Principal’s Note

Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

We have received reports of isolated incidents of Whooping Cough in an around our community and a student at Junee Public School has also been tested. Whooping cough is an infection of the throat that can cause bouts of coughing, and sometimes breathing difficulties and vomiting. It usually starts with common cold like symptoms. We have included with our newsletter a letter from NSW Health that outlines what you should do if you suspect your child or anyone else in the family presents with Whooping Cough symptoms. Please take a few moments to read the letter and take appropriate action where necessary to avoid spreading infection. Vaccination is the most important way of reducing pertussis in our community.

Canteen news

Over the past couple of weeks the canteen has been

providing an option for staff to purchase a homemade

lunch made by Natasha Gill each Wednesday. This has

been a great initiative and way of working out what

recipes we could incorporate into out Healthy School

Canteen menu for our students. A massive thank you

to Natasha for her cooking. The staff have really

appreciated tasting the different dishes to try.

Riverina Environmental Education Centre

As part of our NAIDOC WEEK Celebrations, over two

days next week our students will be heading into

Wagga Wagga to the Riverina Environmental

Education Centre. Our students will be engaging in a

Traditional Culture program. Aunty Jocelyn, an

Aboriginal Elder, will accompany our students to help

them gain an insight into traditional Aboriginal

heritage. Students will have the opportunity to learn

about bush tucker, traditional medicines and tools,

utensils and weapons that have been crafted by

Aboriginal people. This is by no means the whole

program and we strongly encourage all students to

attend. If you have not yet handed in your permission

note and money we strongly suggest you do as there

is a cut off for the excursion of MONDAY 24th June. No

late notes or money will be accepted for this excursion

after this date and your child/ren will remain at school.

Synthetic Courts

Over the past week work has begun on our new courts.

We have been informed that they will commence

laying the grass this week, subject to weather

conditions. Our students can’t wait to try them out and

I’m sure you also share in the excitement of our new

playground instalment. I am currently investigating the

purchase of new cold water filtration systems to be

installed. This will replace our old bubblers and reduce

water wastage. Stay tuned for more exciting

announcements to come in relation to our phase two

school upgrade.

Working process of our new Synthetic Courts

Enjoy the remainder of your week!

P & C News

A reminder that our canteen is open each day for

afternoon recess and lunch orders on Monday,

Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure you clearly

mark your child’s name and class on their order. We

are always welcoming new canteen volunteers so

please contact Rachel if you are able to volunteer for

an hour or more.

This fortnight out PBL focus is Wear Uniform. It is part

of our core value; Be Responsible. Students are

reminded to wear their full school uniform each day.

Wearing a uniform not only displays responsibility it

also encourages and supports a sense of belonging to

our school community

News from the Classroom

Wow! Where has the time gone? We have almost

reached the halfway point of the year!

The Muliyan classroom has been an exceptionally busy

place to be this term. During Literacy we have been

continuing to build our learning attitudes and

strategies with a big focus on fluency, expressiveness

and meaning in reading and structure, grammar,

spelling and persuasive techniques. We have created

extensive summaries about a pair of pesky chickens

who escaped from a primary school and Mrs Delaney

will be receiving some letters shortly regarding the

positives and negatives of indoor and outdoor play.

We have almost finished our Nanberry novel study and

will be moving onto Jackie French's 'Hitler's Daughter'

before we see the theatrical version at the Civic Theatre

later this year.

During mathematics we have had a major focus on

Measurement, Geography and Data and Chance this

term. Students have been hard at work calculating,

converting and creating across all areas. In recent times

we have enjoyed integrating aspects of our

components of fitness unit during health into maths.

We have used our mathematical knowledge to

calculate problems involving heart rates, strength,

speed over fixed distances and length just to name a

few.

During History we are starting to move from our focus

on the early colonisation of Australia onto the more

exciting gold rush era. Everyone is keen to investigate

why people came to Australia to strike it rich and the

different techniques they used to find gold.

In addition to our components of fitness exploration in

Health, we have also been playing a number of

modified tag and invasion games for sport. These have

included league tag, European handball and American

Football.

Finally, we have begun to practice the art of

mindfulness of an afternoon. This has been helpful in

creating a positive and productive learning

environment after recess playtime. We have been using

the 'Smiling Minds' app and practicing breathing,

calming techniques and gratitude.

Upcoming events for Muliyan include a short film

workshop, JHS production and NAIDOC activities at the

Riverina Environmental Education Centre.

The Sports Report (by Mr Cox)

Congratulations to Harrison Fanning who recently

competed at the Riverina Cross Country carnival in

Gundagai. Harrison came 3rd in his age group which

means her was successful in gaining a position in the

Riverina team that will be competing in Sydney later

this year. We wish Harrison the best of luck!

Permission notes for the district athletics carnival will

be going out later this week. Students who finished

first or second overall in an event at our school carnival

will qualify. The Carnival will be taking place on Friday

Week 3 of next Term at Nixon Park in Temora.

Reminder

Our Stage 2 excursion to Borambola Sport and

Recreation Centre is only two terms away and we will

soon need to finalise our student numbers for

accommodation.

There are still a number of students who have not yet

indicated if they will be participating in the excursion.

Could parents please inform the school if your child is

or is not attending the excursion, to assist with the

organisation of accommodation and meals?

The cost of the excursion can be paid in instalments. If

you are having difficulties or there is an issue that you

would like to discuss, please contact myself or the

ladies in the office so that all efforts can be made to

ensure your child can attend.

To avoid your child missing out, please contact the

school as soon as possible.

It will be a wonderful opportunity for students to learn

new skills and take on new challenges and experiences

and it is always a lot of fun!

Stage 2 excursion coordinator.

Pertussis (whooping cough)

Albury Public Health Unit is investigating a confirmed case of pertussis (whopping cough) in a person

who attends Junee Public School. I am writing to provide advice and to ask that you watch out for the

symptoms of pertussis, especially over the next few weeks.

What is pertussis?

Pertussis is an infection of the throat that can cause bouts of coughing, and sometimes breathing

difficulties and vomiting. It can be a very serious infection in small children. The illness can last for many

weeks. It usually starts with a sniffle or a cold.

What should people sick with pertussis do?

If your child has symptoms, or develops symptoms take this letter and see your local doctor as soon as

possible. Your doctor can advise whether pertussis is likely and arrange for early treatment if needed.

Treating people who have pertussis with antibiotics can stop the infection spreading, but is more effective

if started early.

To help prevent this infection spreading, people who have been diagnosed with pertussis should not

attend School, childcare or work until they have completed the first 5 days of a course of the

recommended antibiotics. If antibiotics cannot be taken, then they must stay away for 3 weeks after onset

of the cough.

How is it prevented?

Vaccination is the most important way of reducing pertussis in our community. It is important to check

that your child is fully up to date with his or her immunisations against pertussis. If you are unsure of your

child's immunisation status, please check with your doctor.

Immunity to whooping cough from immunisation or infection is not life-long. It is therefore

important to seek medical attention if your child develops a cough, even if fully immunised.

Need more information?

For more information, please see the attached Pertussis Fact sheet, or call the Infectious Disease

Surveillance Officer at the Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055.
