    1.1 INTRODUCTION

The Urban Design thesis provides students with an opportunity to undertake

independent research in urban design, also enabling graduates to apply principles of

urban design at an advanced level; generate proposals and solutions to complex urban

design issues in a variety of urban settings; and demonstrate an ability to critique urbandesign propositions.

This thesis is a self-directed exploration of an urban design topic of the students' choice,

which may be submitted for examination in the form of a Research Thesis Alone OR a

Written Dissertation, Plus a Design Proposal. Both types of products are presented to

an external jury for final review where students are expected to position their work in the

context of contemporary urban design theory and to defend their research conclusions

and/or design propositions with context to application of the contemporary urban design

    theory.

The students will work on and complete the written master thesis independently. In theprocess, they will develop their own position and viewpoint with regard the concept-,planning-, or design-oriented theme that they have drawn from their research andpractical experience. The students will choose the theme themselves develop aresearch proposal on it (the enquiry might be carried out by design or by researchmethods) and eventually concluding in a design or a written thesis and it shouldcorrespond to the advanced level of knowledge gained in the subject area UrbanDesign.

It may be research or application-oriented. The scope of work should include showing

how a solution can be reached. The masters thesis should be based on a theme thatgenerates integrated planning-based, strategic-conceptional and/or design-basedconstructional-spatial results.

The thesis presentation given by the students should place the theme of the masterthesis in a scientific, design-based context.

Teaching and learning forms: self-directed and independent academic work with thesupport of the examiners; intermediate reviews, panel reviews under the supervision ofthe allotted guide.

    1.1 OBJECTIVE

SPA Bhopal has developed this manual to aid the students in producing the thesis work

in a form that is comparable to the best and comes out to be a scholarly publication of

the Institute. The purpose of these guidelines is to assist in the preparation of thesis that

consistently maintains high standards for their contents, quality of research and

    presentation.

A thesis is a permanent record of the scholarly work performed by a student as a

requirement for an academic degree awarded by SPA Bhopal. Its contents, presentation

and quality of workmanship are a reflection on the student as well as the Institute. It is

therefore, incumbent on the Institute also to ensure that the material for public display in

the library is of the highest standard. This manual will be the most useful in producing

good quality thesis work. Moreover, there are a number of technical aspects to be

considered, while working on a thesis to make it a useful reference point for the

    posterity.

    1.2DURATION

Thesis is a part of curriculum of Masters programme in Urban Design and is carried out

in the last semester of the course, as a part of the academic requirement for being

eligible for the Masters degree. The student shall be required to work under the

guidance of a supervisor allotted by the Department and complete the requisite work in

the course of the Semester, followed by a viva-voce exam by a panel of examiners. The

students work shall be reviewed regularly by an expert panel throughout the Semester

to assess their progress and guide them from time to time. The student shall be

required to substantiate the thesis through drawings, reports, study sheets, models,

digital and verbal presentations, wherever necessary depending on the topic, in all the

    reviews and final viva-voce.

    1.3EXPECTED OUTCOME

The thesis project shall be undertaken independently by each student on a topic of

his/her choice, approved by the thesis committee. The student is expected to go

through the process of literature review, data collection, documentation, analyses

synthesis, design program related to his/her specific topic and related area of work.

After the finalization of the structure plan, alternative proposals shall be required to be

worked out through an iterative process of prioritization and elimination. The final option

of the proposal selected by the jury panel shall then need to be worked out in detail

depending upon the objectives of the topic. The final outcome of the thesis shall be in a

hard bound report form of maximum of 20000 words both side printed on a good qualitypaper along with drawings presented in a panel in A0 Size sheets to suitable scale. For

the report, all maps shall be condensed to A3 size and be placed appropriately by

folding to A4 size. The softcopy of the thesis in a pdf format shall be submitted by

inserting in a flapped pocket fixed on the last page of the thesis report.

    2.0 SYLLABUS: THESIS

    MAUD 0401 THESIS BY DESIGN

The culmination of student work, the design thesis is an independent design on a topic

defined by the student, leading to the development of a clear design proposal to be

supervised by a faculty team and evaluated by an external jury. The tutorial will assist the students to strengthen the theoretical base of the thesis and

analyze relevant successful design demonstrations through case studies.

    OR

    MAUD 0401 THESIS BY RESEARCH

The thesis by research is an independent research on a topic defined by a student, to

be completed in the form of a comprehensive report under the supervision of an advisor

and evaluated by an external jury. The tutorial will assist the student in research

methodologies, conducting of surveys, identifying case studies etc. Types of research:

descriptive vs Analytical, applied vs fundamental, quantitative vs qualitative, conceptual

vs empirical research Introduction to urban research, Research design methodology,

Descriptive research, Explanatory research, diagnostic, experimental research.

To develop independent critical thinking and design/research abilities and apply the

knowledge gained, skills developed and professionalism inculcated over the last three

semesters in an exercise of own interest and significant complexity.

The thesis project is to be undertaken independently by each student on a topic of

his/her choice, selected and approved by the faculty during the previous semester as

part of course requirements of the Pre Thesis Seminar.

As part of the studio requirements, the student is expected to go through a process of

documentation, analyses and synthesis related to his/her specific topic and related areaof work.

Initial stages would include study of relevant case studies and l iterature relevant to the

topic, on the basis of which the structure plan and design program would be

    determined.

Final stages of work would include detailed design of one portion of the structure plan

selected. Detailing would be largely dependent on the thrust and focus of the project

selected and would vary from student to student.

The student is required to work under the guidance of a supervisor approved by the

department and allotted by the thesis committee after the submission of the guide

consent forms by the students and complete the requisite work in the course of the

semester, ending in a viva-voce exam by a panel of examiners both external and

    internal.

Progressive evaluation would be done by a panel of external and/or internal jurors

during reviews held at intervals during the course of the semester.

The student is required to defend his thesis through drawings, reports, study sheets,

models and verbal communications in all the reviews and the final viva-voce.

For students doing thesis by research, in depth understanding of the topic should be

shown through using appropriate research methodology to carry out the research

forming a robust research design with supportive precedents to support the cases in

research. The surveys and case studies carried out for the research project should be

on the basis of a comprehensive literature review identifying appropriate gaps in them

    liable for research.
