MulanAlisha Ripoll
A Brief Summary:A war breaks out and Mulan’s sick and old father is drafted into the Chinese Military. The military needs one male from each family but Mulan is a female making her technically unqualified to serve. She doesn’t want her father to go so she impersonates a man and joins the Military. Of course because this is Disney she falls in love during the course of the Movie. Typical.
Yin vs. Yang Leadership
Yin Mulan – Focused
on the good of the Chinese
Yang Li Shang – wants
the power of being the leader of the Military men
Shan-yu – wants to control the Chinese (also power)
Li Shang Has followers – The whole Chinese
Military The men of the Military do everything he
tells them to – explanation or not. The leader of the Chinese Military Transformational leader – Helps men get
in better shape and shake their fears of the Huns.
Li Shang – Not a “good” leader He didn’t ask to be a leader – his father
expected him to be a leader. “These boys are no more fit to be
soldiers than you are to be Captain” – Chi Fu.
Wasn’t and isn’t prepared to be a leader. Doing it for the wrong reasons.
Shan-yu Good leader leading to a bad
place/outcome He wants to take over the Chinese
Emperor and get rid of the Chinese Military.
Mulan “Hero” – Takes her dads place in the
Military because hes old and had a bad leg.
Kind of scatter brained and has no experience but goes for it anyway – Good leadership trait?
“uphold the family's honor”
Mulan - Transformation She cuts off all of her hair and dresses
like a man to be apart of the Military “I’ll make a man out of you” This is the beginning of her leadership
“transformation”
Mulan – The Followers Mushu – Dragon who follows Mulan
around. Cri-Kee – Also follows her and what she
says At the end – some of the Military men
follow her plan to save the emperor.
Mulan – The First Battle She takes control of the first battle
between the Chinese and Shan-yu’s men
Defeats them and saves her fellow Military men's lives when Shang just wanted them to run away
Mulan – Resilience “I don’t know if I can do this” – Doubt
Over came that doubt because she felt she had to honor her family and people needed her help.
Mushu – A small leader Motivates Mulan when she is down after
she was discovered as a female and told to go home.
He was supposed to bring her home but helps her keep going to overcome her fears and do what she set out to do (save the Emperor)
Mulan – Good leader leading to a good place? She wants to do what's best for her
family and doesn’t want her father to fight – she stepped up.
She over came some adversities and showed more leadership than the actual Chinese military leader.
Just wants to protect the Emperor and Chinese people.
Mulan – Transformational Leadership (literally) Gets 3 of the Military men to
“transform” into women so they can manipulate the guards and get to the kidnapped Emperor.
She also changed the Emperors and Li Shangs opinions on women in a leadership role.
Mulan – The kingdom Once again she took control when the
Emperor was kidnapped “You stole your fathers armor, ran away
from home, impersonated a soldier, dishonored the Chinese Army, destroyed my palace… AND.. Saved us all.”
Mulan in a leadership context – summary Mulan is a good leader leading to a good
place. She overcame her fears and
transformed some men of the army (literally)
She transformed throughout the movie – went from a mess to a strong leader.
