively @ speed, in response to an external stimulus.

Organisation (how is the game / activity organised?): Groups of approximately 5 Individual starts jogging forward from start line As they reach the spots the feeder drops the ball and calls a colour The jogger touches the correct spot and catches the ball before the second bounce. Jogger becomes feeder and so on.
Equipment required: Floor spots. Ball (various types)
How the game can be differentiated: Easier: Feeder waits until the jogger has touched the spot before dropping the ball.
Use a larger ball Harder: Feeder drops ball as they call the colour.
Use a smaller ball Move from line 1 to 2 and 3 and so on. Call 2 colours, 3 colours and so on (jogger must touch in the correct order)
Coaching Tips: FEET: wide base when touching the spot to aid good balance and change of direction ARMS: Hands forward after touching spot so ready to catch the ball BODY: Upright when touching the spot BRAIN: Concentrate on the sequence of the colours called

movement and the formation of complex movement patterns. Illustrate with group participation the introduction of movement patterns through the

NAME OF GAME : Juggling
FOCUS: co-ordination, sending and receiving
OBJECTIVE (S): To progressively build co-ordination with the hands and then introduce the legs moving in the opposite direction.
ILLUSTRATION:
Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
In Pairs, standing opposite each other (about 1m apart). Each person has a ball that they hold in their right hand. They throw the ball straight to their partner who catches it with their left hand. They transfer the ball from their left hand to their right and throw again. The balls move in a rectangle shape between the pair.
Equipment required: o Balls and or bean bags
How can the game/activity be differentiated? Throw one ball per pair. Use bean bags Roll the ball and sit on the floor. Increase the number of balls up to 4 between the pair. Once the ball is moving fluently
between the pair they then side step in one direction, keeping the ball going in the air. Once they reach the end of the space they side step the other way and change the direction of the ball, so throw left, catch right.
Have different coloured balls so one colour they throw and the other colour they bounce pass.
Introduce a ball at the feet that has to be passed. Introduce more complex foot patterns
Coaching Tips: Feet – Weight forwards over balls of feet. Side stepping, keep the steps short. Arms – Elbows slightly bent. How much force to use? Body – Use of knees for developing rhythm with throw Brain – Throw then think about the catch

FOCUS: Coordination (including Balance and Agility)
OBJECTIVE(S): To coordinate body in a jumping situation whilst using balance and agility to achieve quality of movement

ORGANISATION (How is the Game / Activity organised?): Two Teams (3 or 4 maximum per team). Start at opposite ends of the pond. Player 1 squat jumps into hoops or onto floor spots, placing a bean bag into each as they land. Player 2 squat jumps and removes the bean bags. Player 1 puts down all of the bean bags, reaches the other team and tags them. Player 2 the collects
the bean bags on the return journey and passes to player 3 etc.
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Hoops or floor spots. Bean bags
How can the game / activity be differentiated? Greater spacing of hoops Change the direction of the jumps Vary the pattern / number of hoops / floor spots.
COACHING TIPS: FEET: soft knees, ankles

NAME OF GAME: Pac Man
FOCUS: Dynamic Balance
OBJECTIVE(S): Encourage children to move through a variety of ways to encourage and develop balance with an introduction to basic coordination.
ILLUSTRATION:
Organisation (how is the game / activity organised): All children to walk on lines (to develop movement e.g. small steps / big strides etc.) Must stay on the lines. 4 or 5 children act as ghosts with bibs. They must try to catch the other children in a prescribed
manner or style of movement.
Equipment required: Bibs Floor lines
How can the game / activity be differentiated? Begin walking on lines and progress to fast moving walking, running, step patterns, points of
contact and so on.
Coaching Tips:
FEET: Opposite arm to leg forward
ARM: Swing forwards
BODY: Good posture. Head up
BRAIN: Peripheral vision. Decision making (which lines to follow and so on).

FOCUS: Coordination
OBJECTIVE (S): To develop timing and spatial awareness when throwing and catching.

The ‘bridge’ ball must go back and forth whilst person 2 throws the ‘tower’ ball up before it is caught again.
In pairs one throws across and the other up. The receiver of the ball must return it before their tower ball returns.

Three activities around the hall
Balance Beam – work in groups of three to test their abilities to balance on dominant/ less dominant leg. One balancing, one spotting and one timing them.Speed Bounce – In same groups of three, one counting, one bouncing and one timing them.Agility run – One runs, one times and one checks that they complete successfully.
The class will be split into three teams (called nations, England, USA and Australia). They will be representing their countries in the events. Will then split down into groups of three and number themselves 1,2,3.
They will be sent over to a station each and be told to wait in there waiting pens. Each group of three will be given a scorecard to write the country names and scores for each activity on.
Activity 10 minutes
Activity 1) 20 seconds balancing on each leg. They time they stay on for is the score they get i.e. 11 seconds equals 11 points.
Activity 2) 40 seconds to see how many bounces they can do over the hurdle. Points awarded for successful bounces done in the time permitted.
Activity 3) 40 seconds to see how many times they can make it around the agility course. Points awarded for each successful run.
Each activity will be demonstrated by a group of three before the whole class starts so that they can observe what’s happening.
At the end a 25 fair plays points will be awarded to the nation whose participants have shown the best Olympic attitude of “it’s the taking part that counts”

Differentiation1) They can balance on the floor is have real difficulty on the balance beam.
2) They can bounce either side of the line on the floor if unable to bounce over the hurdle
3) Can be done in two x 20 seconds if you want to work on speed or on endurance.
HINTS Make sure there are suitable lines for the differentiation to be able to take place, if not
make sure you included tape to tape out a line. Ensure they have used stopwatch before or use a central timing system instead. Ensure safety is maintained throughout the session, i.e. on balance beams.

OBJECTIVE (S): Familiarisation with a ball. Perfecting the correct technique for throwing / rolling balls. Hand eye coordination

Introduction to a ball – Familiarisation skills. All members of the group have a ball each and roll the ball around the body, under their leg, around waist, head, side to side etc.

FOCUS: Balance
OBJECTIVE (S): To encourage movement and stable balance
ILLUSTRATION:
Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
Participants start on their own base and must sneak up on the wolf who is facing away from them. They try to steal a cone from the wolf’s base.
When the wolf turns around, all have to balance on one leg. Anybody losing their balance goes back to their own base and starts again. If the participant succeeds in stealing a cone they have to get back to their own base by
moving backwards and balancing as normal when the wolf turns around
Equipment required: Floor spots Cones
How can the game/activity be differentiated?o Increase/decrease the number of cones to steal.o Increase / decrease the area that the cones start off ino Increase the number of wolves

OBJECTIVE (S): Explore the development of more complex movement patterns

Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
Game 1;Use the lines of a badminton court. Participants move along the lines having to face the same direction. Therefore moving sideways when going left to right and right to left and moving forwards and backwards along lines at right angles.Nominate one person to act as the “tagger”, when the participants are caught they come off the line and hold a static balance for 5 seconds and then join back into the game.
Game 2;As above, but participants move forwards and backwards along lines. This will bring in turning skills at line cross sections
Stop game at relevant points to discuss movement patterns. Feedback; questions and reiteration of key points (2 Minutes)
Equipment required: Cones; if you do not have court lines on the floor.
How can the game/activity be changed to make it easier/harder?
Use a bigger area to make things easier. Start without a “tagger” or time participants over a predetermined course.
To make game harder use more taggers or work in teams.

Nominated player spends 1 minute in middle tagging players. Once tagged stand with feet together and arms out (Scarecrow). Another player running under either his
Balance or her arms can free scarecrow. Scarecrows may have to stand on one leg to work on balance.

Nominated player/s in middle. Others aim to get as many passes in a row as possible. If ball is dropped or intercepted by player in middle score goes back to zero. If ball is dropped or intercepted player in middle scores a point. Game can be made harder by saying that when caught the ball is passed around the back before passing. Game can be changed for example player in middle is aiming to TAG player in possession of the ball. This speeds up reaction and passing times thus making it harder.

Set cones up in Slalom with start and finish. Players work in pairs, 1 Runner 1 chaser. Runner sets off first round slalom aiming to score a try at finish line with the ball. Chaser sets off just after with the aim of tagging runner before he/she scores.

FOCUS : Balance
OBJECTIVE (S): One Line of People with birthdays from January to December.
ILLUSTRATION:
Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
Individuals need to move around next to people so that the line is numerical by month
Equipment required: o Floor lineo Benches
How can the game/activity be changed to make it easier/harder? Start initially on the floor. Progress to using a line on the floor. Use benches to balance upon. Fix a position to be held for 5 seconds when the line is complete.
Coaching Tips:
Feet -Base of support – on the move and static should be wide
Arms – Use to Counter Balance, hold on to others.
Body – Use of balance and counterbalance.
Brain – Thinking ahead

NAME OF GAME: Bench Balance
FOCUS: Balance
OBJECTIVE (S): To demonstrate the principle that when a body part moves away from the centre, the centre of gravity shifts in that direction.
ILLUSTRATION:
Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
Simple balance activity with the bench in the up right position.o Transfer weight on to right / left leg onlyo Close eyes.
Turn the bench over to provide a smaller base to stand upon.o Alternate balance using either right or left leg only.o Close eyes
Increase the difficulty by throwing a ball.o Performer must touch or catch the ball and remain balanced.
Performer has to maintain balance whilst keeping control of one end of a rope (the other end being pulled gently by a partner).
Work in groups of 4. 2 to maintain stability of bench,1 as performer, 1 as partner.
Performer undertakes a series of balance skills (as above).
Equipment required: Bench, Balls, rope
How can the game/activity be differentiated? Increase / decrease the standing area. Reduce the size of the base (e.g. one leg). Close eyes. Incorporate additional activity (e.g. catching balls, rope pull).

Feet – Keep apart, wide base. Arms – Keep out to the side. Act as a counter balance / weight Body – Maintain a low body position. Avoid moving body forwards /
backwards Brain – Think what your arms , feet and body are doing.

OBJECTIVE (S):Activity to aid Inter-limb coordination.
ILLUSTRATION: Group 1 – example activity – skipping with high arm swing (opposite arm to leg) Group 2 – Sideways motion, one foot in front then one foot behind (Grapevine).Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
Follow the leader of the teachers / coach / another participant.
Equipment required: Coned off area, Floor spots, Floor lines
How can the game/activity be differentiated? Group 1 – Regression – spots on the floor. Mapping out the sequence and length
of stride.o Progression – Skipping and touching the inside and outside of the
raised foot. Group 2 – Regression – smaller steps / just in front or just behind.
o Progression – switch and face the other direction after so many steps.
Coaching Tips:
Feet – experiment with little steps and big steps, balls of the feet, rhythmical action.
Arms – swing arm to ear, opposite arm to leg, rhythmical movements.
Body – lean slightly in the direction of motion, but not stooped over.
Brain – think about the co-ordinated movement, but start with the feet.

NAME OF GAME: Tag
FOCUS: Dynamic Balance
OBJECTIVE (S): The ‘it’ person attempts to tag as many runners as s/he can. All participants must stay on the lines of the sports hall.
ILLUSTRATION:
Organisation (how is the game/activity organised?):
Using the lines of the hall, runners must attempt to avoid the designated tagger. If tagged, they are frozen until another runner comes by to unfreeze them.
The organiser can specify ‘speed walking’ as opposed to running to emphasise the participants need to stay on the lines.
Equipment required: Floor spots. Hoops
How can the game/activity be differentiated? Lay spots on the floor. Participants must hop on one foot from one spot to
another. Each spot is a safety zone where they can pause for 2-3 seconds Increase the number of taggers.
Coaching Tips:
Feet – firmly plant feet after each jump, ensuring heels contact floor.
Arms - Use arms to counter balanceUse them to aid jumping when appropriate
Body – little head movement.Give in knees.Keep Centre of Gravity above centre of base

OBJECTIVE (S): Development of change of speed, direction and body shape

Demonstrate – someone running to cone then turning and sprinting.o As a group, let them have a practice.o Experiment with –

Game – Person has to run from the centre to the cone then back to the centre in order. Touch all cones with hand. The game should be completed as quickly as possible. How can the group work together to save time.
